Ahhh!  So you have been exploring TT!

I have to give you a bit of background to answer your question.  Since I put a link to my catch/pull article up here (I posted it here in the gray guys/girls forum as well as in answer to a question over in TT)

Hey Scott--I actually haven't been "exploring TT." Can you enlighten me and I'll check it out. I found the Johnnyo link on slowtwitch.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

He also put a post over in Triathlon Talk, the thread is entitled "The catch, high elbow made simple."

Good morning, everyone.

This week was a good training week. I also managed to keep my food choices and portions in check.

Numbers for this week:

weight -1.6lbs 16pts
no gain bonus 5 pts
Workout 424 min: 14 pts

total: 35 pts

Spring conditions are finally starting to appear and the roads are now clear enough for outdoor runs. By next week, most of the shaded run/bike trails should be free of snow as well. I've dusted off my bike and plan to take my first ride today.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Subject: Hello Everyone!!
I hope everyone's training is going well. I have a lot of catching up to do with the group. I have popped on every once in a while and was glad to see that everyone is making it through this challenging winter.

I am happy to report that after surgery and 7 weeks of Physical Therapy I am back at it (although very, very limited). I can say that I was back in the pool after only 2 weeks but just recently got the ok to start easing back into the running. Stationary biking is up to about 45 min without too much discomfort. I am being realistic about it and not trying to bring things along too fast. As you all know, patience is difficult for all of us participating in mult-sport but I know that I dont need to push too hard and end up with a bigger set back.

Anyway, glad to be back and hope I can contribute a little more to the group conversation.

HAPPY TRAINING !!

Dave

I have a good week of training.Weight = 2 lbs lost = 20 pointsNo weight gain = 5 points808 training minutes = 27 pointsTotal = 52 pointsI ran a trail race today. A friend and I decided to to it at the last minute. Two of her teenage daughters and my 22 year-old did it too. There was the option for 5 or 10 miles. All but one of us opted for the 5 miler (which turned out to be 6). Very tough last mile for me. I can't remember the last time I ran 5 miles. Still managed to get a nice 3rd place age group pint glass. I am stiff and sore from my group ride yesterday and from working on my T-shirt quilt. After the ride I worked pretty much non-stop on it. Who know that such work would leave me almost not able to get out of bed this morning! I hope to make some more progress later today.Hope everyone had a nice weekend.Welcome back Dave! I am the one in blue.

Well, I've enjoyed my time near the front of the pack (though well behind Zippy), but as is my style, endurance is a challenge. I'm now in the midst of a difficult stretch at work, and given the fact that it is snowing AGAIN, it has upped the challenge even more. Will do what I can and I accept that, but expect I will be sliding back in both training time and probably gain a pound or two as well over the next couple of weeks. Anyway, enough whining... here are the numbers for this week - better than I expected going into the week, so I'll take that!

No change in weight (despite much good TexMex in Dallas) = 0 + 5 pt. bonus = 5
Training = 330 min = 11 points
Total = 16 points

Doesn't look like I'll have any time for training again until Friday (maybe Thurs pm, fingers crosses). On other news... look HOOS a #1 seed in the NCAAs - ah, my beloved Cavaliers :-) So, I will enjoy that positive (and unlikely) turn of events and ride that into the new week.

Glad to hear your news Dave! Great job Melanie!!

Have a good week everyone!

Stu

Last week was a good news/bad news week.  Had three clients develop major issues, within a couple hours of each other.  That wasn't so unusual, except they were in Missouri, Indiana, and Texas.  That was a problem.  I discovered it is rather difficult to complete a workout at 35,000 feet.  Missed several workouts and time was WAY down.  The flip side was I generally don't eat much when I travel so I essentially went on the Survivor diet and lost some weight.

Weight loss - 2.4 pounds - 24 points

No Gain - 5 points

Workout 217 minutes - 7.2 points

Total - 36.2 points

Man, I know that feeling. The time zone changes just wiped me out....I pretty much lost three full days of training just to recover. Good for you....you did better than me!

I know I'm late posting this but I was home sick yesterday and didn't do much of anything.  Here's my numbers for the week:

up 2 lbs = -20 (boo!)
workouts 255 minutes = +8.5
total of -11.5

Can it just get added to next week (or subtracted I guess I should say)?

I am certainly feeling creaky this week.  Been very stiff every morning and getting moving and out of bed a struggle.  Had a monster training week last week and very active weekend.  It's Wednesday and I am still recovering from Sat/Sunday activities.  My middle back is especially tight...twinges all the time.  Been rolling a soft ball on it while I sit and try to do work.

Originally posted by JREDFLY Hi Scott - This mornig I felt like my stroke was going too deep when taking a breath. When I would breath to the left my right hand goes too deep and vice versa when breathing to my right. I told my coach this and he said I was probably taking too big of breaths and to shorten it a little and take less head turn keeping more of my face in the wateer. It appeared to work with the few laps I had left , my arms didn't feel as if they were working as hard (which I think is a good thing).. My cadence was going a little high so I tried to slow it down a little to make sure I was reaching and brushing my hip. .Any thoughts, do you think my coach was on the right track? BTW I like the new kick drill, I need all the help I can get.

Hmmm.  Without seeing you in the water, my first inclination is that you may be lifting your head a bit as you breath.  You can easily see what happens by getting into the "swimmer's position" and putting your arms and head into the position you would be in as you breath.  Now, raise your head and watch what happens to your forward hand - it drops several inches.

I would suggest a couple things.  First, make sure you are exhaling while you are swimming.  A good thing to remember is, "If you aren't inhaling, you are exhaling."  That way, when you breath, you are only breathing in, which makes it faster.  Second, you should only be turning your head, not raising your head and your head should essentially follow your shoulder rotation.   As you turn your head to breath, tuck your chin just a little bit.  Your forward momentum through the water creates a 'bow wave' in front of you.  That wave creates a trough, or stated another way, a low spot, that extends down both sides of your head.  By tucking your chin as you turn your head, you are breathing from that trough area.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you go 5-6 strokes without breathing (other than turning blue)?  Do you have the 'dropping your hand' feel?

When I do the 5 strokes on one breath I don't feel the drop.

I think the exhaling really helped this moring in the pool. THANKS!!!

It seems like when I concentrate on one thing I lose the other 5 things that I should be thinking about for a good stroke (Reach for the wall, point toes, good rotation, brush thigh with hand, exhale, relax neck, don't turn head too much, kick, don't reach too deep, etc.). I am sure the rest of my stroke sucked today but at least with concentrating on my breathing I didn't feel as spent. I am up to to eight consecutive lenghts (25 meters) without stopping with one minute rest between repeats and I am adding 2 lenghts per week. I just have to remember this takes time, it is not going to happen overnight. I just have to put more time in the pool and I have been hitting it pretty good three time per week so I am pretty happy about that and will keep it going. Thanks again Scott for the tip!!!

I hear you on this. and on my running form as well, I concentrate on one thing and lose all the other things I should be focusing on. Hence drills, I suppose.
