...my Seven is getting shipped to TX today via FedEx Ground for a mere $150 round trip which includes $5000 replacement value insurance.  Not a bad deal....

Is that because it fit in a Medium Fedex box?

moxie - 2010-04-15 10:16 AM I am so pissed at my legs! Ok, so I got severe shin splints last year - bone scans and all. I took November and December off of running. I got new shoes, orthotics and started back up in January - no issues, February - no issues, March - BAM and they're back. They're not terrible and they're regular shin splints that work themselves out after a few minutes of running - not the kind I had before. However, I really want to start increasing my distances but I'm afraid of really screwing them up again.

Am I doomed to run on tracks and treadmills except for race days? The hills in my neighborhood are what seemed to bring them out again. Flat neighborhoods don't exist in hill country (it's actually the geographical name of the area). I know I overstride some and I probably need to increase my spm, and I'm working on that, but it's just me off.

I think I just wanted to vent - but if anyone has suggestions PLEASE help me out here. I'm desperate. lol

I had the same exact issue when I started running regularly.  What it took for me was stretching & more running.  After awhile I just stopped getting them.  I also started trying to run less on the sidewalk and more on the road, road being softer than the sidewalk.

Maybe it was just running too much too soon or something like that but it was very frustrating so I can completely sympathize.

I think if your shoes are good and your form isn't completely crazy, (been told by 2 coaches so far there isn't really a best running style, just some general things that you shouldn't do), that you should just take it slow and ramp up the running in a very controlled manner they will go away, at least that was what worked for me

How bad is the pain? does it subside into the run? or hurt the entire time?

My suggestion would be to take a day or two off, and then ease back into it....do a sufficient w/u where you are working on shortening your stride (I stand taller to remind myself to do this - and no wise cracks Trevor)...if after your warm-up your legs are not in a lot of pain, you can continue to run (but ask yourself if your stride is shorter-don't zone out), followed by a short cool-down.  I would ice using the DIXIE cup method or fill a bucket with ice and water and alternate 5 minutes in/5 minutes out to take down inflammation.  It is really trial and error on how much you should do....with soft tissue stuff I push it a little more, but overdoing it will only hurt you in the long run.

Has anyone ever watched you run? either at a runnng store or through a gait analysis with your PT? If not, I highly recommend it.

I am going to assume your shoes are fine and you are not ramping up mileage like a crazy person.  Right?  If so, one of the primary reasons for shin splints is overstriding. When you overstride, you are actually creating a braking effect each time your foot makes contact with the ground.  That reveberates up the body and can cause shin splints.  As an early runner that happened to me.  I started shortening my stride and working on increasing turn-over.  While I never formally did this, you can count the number of times your left foot (or right) hit the ground in 60 seconds....the goal is around 90, but like RPM's on a bike can vary.  I am a runt and I have worked hard on this over the years, my cadence is around 100.

Let me know your thoughts.

Suzy

I know I overstride and my strides are way too long. Even the short video of my tri last weekend showed that and it was like 2 seconds of my running. I haven't had a stride analysis - I'm not sure where to get one but I'm pretty sure it will just confirm the overstriding bit. I've only been increasing my milage by .25 miles per week - although I've had a poor record of running this months and last due to chest colds, time constraints, etc.

I do need to do a stride count -  you're absolutely right about that. My shoes are good - I went to a tri store and they checked everything out, recommended the right shoes and orthotics, etc. So I guess I know what I need to do then.

Question - keep running on them, or take yet another break? I hate taking breaks - I've come so far and I hate to lose the momentum. *end whine*

No wise cracks here Suz. I have had my flexor longus digiotium issue for a while. it comes and goes. Jeanne maybe its that and not actual shin slints..I to have orthotics, but i think for me they are a couple years old, and my footfall isnt what is was 2 years ago.

John - You're full of it. I'm new and nervous - don't be surprised if I show up with all that stuff.

Srsly though, I get the feeling the beach patrol aren't too sociable. I just emailed them again today. In case you don't have it, here's their email:

But don't click on the link to email them. I had to add the "s" to the front of the name so the link won't work. Just copy and paste.

Ok, off to run two freakin' miles, then I'm heading to the lake. I don't have a fancy GPS, just an old Garmin etrex, but hubby can use it in the kayak. I'm going to freeze my t*ts off.

just off the phone with beach patrol.  they tell me wtc wanted nothing to do with it. pretty damn lame.

so, on friday at some point i'll be more than happy to hop in the water with you.  i'm far from an expert but we can at least get you comfortable in the water.  its a very easy swim course.  you'll do great!

OK I have a real question ...

I may be slow to this party train but I have discovered the wonderfulness of butt cream on those long rides.  Normally I would not be concerned enough to use it for a sprint or olympic but feel that it would be a good idea for Lonestar.

So is there a tactful, discrete way of applying it w/o running off to a port-o-john?  I wear a trisuit during races and it was a bit awkward trying to get to that area before my last training ride.

Real, helpful answers need only respond, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK Well this might not be the answer you are looking for. But my motto is "There is no modesty in Triathlon" (Or at least that is my experience.)

