I'm sure you're gonna smoke that course with all of the work you've been putting in. If I make it out there, I'll be sure to look for you. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'm well not so healed up yet. Oh well. Nutrition is pretty basic for me for IM... Bike 2 bottles of 1000 calorie Infinit. Run, 1 Gu per 25-30 minutes. Add in water as needed for hydration. I couldn't make it any simpler 8). Easy week here and then as much build as I can tollerate or hobble for the next 3 weeks. We see how it goes. At this point all I want is a finishers medal and 3 months off to rehab properly before rebuilding from nothing. |

Regular 105 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Travis - Also glad to hear you guys are okay. With just over 6 weeks to go, I hope everyone manages to stay injury free (or in T's case, at least heals up enough to race). I almost took a spill on the bike this weekend taking a corner too fast. Locked up the rear wheel but was able to save it and keep myself from flying into a creek. That reminded me be more cautious, particularly in this peak volume month. |

Veteran 237 WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Rode 1 loop of the course today and some hills getting there and back and came up with 2500' with my Garmin on this site and 4100' on Garmin Connect. Beats me. Pretty hilly though, a couple pretty good climbs then lots of rollers ugh. It's flat riding back into town. Gorgeous course though. And some guy out on Rimrock road has set up a very nice Ironman Pit Stop. Porta potty, gels and bars and water and some powder mix. Came in very handy! How nice is that. Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey there everyone. Hope the weekend treated you all well. I participated in the full-IM sim on Saturday, only did one loop of the run (~12 miles). I did the full swim and 116 on the bike. It wasn't really a race simulation, but more of a "do the distance" type of event. We took a lot of breaks and my T1 time was almost as long as my 1:14 swim. Including all of the stops on the bike, I was out on the course for over 13 hours. It was a good chance to train some nutrition and I think I have a better idea of what to expect in the late stages of an Ironman. |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey everyone- I hope everyone had a good training weekend. It's getting to be crunch time!! I had a decent weekend and got in some good volume. I rode 85 miles on Sat (longest ride so far) and tried to get as much climbing in as possible here in NC. Garmin showed 4,443 ft of climbing on my route which I'm pretty sure is wrong- my guess is that it was around 1,600 feet. Maybe 2,000 max if I'm lucky. I'm getting worried that I'm not getting in enough climbing for CDA. I plan to ride 100 this weekend, then have a recovery week, and then do a mtn. century ride the first weekend of June with 8,000 ft of climbing! Hopefully that will prepare me for the CDA bike. I've switched gears and started to really slow up my long runs (ran 15 yesterday) and I'm trying to incorporate walking for a min every mile to simulate walking through aid stations on race day. I need to get my body used to being out there longer/slower. I cannot believe how close the race is getting! I need to tie up some loose ends and arrange for wetsuit rentals, and then I don't have much else to do but train and pack for the trip in a few weeks! |

I'm in the process of finalizing my travel plans (yes, very late to the game) and looking to secure some accomodations. Anyone have an extra room for rent or a hotel reservation, and they are not going to be using? The race hotel actually has a room available, but it sounds like it is a conference room, plus they want $430 per night. before I book myself at the Holiday Inn express (which has rooms available btw) - thought I would toss it out there.
PM me if you need an additional renter or want to see about transferring a hotel reservations in case your CdA plans have changed.
Thanks. |

Thanks. Cedar Motel has at least one room, as I just cancelled for friends that can't make the trip with us. We'll still be there though.

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Yay I get to START my run/walk build for CDA this week..... HRM, possibly too little to late 8). Oh well. If I can actually jog the first 6 miles or so that will save me an hour, scary thought. Ok I know basically nothing about bikes. What is involved in changing from the faster gear set on the back to the hillier gear set (11 27 to 12 28 or whatever it is that those numbers mean). Is it simply changing out the cogs or are we talking a lot of other changes also? Please be kind, my closest bike shop is 150 miles each way and though I can change a tube now and clean a chain... that is about the extent of my technical skills. And for those that have the slightly hilliear gear set, does it help on the hills? I can make it up the hills now, but I can't help thinking that just a touch faster cadence in a larger gear (meaning easier to pedal) would help. Any thoughts welcome, thanks. Oh and how do you know when your chain needs to be replaced? I think it may be time, but wanted to know. Bah I need a local bike shop 8). Edited by Baowolf 2010-05-19 10:36 AM |

1 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Been lurking on the site for a while and thought I'd respond to Baowolf on gearing. My 2009 Felt B-16 that I've been riding for 4 months came with a standard 10 speed cassette- 12-25 with a 53/39 on the front. I'm considering a similar move - switching to a shimano 12-27 or 11-28 to enable me to stay in the saddle or basically give me a "bail out" gear. From what I've read on slowtwitch and a couple other places, this might involve upgrading to a slightly longer chain - but should not necessitate a derailleur change. I could mistaken though. For this course, and my average cycling abilities, I'm thinking the 11-28 cassette will do the trick for me, especially on the second loop when my legs are a wee bit tired. Long story short - might be worth a 150 mile drive to the closest LBS. Thanks for all who have been posting information on the race and courseas I'm sure a lot of registrants are following this thread. Looks like water temp should be "comfortable" come race day........ |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Baowolf - good to hear you're back on your feet again! By no means am I an expert on bikes, but I know the numbers refer to teeth count in the smallest and largest sprockets in the cassette. There's some good info here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html If this isn't what you're looking for, you're bound to find it somewhere on the site. FWIW, I run 11-23 (with a "standard" 53-39 up front) and was fine at Oceanside, which seems to have steeper climbs than CDA. I am not good at sitting and spinning up hills (perhaps due to my gearing?), so I stand on pretty much any climb. I just feel like I want to get em over with as soon as possible and the leverage from standing makes it feel easier to me. I'm also going to change out the chain on my TT bike a couple of weeks before the race. I'm not sure I know when it's time, but I don't think I want to find out. I'll just swap it out early to allow for some teething time. Apparently, the whole issue of chain maintenance has been a topic of debate throughout the years: http://sheldonbrown.com/chains.html Good luck! |
