ironwannabe - 2011-02-28 1:44 PM Does anyone have advice on some swim goggles that they think are awesome? I swim with a pretty standard pair of TYR, but don't love them. Also, they need to be pretty exact in order to keep the water out. I'm afraid that at the IM any contact with my goggles will make 'em leak...
I am huge fan of swedes - cheap, durable and super reliable. I know some people, myself included, that have owned the same pair a very long time without ever having an issue. I have owned one pair of swedes over 10 years now and still have not had a leak.

One pair for ten years!!  WOW! Now that is impressive

I go with Speedo Vanquishers, and I'm a contact lense wearer.

Nice work mrbrad and kaburns.  Here are my numbers.  Considering this has been a snowy February, I am thrilled with these numbers.  I expect the bike number to 'pop' for March.  That is if SPRING ever arrives!

February's totals:

Run:11h 44m 02s  - 88.03 Mi

I keep watching weather.com to see if I can ride outside.  Hoping perhaps for some outside riding this weekend.

The calendar says March, it must be spring.

Nice job IMLP peeps!

My Feb was odd in that I was gone on two trips with limited swim and bikes then. I spent more time doing PT than s/b/r. I am making gains with my PT and am now allowed to start increasing my run volume slowly.

Flying from So Texas to MA today. 85 to 30 and snow and I caught a cold while gone.

Hope everyone has a spectacular March. I'm going to tri camp in 10 days and hope I shake this cold by then. Lots of riding for me this month.

DC- Thanks for posting that video of the IMLP swim start from 2010. I was watching the start while knee deep in the water on the right side of the lake just under the starting line flags. I get chills just thinking about when that cannon went off. So exciting that in less than 5 months someone will be filming all of us as the cannon goes off!

KathyG put the craziness of the swim start in good perspective. There are 2500+ in the water, but we really only deal with the 4 or 5 that are right around us. Also, if you look at the video there are some pockets of open water. I'll be looking for those little sections of open water in July. Kathy, how far from the start flags did you seed yourself?

In the video you see people swimming the first 50 or 100 yards with their heads up looking forward for room to swim. How many of us have practiced this? I'm swimming today and will def. try this out.

There is plenty of room. You just need to have a plan and seed yourself properly. After the first 5 to 10 minutes, you can find some space and will only likely be bumped occasionally. No worries!

AquaSphere Kaimans.  Super soft around the eyes, they DON'T give me racoon eyes, and on average stay leak-free for about 8-months.

X2 and I tried several different kinds before I found these. No leaks and comfortable.

Definitely a big fan of the Vanquishers for racing. They seem to fit well on my face without having to tighten them too much. Everyone's face is a little different though, so the might not work in all situations .

seed yourself properly.  after 5 minutes it calms down.....

also, it is much calmer on the cable line than you think!!.......

just dont start dead center, in front of the cable...start right and swim at an angle to it.

for me, the roughest part of the swim has the 10 mintues or so it took me to get to the cable...once on the cable, draft fest and you don't have to look where you are going.   Ever.

Except for keeping an eye out for those buoys attached to the cable. I swam the course on the afternoon of race day last year. I was cruising along looking down at the cable and WHAM. I thought I was wide enough, but I wasn't.

Agreed... I swam the course a couple days before, and ran into the floats they had out there. You almost want to keep the line about 4-5 feet off to your left.

good advice here.....

this is why it can be very quiet directly over the cable.  everyone swims off to either side to avoid the buoys.

duck dive under the big buoys....swim right over/through those little ones.....

in the end, do what is comfortable for you......

I'm curious to hear from those that have taken that line directly over the cable - how did you fare? Cusetri - have you done this? I've been mulling this over and may try it this year. I've done Placid 3 times but not since 2004 so I realize a lot has changed in terms of the number of athletes. I'm thinking that if it's not too crazy I may have a go.

Hope everyone's healthy and on track!

yes....only I didn't figure it out until 1/4 through the way back on the 1st lap.

I spend 1/2 of my time to the turn bouy getting to the cable line.  Once I could see the line, I stayed just off it.

After rounding the turn bouy, I decided to get right over the cable to see what it was like, and I was surprised....less contact there.

Key take away, for me, is:
Start right (unless you expect 55 minutes or less)
Take your time getting to the  line...slowly merge your way to it.
Get into a good flow once you are over the cable.  Eventually you will know when the buoys are coming based on feel of time.....
You can swim right under the big buoys no problem....but if this concerns you, simply swim around them to the inside....less people there.

So you aren't required to stay to the right of the buoys at all times? (except for the turn buoys?)

You are right just need to stay right of turn buoys at end of course.

I swam just to the left of the buoys 85% of the of the course and yes I did bump into the buoys at times but I learned to anticipate when to expect them. I breath right so it was ideal for me to stay slightly to the left.

Does anyone else ever think the milage or miles per hour reading on their bike computer while on the trainer is low compared to being outside?

I feel like I can sustain higher miles per hour when riding outside than while on the trainer at the same effort. I'm sure there are a lot of factors that could contribute to it.

Thanks!

My advice...Don't pay attention to mph on trainer.  Just pay attention to effort.  I crank mine pretty tight so I can do some big gear work.  It's always way on the low end for me by 4 or 5mph...  I just plug a nominal value of 20mph in on trainer rides to get a general sense of my mileage over time...

As an example, I could go and push 250 watts for an hour on my trainer at home and see 16mph and then take my same bike to Cycle Center down the road and push 200 watts and have it tell me 24mph....It's basically meaningless to me...
