Extreme Veteran 333![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAININGDougRob - 2012-01-06 11:19 AM For anyone that wants a cool experience I highly recommend doing the Pan Mass Challange. It is in the first weekend in August. The longest route is 192 miles over 2 days. The $ you have to raise is significant, BUT at least 97% of the funds get to the Jimmy Fund. I think they raised $37,000,000 in 2011. I rode a pre-ride one year from the NY/MA border to Sturbridge through the Berkshires.
Let me second this. The Pan Mass Challenge is an incredible event. There are a multitude of routes, including a 2 day ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown (on Cape Cod), 2 day ride from Wellesley to Provicetown, a 2 day ride from Wellesley to Wellesley (overnighting in Bourne at the Mass Maritime Academy at the end of the Cape Cod Canal with the other 2 day rides), etc. For the two day rides, each day is just shy of 100 miles. The aid stations are located about every 20 miles or so, and are extremely well supported with food, bicycle technicians, music and cheering sections. And the communities along the way could not be more enthusiastic. The route is packed with folks ringing cowbells and clapping. I did it last year with some close family friends and loved every minute of it.
Oh, and 100% of the money goes to the Jimmy Fund. 100%. www.pmc.org Although I have yet to discuss it with the family yet, I am seriously considering doing it again this year. |

Regular 641![]() ![]() ![]() Chicago | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAININGI just found out that I qualified for the Age Group National Championships in Vt. I'm pretty excited, but the race had never even entered into my mind. How high would you rank this on your bucket list of races? Is this a once-in-a-lifetime thing or will there be other chances? Thanks! ETA: I think my concern is that I don't think I belong at that event. I qualifed bc I finished first in two sprint events last year in my AG, but there was less than 20 people in one of those and less than 10 at the other. And the championships are an Oly distance, which I'm MOP. I've really improved this winter in my swim and bike times (swim was TERRIBLE, now is OK), but I'm sure if I competed I would at the back of the BOP. So my question is, should I register bc I probably would never otherwise qualify and who cares if I finish last, or should I continue to improve and hope to qualify again - but this time from an Oly event? If the answer to these questions are yes, then go for it! Who cares where you end up. Train harder and you might suprise yourself. Thank you! I am going to copy your explanation into my log so I can refer to it in Oct. As far as the trig part - that's another big no!!! But my BF is a Princeton grad w/ a math degree. She loves all that kind of crap! So I'll get her on that. :-) Plus she raced B2B 2 years ago so she knows the swim. My last HIM swim was so horrible, I almost cried coming out of the water and wanted to quit. I could really use a good swim even if everyone has the same advantage. |

2nd place is a set of steak knifes! Sticks and stones and all... Thanks, Steve, for the Cougar run today, for putting up with (and -- gasp! -- even praising!) my dog, and for sharing a special run with me. Today marked the end of my 100-Day Run Challenge, and Cougar was the place to finish it. This was my own little personal challenge to run 100 days in a row, a minimum of :30. If I got sick or injured I wasn't going to try to be heroic or anything, but fortunately that never happened (one slight cold but it never became bad). Most days felt pretty good, and there really were only 2-3 days where it was a PITA to find the time to run. Not bad seeing as this streak covered Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and a family vacation! Props to the hubs who encouraged me and helped me find a way on those tricky days!! Several people have asked me how I feel about it, how my running feels. I will say that I feel back to my "old self," in terms of most runs. My easy pace seems a bit faster than pre-injury, even though I've done no speed work. I'll be adding some structure to workouts in the future, including adding in the bike and swim, but trying to keep up the run consistency. My body likes running more days/week, even if they are shorter some days. |
