kickitinok - 2010-04-14 6:09 PM Oh, and while everyone's on the subject of pro sports, how 'bout the OKC Thunder?!? Second year as a franchise, and we're headed to the playoffs....uh-huh.

Ladies: I need a black sports bra. Anyone know where I can purchase one?

Yay, go Thunder!!!!

Have you tried Schlegals or Bicycle Alley downtown?  They've got quite a bit of tri clothing.  Actually, the last time I was in Schlegals, which was about a month ago, they had a pretty good selection of stuff.

Holly - Yes, I practically live at Schlegel's. Did you see their killer selection of She Beest Cycling wear? Adorable! I purchased a blue leopard print shirt. Going back for the skort in a couple of weeks No bras, though...

Sure did.  Love the leopard print tops they have, super cute!!!  This sport is sooo not checking account friendly!

Can i say "useless without pics" before I go for a run right now? Ok good. Thx. Now for the run.

4 x3 min fast intervals. 2 min recovery
6X 1 min super,duper fast inverals. 1 min recovery.
Running it with a friend so should be too bad.
And then a nice 1 hr massge tonight to ease the pain!

I like that super duper technical language.

It gets better after a few minutes. This is why it is different than my stress reaction/stress fracture. That only got worse while running. Also, I can stretch the muscles this time - last time I couldn't get a stretch no matter what position I tried. If I do a forward lunge and press my knee all the way to my chest, pulling myself foward almost to the ground I can feel the muscle stretch. It does seem to help whereas last time NOTHING helped.

The radiologist didn't indicate that there was a problem other than the stress reaction, but I'm not sure how the compartment syndrom thingie is diagnosed. I do have some old stress fractures in my right foot, but my left leg is the one that was injured the worst and the one that picks up the shin splints fastest.

I'll work on the stride and strecthing and see how that goes for a week or two. I'll stay on a track for a bit too. Oh, and ice and streching, definitely.

WHOA....I suddenly feel out of my league.  Is this the same area where you had a stress reaction?  Even if the pain is a lot less, I would talk to your PT about running on it.  Irritating an area that has been a problem before doesn't seem wise to me.  Personally I would also NOT roller areas that are sore, only those that are tight.  Sounds like you have enough inflammation in those shins, but that is just my philosophy.

Well we had our 5k spring run at work today.  Last fall I averaged 7:11/mile and was hoping to break the 20 min mark this spring.  Well I did... kind of.  They had to shorten the course due to some of the non-paved section being flooded from rains the past couple of days.  Quite hilly, I managed to pull a 7:01 average, not quite the under 20 minute pace, but my legs just did not feel strong from the get go.

Oh well sun is now out so a bike ride is in order tonight.

Good morning everyone!  Well, it's still morning here but you guys have been BUSY!!!

So, very late to the various discussions, but Sam, I globbed a whole bunch of the Assos cream on before I left the motel room.  The trick to this is to try to get ALL bathroom stuff done before you leave, otherwise, well....
Anyhow, it worked fine, stayed on (I wore my wetsuit over tri clothes)...and didn't feel like I needed to reapply.

Jeanie-- I think that everyone gave solid advice...

A few things I might add that I started doing when I started back running 3 yrs ago was to do "toe-taps", where you stand up and keep your heel on the ground and tap with your toe (start out with 50 or 60 per side).  It will feel more difficult on the side where your muscles are tighter (for me that is the right side).   Try it, it's harder than it sounds!  I still do these every day while I dry my hair.  I love to multitask.  I also stand on one foot and spell the alphabet with each foot (while I dry my hair).  My partner thinks I'm kooky, but it has helped me to avoid sprained ankles which I am prone to.  I guess this doesn't really help with your issue, but I thought it'd be nice to share.

Okay, I'm off while it's still morning here.
Have a good day, all!

