And Yanti does not need any encouragement with her RR, she is letting the experience marinate. War and Peace wasn't written in a day.

It may not have been written in a day, but it couldn't have taken more than 10 months

If we're using that as a measure...I believe she has another 3-5 years to write and final edit. Which IM are you betting on?

Really, it shouldn't be a 1:1 ratio.  War and Peace covers about 8 years surrounding the era of the French invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. Comparing that time frame with how long it took Yanti to get ready for and race the IM should result in a RR finished within 10 months of completion.  This should be true even factoring in all the starts and stops to her training!

Just got back from a long weekend camping trip and fun at the lake. Who knew holding on to a raft behind a boat could make you so sore?? Geez! Can't wait to catch up on the weekend races. Have a great Monday everyone!

I've never used the Barry plan, so can offer no insight, but I'm happy to see you'll be able to get some training in now that the pups are gone!  I guess you're doing a run focus cuz you're getting those new shoes !

well partly because of the 2 new pairs of shoes (I figured seeing how they are basically half the price over there that means I could have 2 pairs in different colours)

But mostly because my running SUCKS and if I work on it I think I can fairly easily knock 10 minutes off my sprint time. No I'm not exaggerating it really does suck that badly.

Bizarrely enough (okay, well, not for me I guess), I am actually reading War & Peace right now. Not in a day either but am about a third way through. I didn't think I'd like it (I love much of great literature but a lot of the classics bore me to tears, frankly) ... but I think it's really suspenseful, funny, wistful, amazing characters and deep insights into and from them.

What made me decide to do it? Free copy of a good translation!

Hot damn. I sound like NyNy on Goodreads

One of the nicest humans on Earth (definitely on BT) Jennifer Hatcher sent me a crapton of latex swim caps from the U.S., both used and she threw in a bunch of new ones, like that one

Will this monsoon never end?   Three weeks and no change in forecast predicted.  Makes it kind of hard getting a long ride in.   Dodging thunderstorms and the odd tornado makes life interesting.   Just like that old Chinese curse,  "May you live in interesting times...."

Oo la.

We're having the same.  This past weekend, we had rain, hail, and tornadoes.  I have to adjust my workout nearly every day depending on the weather.  People doing Ride the Rockies had snow and 200 people had to be bussed off one of the passes because the descent was too dangerous.  'Tis that time of year when the weather can't decide what the heck it's doing!

You must not live where I thought you did!  Nickajack and Tims Ford are each reporting about 1.3 inches of rain this month.  Raccoon Mountain only 3/4 inch.  Not exactly a monsoon.

Here in the Raleigh area we have a typical summer weather pattern of scattered of isolated showers every day -- both last week and forecast for this week.

Hey everyone! Still alive, but still no internet at home...I'm currently using free wifi at the Barnes and Noble... Being mostly broke sucks. And on that note, I am going to apply for another position! North Carolina Zoo has an opening for their Reptile, Amphibian, Fish, and Invertebrate Curator....its kind of a long shot, but I do have the minimum qualifications. It pays double what I make now as a starting wage too. Though I would only have African and North American animals in the collection, it could be a great step up for me. Wish me luck!

As for races, I am not in for the Sacramento International Tri (money again!), but I still plan on the Davis MOOnlight 1/2 in July, and a 10 mile trail run later that month....It looks like my tri fun is not happening nearly as much this year. Oh well. At least I am being mostly active. I have been reading stuff, its just REALLY difficult to post with my phone! Hopefully I will return to interneting at home later this month!

Great races, all! I'm so proud of you guys! When I get a moment I would like to comment a little more in depth than that but life has been a bit ca-ray-Z.

I was considering a trail race tomorrow  just as introductory speedwork but our coach has a weeks worth of other intensity stuff to ease in and I had probably better listen to him (and save myself 30 bucks i guess.)

Ah well, there is still nothing too important in the next month or so. I do have Nationals (for the 10K on the track) in July, a  10K in the middle of August followed by a HM at the end and then...wait for it....A marathon in December!!! It's one I have wanted to do for a while but had to be delayed because I couldn't let my one and only Boston be '13. So, it seems like a perfect time. Oh, Kate, it's in your neck o' the woods. Cal Intl. So, of course I'd love for NC to work out but maybe I'll see ya down there.

The best way to keep up with my shenanigans is Instagram or twitter. I'm in the midst of making some creative goals and capturing more of these moments via photography and video is one of ways I am choosing to execute. I'm kind of like Kate with less and less time tethered to the computer and more and more on the phone so regular posts are a bit cumbersome.

Kate, good to hear from you and good luck with the new job prospect!  Glad you're getting some fun in, even if the races aren't tris.

