I'm already gearing up for a bigger, better batch over the weekend, or maybe a weeknight if I have time. I'm a little disappointed with how the first batch turned out, but considering I'd never done it before and was in a bit of a hurry, it turned out OK. I'm really looking forward to taking the time to get the next batch perfected. Gonna make it like I typically dress up store-bought sauce: nice big chunks of veggies and spicy, too. I also found this awesome recipe for balsamic dressing from scratch and I have some tomatoes, basil and mozzarella that are calling my name, begging me to make the dressing. *droooool* Yes, there are two different specialty oil/vinegar shops within 25 minutes of me and they are DANGEROUS to go into, and next to impossible to leave with empty hands! The one has a mango white balsamic that makes me drool and a green chile olive oil that does the same, and countless other awesome flavors, too, but those are my favs! |

Member 2689 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014 v.2 thread2 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes?) I'm trying to figure out a good run pace to shoot for in my race. I'm currently able to easily run 9:50-10 mpm for 4.5 mi., and 10:15 mpm for over 6 mi., both on pretty flat courses. I recently did a double brick, with relatively fast (for me ) 25 min. rides on the trainer, followed by running for 18-20 min. I easily ran 10:21-10:24 mpm with energy left at the very end. What's a reasonable pace to expect after a 480 yd swim in a wetsuit (this'll be easy) and a 12.3 mi. ride on a rolling course (more of a challenge)? The run is on a mostly flat paved course. I'm thinking I'll start out at 10:30 mpm and pick it up if I feel good. Is that reasonable or should I start out slower? I'd really like to be able to run across the finish line and avoid throwing up if possible! |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014 v.2 thread2 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes?) Hmmm, it's just Thursday and I still haven't got my fill of Shark Week. Some of the newer episodes are showing signs of being more entertainment than science. No matter I still love me some great white. Never seen one in real life. Have seen hammerheads, bulls, nurse, and tigers. None though during an open water swim. Back in the day during undergrad school I would go down to the Gulf Coast and work as a beach lifeguard. Wasn't a day gone by that we didn't see a shark cruising just offshore. Most were three to four footers. It was thought at the time that one was safe if one didn't swim beyond the third sand bar. We have been proved wrong since. Now, you won't be catching me swimming in their territory at daybreak, sunset, or any where the water is murky. Saw more sharks when scuba diving. Whilst spearfishing one could bet one would see a shark or two.
Anyone for an open water swim? I miss living beside salt water..... Edited by MadMathemagician 2014-08-14 9:03 PM |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014 v.2 thread2 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes?) Happy Birthday Erin! Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Racers! Mary, most important thing to remember for your race, more important than pace, race time, or any other thing. HAVE FUN! In the middle of it, when you are worried about if you are doing okay, where you are going to finish, do you look like you know what you are doing.....just have fun! I went for a 4km (well, since I am in the good ol' US of A, 2.5miles) walk today with no issues. I am going to try a short run on Saturday and see how it goes. So hopefully will be off the DL then! Have a great weekend everyone! |

In the middle of it, when you are worried about if you are doing okay, where you are going to finish, do you look like you know what you are doing.....just have fun! I should clarify: the reason I'm asking is because I went for a run on Tuesday and basically imploded after 1.5 mi. I decided to push myself since it was only a 30 min run. I started out at ~9:30 mpm and and by the halfway point, I felt like I had an iron band around my chest at diaphragm level and was really nauseated. I've had that happen before when it's hot and/or I've gone out too fast; the only thing I can do is stop running. No more running for the day - that's it - I'm kaput. Sunday is supposed to have a high of 93*. My wave starts at 8, so I'll be on the run, where there's no shade whatsoever, around 9:15 or so. Knowing that I'm fairly susceptible to the heat and that the bike is going to be taxing, I want to set myself up to succeed, not blow up. Worst case scenario, I know that I can just walk, but I really really really want to be able to run across the finish line and would prefer not to vomit all over my friends and family just so I can do it. |

Yes, start slow and build if you can. I have learned that my body does not deal well with the heat. I can run as slow as I want, and I will still end up nauseated, so I end up walking. Start out slower than you think you have to, cause you can always increase. And if you have to walk, I'll bet that you'll still be able to run across the finish without vomiting . You are going to do so great, you will surprise yourself. |

Janyne, are you doing Blue Ridge Breakaway this weekend??? You're not on the list, but I thought I remembered something about it. Then again, I think you had road concerns, but I could be completely in the dark on that. |

So I listened to Coach and didn't run today Mostly because I was exhausted from yesterday and didn't get up in time So yesterday morning Coach had me scheduled for a 1.5 hour ride but said I could also swim if I could make time for it. So this text string led to a pretty tough speed set at the pool... (coach text.PNG) Attachments ---------------- coach text.PNG (76KB - 3 downloads) |
