Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by ponderingfox I picked up a Garmin Edge 500 off of Craigslist. It's smaller than I thought it would be! I need to get it set up on my bike along with the cadence sensor. Looking forward to seeing all the data after that. I haven't looked at the cadence sensor yet, but hopefully I can keep the magnets that are already on my bike for my Cateye. Cool! Smaller=less weight - always a good thing! Sounds like you're going to have lots of data to play around with too. The pedals on my "crappo" bike are too far from the frame to be able to use a cadence sensor even though my bike computer is set up to track it. Looking forward getting a nicer bike so I can have more numbers to geek out over. |

I'm in the midst of making some creative goals and capturing more of these moments via photography and video is one of ways I am choosing to execute. I'm kind of like Kate with less and less time tethered to the computer and more and more on the phone so regular posts are a bit cumbersome. I'm so glad that you are doing well! I think that creative goals are awesome and I'll do my best to keep up with you on social media. I have been following your IG feed, it has been pretty cool! And I see Janyne is on there too. Great pics on yours as well! It is neat to see the other side of people. |

Being able to monitor RPMs, and learning what pedaling speed in each gear would mean so far as speed helped a lot last year. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by laffinrock The training logs are a bit cumbersome to look around at other people. I don't know how Judi does it. I look far less than I'd like. I've found getting to people's training logs is really easy when I paste somebody else's Pod list on my dashboard. Then I can just click back and forth. Or if they have Pod list on their dashboard too, I can jump from theirs to the next person. It's much easier than trying to from person here, to log back, back to here, to another log ,etc. I don't think you have a Pod list on your dashboard but can't remember. I don't have a pod list, but know who does and use theirs instead. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, been a while since I posted last, so have a few things to offer my OPINION on. In no particular order..... Johnathon AK, ref running intensities/quantities. I've put your HM time into Macmillan and it seems you're running your runs at the correct intensities. I would be inclined to drop one of the harder sessions and just have three hard sessions a week. Work out 1. A tempo run of 15 min warm up, 40 min @ tempo pace (7:56-8:11min/m), 5 min cool down. (1hr) (7-7.5 miles) or 15 min warm up, 5 x 1 mile intervals @ 7:45 - 8:03 min/m with 5 min RI and a cool down at the end (1hr15-1hr20) (9 miles ish) Work out 2. MSD (Steady State Run) Up to 90 Minutes @ 8:14 - 8:37 min/m (1hr30) (10.4-10.9 miles) Work out 3. LSD. @ 8:50 - 10:10 min/m depending on how beat up your legs are. (2hr-3hr) (11.8 - 20.3 miles) At most, that is 40 miles per week and at least, it's 29.2 miles per week. You could supplement this with EASY/RECOVERY runs, but, if you're training for HIM, I would just stick to the quality workouts. Perhaps you could cycle the quantity/ intensity of runs/biking on a bi-weekly basis. i.e. Increase the bike interval training on the weeks with lower run mileage, and decrease on the weeks with higher mileage. As for the dry land swimming, do they have a concept rowing machine at base? I've read that rowing can supplement swimming strength. Perhaps Yanti could confirm this. Oh, and do plenty of core drills, some advice I need to practice myself, meh. I think we're at the same fitness level at the moment and are training for the same distance, so I'd be interested on what others have to say about what I've posted here, as I'm following this sort of schedule myself, time permitting. As for race wish list, I have too many to list, but five of them are: UTMB http://www.ultratrailmb.com/ Comrades http://www.comrades.com/ Transvulcania http://www.transvulcania.com/index.php/en/ Marathon de Sables http://www.marathondessables.co.uk/ Speedgoat 50KM http://karlmeltzer.com/speedgoat-50k/ Plus a ton of traithlons ![]() Mel, when on the road, I use both distance and time for interval work. I tend to use hill repeats a lot for them. Basically a set distance with an aim to hit a certain time or hold a set power. Can't remember who asked about music selection, but whilst running, I listen to some mixes I've downloaded off soundcloud. I try looking for tracks with BPM of about 180 to try and help my cadence. Here's are a few https://soundcloud.com/runningmixes/heaphones-only-180bpm-3d-sound https://soundcloud.com/runningmixes/runstep-vol-1-180-bpm-dj-diana https://soundcloud.com/runningmixes/runstep-vol-2-180-bpm-dj-diana Erin, that's a tough dog name to shorten. My only suggestion is Butty (slang term for friend over here, kinda like buddy), or even replace the t sound with a soft d, so Bu'dd'on, bud/buddy for short. Roro/Yanti - ref swim analysis, to my untrained eye it appears that you are putting the brakes on with each stroke. When the hand enters its coming in thumb first and when it extends out it goes back up (see 0:26 and 0:40). Other things....... TJ, you must be so proud your boy is gonna serve. Yanti, don't go swimming with all that bling around your neck, be a whole new meaning to a swimming strength session. Monica, good luck with the job interview. M'cSpeedy, I guess the mini taper worked out for you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by laffinrock Originally posted by tigrrruns So, Is there a best way to use the forumÉ Like if I have a new question do I just press reply on the last one or... Also, how do I read your training logs... I have two questions...the first one is about group rides. I found a place close enough to home that requires you be able to ride about 30km in 2hrs. It does not sound too strenuous and they said they would teach me the whole shifting gear things. Im concerned I will be in over my head. I have the fitness to go 2hrs but... Also, what do you do when you literally dont have time for workouts. I have scheduled out my next 4 days, and after I have done everything I have about 20 min left in 24hrs, and thats only sleeping for 4 hours. At this stage is it a do what you can as often as you can or is there a trick to making it all work... I am hoping a couple of plans get cancelled, but I cant count on it. P.s. I usually have better grammar than this. My question mark is a É and my apostraphe is a è and I dont know how to fix it. Hi, Emily. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, just hit "Reply" to the last post to start a new question. If you want to quote any of the previous post (like above), hit "Quote". You can always delete out some of the text if you don't want to quote the whole thing, and if you're responding to just one part of it, it helps to mark that part of the quote in bold. I'm sure there are directions around here somewhere. Maybe one of the more experienced Manatees can point you in the right direction (notice I didn't say "older"! 2. To see people's training logs, left click on their user name. You'll get the option to see their training log, as well a profile, race log, and a couple other things. You can also copy Chris's or Janyne's Manatee list from their training log and put it on your own training log "dashboard". From there, you can just click on whoever's you want to see and you'll get sent right there. And/or you can Friend us all and then go to Community > Friends and see us there! 3. That group ride sounds like a good option, and one that's set up for relative beginners. 30km in 2 hours is a fairly easy pace, especially if the route is relatively flat. If you have a bike computer, you can always check yourself to see if you really can go that far. I'm guessing you'd be fine. Check with the group organizer to confirm that it's a no-drop ride; my guess is that it is given how they'll work with you on learning to shift, etc. Check with the organizer and see if it is "no drop" ride. Do they meet at the corners? Regardless, be sure that you have a cue sheet or are familiar with the route. 4. As for fitting in workouts, this is supposed to be fun. Several other Manatees have struggled with this too (recently, Stacey and Darren). It's pretty common among endurance athletes to bump up against this now and then. If you have to choose between doing a workout and sleeping, I always opt for sleeping, but that's just me. My rationale is that if I don't sleep, I don't have time to recover and I also don't the mental or physical strength to get through a workout. Sounds like there's a lot on your plate right now so I'd say go for fitting in what you can and try to let it go at that. We all have our different commitments and strategies. For me, a good first step is putting it all on a calendar -- kinda like scheduling an appointment with myself. We also discuss this every week when I do the menu and grocery list. (Thursday is a ride day so it'll need to be something quick, etc.) |