Salty, you sound like you're bouncing back well from your surgery.  Yay!  Hope your recovery keeps going as well as it apparently has been!

To all the racers this weekend, looking forward to those RRs.  Um, Yanti, don't know when I'll ever see one of yours and I'm not taking sides in the wagering because I don't like beer.  Since you seem to be enjoying reading more than writing, though, I'm guessing that the next race is going to happen before the RR.

I picked up a Garmin Edge 500 off of Craigslist.  It's smaller than I thought it would be!  I need to get it set up on my bike along with the cadence sensor.  Looking forward to seeing all the data after that.

I haven't looked at the cadence sensor yet, but hopefully I can keep the magnets that are already on my bike for my Cateye.

So, Is there a best way to use the forumÉ Like if I have a new question do I just press reply on the last one or...

Also, how do I read your training logs...

I have two questions...the first one is about group rides. I found a place close enough to home that requires you be able to ride about 30km in 2hrs. It does not sound too strenuous and they said they would teach me the whole shifting gear things. Im concerned I will be in over my head. I have the fitness to go 2hrs but...

Also, what do you do when you literally dont have time for workouts. I have scheduled out my next 4 days, and after I have done everything I have about 20 min left in 24hrs, and thats only sleeping for 4 hours. At this stage is it a do what you can as often as you can or is there a trick to making it all work...

I am hoping a couple of plans get cancelled, but I cant count on it.

P.s. I usually have better grammar than this. My question mark is a É and my apostraphe is a è and I dont know how to fix it.

Hi, Emily.  To answer your questions:

1.  Yes, just hit "Reply" to the last post to start a new question.  If you want to quote any of the previous post (like above), hit "Quote".  You can always delete out some of the text if you don't want to quote the whole thing, and if you're responding to just one part of it, it helps to mark that part of the quote in bold.  I'm sure there are directions around here somewhere.  Maybe one of the more experienced Manatees can point you in the right direction (notice I didn't say "older"! )

2.  To see people's training logs, left click on their user name.  You'll get the option to see their training log, as well a profile, race log, and a couple other things.  You can also copy Chris's or Janyne's Manatee list from their training log and put it on your own training log "dashboard".  From there, you can just click on whoever's you want to see and you'll get sent right there.

3.  That group ride sounds like a good option, and one that's set up for relative beginners.  30km in 2 hours is a fairly easy pace, especially if the route is relatively flat.  If you have a bike computer, you can always check yourself to see if you really can go that far.  I'm guessing you'd be fine.  Check with the group organizer to confirm that it's a no-drop ride; my guess is that it is given how they'll work with you on learning to shift, etc.

4.  As for fitting in workouts, this is supposed to be fun.  Several other Manatees have struggled with this too (recently, Stacey and Darren).  It's pretty common among endurance athletes to bump up against this now and then.  If you have to choose between doing a workout and sleeping, I always opt for sleeping, but that's just me.  My rationale is that if I don't sleep, I don't have time to recover and I also don't the mental or physical strength to get through a workout.  Sounds like there's a lot on your plate right now so I'd say go for fitting in what you can and try to let it go at that.

And don't worry about your grammar.  The grammar police aren't too active in this forum.

I based my Barry P training on time, because I always ran too fast when based on distance (I was just coming back from injury when I started).  It worked great for me!

You're saying to NOT ask the old people anything. Got it.

The training logs are a bit cumbersome to look around at other people. I don't know how Judi does it. I look far less than I'd like.

The group ride does sound like a good idea. Sounds like it's a more supportive atmosphere to help get things going. A little more advanced ones can help to push each other for more solid workouts, but that's not the feeling I'm getting so far here. Also check to see if they ride that much every time. They may just say that so people don't want to turn around 2 miles in or something. Seems a rather relaxed pace for about anyone and they want people who want to go ride, not really speedsters, but people who want to be out there.

And for workouts, some people get creative at times. Go out for a run on lunch break. Bike to work, or part-way. Run part way. Sometimes it's unavoidable. See how much it happens as you go along so that you can be honest about your fitness to make better decisions about any upcoming things you may have.

And I clearly don't follow my own directions!  (I think I'm one of the "older" Manatees age-wise?)

The training logs are a bit cumbersome to look around at other people. I don't know how Judi does it. I look far less than I'd like.

I've found getting to people's training logs is really easy when I paste somebody else's Pod list on my dashboard.  Then I can just click back and forth.  Or if they have Pod list on their dashboard too, I can jump from theirs to the next person.  It's much easier than trying to from person here, to log back, back to here, to another log ,etc.  I don't think you have a Pod list on your dashboard but can't remember.

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