If it were me, Honestly I would probably just reach down my pants and apply it. I have done so before a group ride as descretely as possible.

Granted I am also the person who has changed in a parking lot after a parctice swim in bike with a towel wrapped around me so I might not be the best female to ask LOL

I do this, too.

Thanks dude. I did go for an OWS yesterday in a local lake, and it wasn't intimidating at all. I do need help with sighting, though. I guess that will come with experience. So yes, I think hopping in the water is a good idea.

I'm also a hunter, and I have one of these that I keep in the car for times when parking lot changing is not feasable. it is VERY quick to set up/tear down, and gives you a great place to change. I think I paid $29 for mine online somewhere (maybe Cabelas?). Well worth having if you swim at the beach alot. The picture below shows the windows open, but they completely zip up for complete privacy.

She said she was reading the no swimming from an email from WTC as we were talking.  She said she’ll confirm with WTC that this is still the case and get back to me.

Ryan - couple of questions.  At 181W, what was your watts to kg ratio at that power level?  Also wondering what the Boise course was like, cause that's a crushing pace.  Last thing, the average - was that the actual average or you pedaling or NP average?

Thanks
I sent you a PM on this... didn't want to bog down the board with a bunch of numbers, but quickly: ~3 w/kg; and that was average watts, NP was slightly higher.
swbkrun - 2010-04-14 5:16 PM
This was Boise--- Not easy to get a "REAL" idea when you are dancing around HUGE puddles, and avoiding lightning storms!  MISERABLE!  And yes if you haven't figured it out yet... LISTEN TO EVERYTHING RYAN says.  He did crush the bike... And the run... and every other race that he does!  (this MAY or MAY NOT be Ryan on the bike you decide !)

My legs are nowhere near that shapely...

and by that he means 22 /121 in M30-34 up in boise.  dude is fast.

Boise has the same thing.  Either hit up the waters on Thursday (if you are around then) or find a place nearby.  I do suggest still going to the swim start and trying to look at the course and pre determine your sighting.

Yep, this seems to be the new trend for wtc events. There's been a lot of discussion on the IMCDA forum on this as well. For Boise we just found a nearby place to swim, because if you were caught swimming the course you were dq. I agree... lame.

How bad is the pain? does it subside into the run? or hurt the entire time?

It gets better after a few minutes. This is why it is different than my stress reaction/stress fracture. That only got worse while running. Also, I can stretch the muscles this time - last time I couldn't get a stretch no matter what position I tried. If I do a forward lunge and press my knee all the way to my chest, pulling myself foward almost to the ground I can feel the muscle stretch. It does seem to help whereas last time NOTHING helped.

The radiologist didn't indicate that there was a problem other than the stress reaction, but I'm not sure how the compartment syndrom thingie is diagnosed. I do have some old stress fractures in my right foot, but my left leg is the one that was injured the worst and the one that picks up the shin splints fastest.

I'll work on the stride and strecthing and see how that goes for a week or two. I'll stay on a track for a bit too. Oh, and ice and streching, definitely.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Oh and about severity - it's NOTHING compared to the stress reaction. That was an 8 or 9, this is a 2 on the pain scale. I couldn't put my foot down without it making me grimace in November. Stairs were nearly enough to make me cry.

John - You're full of it. I'm new and nervous - don't be surprised if I show up with all that stuff.

Srsly though, I get the feeling the beach patrol aren't too sociable. I just emailed them again today. In case you don't have it, here's their email:

s[email protected]

Ok I missed something somewhere but I keep seeing these posts about calling beach patrol.  What's up w/ that?  Is it to find out whether or not we can swim on the course?  I just assumed we could since it was a beach area.  I am scheduled to get int eh water Friday so I'd love to tag along w/ a group.

in the past the rd had galveston beach patrol give an ows clinic.  it was a pretty big hit especially with the first timers.  but now since its a wtc race no, its no more. liability to many lawyers in this mg to repeat what the guy said.  ;-)

moody gardens isn't allowing swimming from there property at all between now and after the race.  or at least that is what i was told this morning by them.

we'll find a place to swim.  but this is something athletes should have been told about prior to now as i would think there are a few that will be a bit surprised by this.

You could also try using a foam roller or the Stick (or a rolling pin) to loosen up your calves and the muscles around your shins before you run.

kickitinok - 2010-04-14 6:09 PM Oh, and while everyone's on the subject of pro sports, how 'bout the OKC Thunder?!? Second year as a franchise, and we're headed to the playoffs....uh-huh.

Ladies: I need a black sports bra. Anyone know where I can purchase one?

Yay, go Thunder!!!!

Have you tried Schlegals or Bicycle Alley downtown?  They've got quite a bit of tri clothing.  Actually, the last time I was in Schlegals, which was about a month ago, they had a pretty good selection of stuff.

Holly - Yes, I practically live at Schlegel's. Did you see their killer selection of She Beest Cycling wear? Adorable! I purchased a blue leopard print shirt. Going back for the skort in a couple of weeks No bras, though...

Sure did.  Love the leopard print tops they have, super cute!!!  This sport is sooo not checking account friendly!