I don't have a pod list, but know who does and use theirs instead. Yeah, the Strava group helps with the "seeing what folks are doing for workouts" part. It falls down on the chatter part. For example, I went to Wrightsville and swam and ran and came home. If you drilled down in Strava you could see the details about that (I don't that most people look at the words in Strava, just the routes most of the time but I could be wrong). But then you wouldn't know that I went to the Brueprint grand opening after having a pre-Belmont nap. What I am trying to say is that the feed, in Strava at least, is an improvement over BT in some ways but not in all ways. |

Love it when organizers get creative with race names. I did an adventure race awhile back called the Bearable (at Bear Creek Lake Park) and then recently did the Wild Goose Chase. We have another race around here called the Undy 5000. They usually have race shorts instead of a shirt and it's a fundraiser for colo-rectal cancer awareness. |

![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! Hopefully I am not too late to this party ![]() NAME: Debbie STORY: I was never really super athletic growing up. I started running in my early 30's and loved it. I thought about doing a tri but ended up chickening out. Last year I was diagnosed with cancer and since then, I've been determined to get the most out of life. I'm fairly injury prone so I'm working on more of a balance this time around to keep those pesky ailments in check. I did climb to the Mt. Everest Base Camp last fall which was an AMAZING experience. FAMILY STATUS: I live alone with my pit bull mix pup. Been dating my boyfriend for over a year now. CURRENT TRAINING: I just started the beginner sprint tri program. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Sprint tri on 8/23 BODY COMPOSITION: I would love to ditch about 10-15 pounds and get some of my nice muscle back! |
