Since we're on this topic, do you know how sick I am of hearing "we need to be safe out there?".  I dont disagree with it, but where is the culpability for the f$cking drivers who purposely veer at us, text, email and talk endlessly on the phone.  I don't give a rats a$$ that the sun was in the kids face who hit and killed Jeff.  He deserves to be punished.  In the early summer, it is nearly impossible to see when driving on the Beltline due to the rising sun.  Guess what?  I put my hand up to shield the sun (the visor is too high) and slow down so I can make sure I don't hit the car in front of me.  It's  a f$cking lame excuse they didn't see someone.  I really believe only with action against these jerks will there be a time these rednecks and imbeciles stop and think.  I am really worked up over this death, Scott (Schmize's) accident, my near misses this summer....

fattyfatfat - 2010-10-05 12:35 PM hold it.

you switched a key word there.  a shoulder is not the same thing as a bicycle lane.  about 1 minute of google time shows this.....

in washington state pedestrians must use sidewalks if they are there.  here

a bicyclist can use either the shoulder or bike lane.  here

all that said,  this is worth repeating...."The fact of the matter is everytime we run or bike on the roads we endanger ourselves.  Pathetic."

Ooooh -- this is good, thanks John!! I will say that in my area, bike lanes are much wider than shoulders. Love that I am breaking the law on a daily basis. I have cops pass me ALL THE TIME when I am out running in my bike lane. Now if they stop me I promise I'll put  my tail between my legs and I won't argue!!! (But I still might flash 'em my pink spankies! Ha ha!)

kkcbelle - 2010-10-05 1:29 PM My hackles are up.

I was out doing a decently easy lovely 4-mile run today, late morning. On my way back, I was running in the bike lane on a not-very-busy street. I choose running on the road to the sidewalk when it's safe, because I prefer the camber, softer surface, and don't like the undulations of driveways. I'm very aware of car and bike traffic and always hop up on the sidewalk if there is a cyclist or a wide car coming my way.

So anyway, happily running along when I hear a hostile shout, "GET UP ON THE D*M#  SIDEWALK!!" I turn to see a camo-wearing truck-driving bitter old man totally getting PO'ed at me, yelling at me to get off the road. I am going against traffic. He is going in the same direction as I am (opposite side of the road), so I am not affecting him in the least!! WTF? Seriously???? He shot me dirty looks and shouts as he took a left turn in front of me (with tons of room --  I was not at the intersection yet). Of course after my adrenaline calmed down I came up with numerous choice come-backs, but I'm glad I took the high road and held my tongue. I was wearing a pink skirt with pink spankies, and maybe in hindsight I should have flashed him some pink cougar bootie.

And lest you think I'm judging him for wearing camo and driving a truck, I AM NOT. I happen to train my dog for hunt tests (it's one of my main non-tri, non-kid hobbies) and I, too, wear camo (and am learning how to handle a gun alongside my dog, etc.). I'm just judging him for being grumpy. And rude.

OK. PHEW. Got that off my chest. Sorry if I sound bitter. If I can't gripe about this stuff here, where can I?

If the road isn't a busy one, I always run on the shoulder...way better surface than concrete. I've had people veer at me to scare the crap out of me so in general, I'm a trail girl so it doesn't happen often.  I see this behavior way more in biking in Wisconsin.   Typically they're driving an F150 or dump truck.  I never react...that is exactly what they want.  My training partner would go ballistic all summer long and I think that just adds fuel to the fire.

With the recent hit of Dave's friend given his high profile within the bike community, I am hoping more buttheads see that if they hit someone they pay the conequences.  The fact of the matter is everytime we run or bike on the roads we endanger ourselves.  Pathetic.

That happened to me, grumpy old man in a big truck, early Sunday morning, nary a soul in sight, and I am running against traffic, huge two lane residential street, PLENTY of room, we're talking huge!!! and he veers towards me, honking his horn loud as can be, screaming at me to get on the sidewalk!  huh?  really?  how am I bothering you, again?  i am running faster than you can frickin drive, old man, that's what i said to myself, smiled and waved and kept on my merry way.  HA!  This happened last spring sometime, and can you tell, it still bugs me???  redneck in sf.  dawg.

Ha ha! I told Dave that I think what bothered me the most was that I let it get to me and ruin my good running mojo!

Hello everyone.  Yes, I survived my birthday -thanks for the wishes.  Nice photos John, both in and out of your pants.    And what are all these jokes about peeing on myself?!?!   I don't do that when I run  (well, I do a little bit but that is a birthing baby thing and all the mommas will back me up on this one Kiss)

I might could be talked into a bike relay.  Do the half and the olympic happen on the same day?  Gotta sort out with the man on what he's racing and if the kids are coming with us.   And don't worry about T2,  Sam will take care of that right?

Who's interested in telling us their race plans for the weekend?  ANYONE???

For those of us that are sitting on the sidelines, I bet you've been dreaming about some big goals in your future.  Might be for next year or even farther in the future. Care to share?

Me, me, me - I am so excited for a local 5k - the Great Pumpkin.  I have no real expectations except to run as hard as I can and see where I'm at.  I should be around 25min. give or take some time.  At least I hope so just as long as there are no big hills!  I could also be excited b/c it's fall and that is my favorite time of the year!

As far as big goals for next year - I won't lie or hide behind my secret wish goal.  It's Boston baby!!!!  I'm even doing a marathon in Jan. to practice for my attempt in March!  LOL  A few years ago I never thought I would have typed that sentence.

I plan to train hard during my tempo runs (a weakness), nail my nutrition and slim down to a lean, mean running machine.  And if it all falls into the crapper and I fail miserably, so what - won't be first or last time in my life.  But if you don't try, you can't succeed!!!!!

Happy Fall everyone.  :-)

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

I'm racing...a long one.  Fri pm - Sprint.  Sat am - Olympic.  Sat pm - Olypmic.  Sunday am - HIM.
No idea what to expect.  They call it epic and painful.
On top of the races I have strep or some bug.  We'll see what the doc says today.

I have my first Cyclocross race on Sunday.  LOL, still waiting on the brifters I bought on E-bay and the shoes I ordered from the local shop to arrive, then re-build my cross bike probably on Saturday to race on Sunday..  What was that about nothnig new on race day?

I expect 45 minutes of muddy painful bliss.  Followed by beer.  I'll take lots of pictures, lol I'll be so far off the back I could probably bring the camera on course for pictures.

For next year I have no idea, I want to do more bike races but get faster at the Oly & HIM distance, not sure if those 2 things are possible in the same year, but we'll see.
