Jason sent this to me last week. It was "helpful" for getting ready for my race.

Yep, this sounds just about perfect!

FYI - for my first IM there were TWO times that I got really emotional during the race... the first time was when I finished the swim thinking "oh my God, I'm actually DOING an Ironman!", and the second was heading out onto the last loop of the run, seeing my parents, and KNOWING that I was going to finish.  Dangit, I'm actually getting all emotional even just with that memory.

You are going to have THE.MOST.AWESOME day out there.

I really can't wait. I told my family that I am not racing this race. It's just a celebration of the last 2 years working towards this goal and for my weight-loss accomplishments from the previous years. I'm going to take my time and just have a blast. I really cannot wait to be out there. I'm even going to take the time to change clothes for the bike and run just to remind myself to slow down and enjoy

Enjoy every moment out there.  It's going to be a loooooong day, but one that you will always remember!  And the finish line is the most wonderful you will ever see in your life... or at least it was for me.

I did full changes at my first IM and did 1/2 changes (bikini bottom to bike shorts to running shorts) for my second... not only is it a way to make sure you slow down, but it's also WAY more comfortable (IMO) to have clean, dry clothes on for the start of each portion of the race.

This is great!  Even though I've never been through a taper, I've totally had days that felt like this.

Got some new toys recently.  I picked up a Mio Link optical heart rate monitor, because chest straps are not my friends at all.  I got a new pair of running shoes (no neon tho, but they're red and blue Mizunos, aka my Spiderman shoes)!  My Xterra Vector Pro full wetsuit just arrived today.  Looking forward to putting some piles on them all!

Sweet!! Just in time for your race this weekend too.  (I assume you'll be using them and putting miles on them, as opposed to not using them and putting piles on them.)

I'm having a difficult time getting the Mio Link to pair with my 310XT, so I might not use that this weekend.  I'll start breaking in the shoes soon.  The swim this weekend is a pool swim, but I'll get the suit out to masters sometime to start getting used to it.

The Mio Link is pairing with my phone, but not with my watch over Ant+.  I wish I could borrow someone's watch to see if the issue is with the watch or the Link.  My watch is pairing with my old chest strap.

Technology can be so frustrating.  How does an optical HRM work?  I've never heard of such a beast.

It uses light through the skin to analyze the blood flow.  DC Rainmaker is much better at explaining it.  But I'm trying to figure out the issue because I dislike chest straps.  The wrist or arm is much easier to deal with, imo.

Awwww man.

I was wondering about your recovery time - my friend who's going through breast cancer was told a 6 week recovery time just for the lumpectomy... not including the breast reduction surgery recovery time or whatever treatment she's going to have after that.

The down-time might be a bummer, but I think it's probably better to get it done

I thought it would be like my last surgery with a little out patient and like 2 days off of running. Damn

But yeah, you are right. And honestly if I am going to do it, I want to do it right and now is actually a really good time (in terms of running) because I don't have anything huge over the summer. If I behave myself I am sure I can run easy before the end of the 6 but I have to be perfect in that first week or so.

Apparently I have the option to have traveling nurses come to my house to pack my wound? Huh, I am such a rookie.

I'm going to execute this like a race "plan."

It sounds like it is going to be pretty painful though. I mean, it's been painful all this time I've been living with it so I am sure I can handle it. I guess I should stop reading horror stories on the internet though.

Based on your RR's (and other info) you have a high tolerance for pain, and I'm sure they'll give you dope. You got this. You're smart. You'll handle it appropriately and come out the other side better for it.

Love the race plan idea Salty. Maybe there are a heap of fun things that you can plan to do with J during that 6 weeks that you never normally get time to do...or books to read...or architecture to visit...or something to keep your mind occupied.

After watching a friend slowly die of secondary breast cancer over the last decade you are definitely doing the right thing getting this sorted now. And if heaven forbid there is a next time don't leave it so long!!!

Yeesh, Salty.  Sorry to hear about the long recovery.  Start making a list now of movies you've wanted to see.  You probably won't remember the ones you watch early on so you can even watch them again later.

And for crying out loud, step away from the internet horror stories!!  (((Hugs and healing thoughts)))

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