Thanks Kim!  Maybe I will be able to get in some OWS practice in Texas and I'll try adding cream before I  swim to see how I "feel" afterwards.  Ok NOW I have my reason for really wanting to get into the water.  LOL

I just got off the phone with the volunteer coordinator at Moody Gardens who I'm told has a lot to do with the race set-up on the hotels end.  She said WTC is not allowing any swimming other than during the race.  I specially asked about swimming Friday afternoon and / or Saturday afternoon.  I was told no we were not allowed to.  The lady I spoke with talked to her GM.  He suggested we get in the water at a boat ramp on 61st if we wanted to “test” the waters.

She said she was reading the no swimming from an email from WTC as we were talking.  She said she’ll confirm with WTC that this is still the case and get back to me.

Boise has the same thing.  Either hit up the waters on Thursday (if you are around then) and find a place nearby.  I do suggest still going to the swim start and trying to look at the course and pre determine your sighting.

Yep, this seems to be the new trend for wtc events. There's been a lot of discussion on the IMCDA forum on this as well. For Boise we just found a nearby place to swim, because if you were caught swimming the course you were dq. I agree... lame.

Gotta agree with you Roni. Pretty lame. What is going to happen? Is someone going to get an unfair advantage because they chose to swim the course. I'd say that was a good choice on the competitors part and the course would be open for everyone. Myabe their afraid some one will tear up the swim course

I did however do a PB today. My first 10K under an hour. 58:10 almost did it in my age. 57. Not bad considering it was such a nice day that I booked off well.  "Well I just didn't want to work today"  Actually woke up at 3:00 am with a pounding headache and couldn't shake it. Got halfway to work and had to turn around. Slept until 11:00 then felt decent so went to the gym for a short run and it turned into a 10K.

Hey all!  I think I'm finally caught up on the last 20 pages, LOL!  Here's what I remember (some of this is from last week so bear with me hereSmile):

Swimming - lots of good information about body position and stroke.  Something I need to concentrate on.  I think my stroke is getting better although I don't always pull all the way through.  I noticed that the last couple of times I've been to the pool and I'm trying to work on that.  Also my body rotation - I sometimes feel like I'm "fishtailing" - my legs swing side to side a lot sometimes.   Not sure if this is from over-rotating or a core strength issue.  Any thoughts?

Biking - also lots of good information here although I will admit most of it goes over my headSmile

Congrats to everyone who raced last week!  Sounds like we had some great results.  I've read some of the race reports, hoping to catch up on the rest.

Steve - sorry to hear about the additional problems with your shoulderFrown.  I hope yesterday's surgery fixes the problem for you.  Heal up well!

For those racing this weekend - good luck to you!  Linda - have a great time in Boston!

I won't be racing this weekend, but if I can get my motivation back, I am planning a 6 mile run on Saturday and on Sunday a ride to the gym in the morning, do my swim workout, then a ride back home.  First time getting the bike out this spring and I need to get it done!

Oh and about severity - it's NOTHING compared to the stress reaction. That was an 8 or 9, this is a 2 on the pain scale. I couldn't put my foot down without it making me grimace in November. Stairs were nearly enough to make me cry.

I am having a hard time eating well after my longest workout (Monday, long ride/brick run -- last week this was 5.25 hours total, and they're only gonna get longer). For the last two weeks I've felt sort-of "punk" in the water on Tuesday morning and I think it has to do with my refueling, or lack there-of. And this past Tuesday I woke up at 4am positively starving. My weight is starting to hover about 2-3 lbs. lighter than usual -- not a big deal for me... I'm not TRYING to lose weight, but I won't complain if a few lbs. come off. I'm always lighter this time of year anyway.

I get home from my workout and immediately go for a big chocolate milk (and I've started using my daughter's 2% instead of my usual fat-free). Post-shower I have a big smoothie (lotsa frozen fruit, nonfat plain yogurt, flax, green powder, etc.). Then the problem kicks in... I spend the next 3.5 hours shuttling kids around to classes and end up snacking on a Luna bar or a protein bar, while glugging copious amounts of water to stave off dehydration. I usually grab a chicken sando for dinner, have dessert later, and call it a night. (I'm out and about 4pm-7:30pm.)

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE GO-TO SNACKS/LIGHT MEALS ON THE GO?? I'm thinking I need to start prepping a PBJ the night before when I make up my Infinit -- then it's ready for me to grab and bring along. (I use hearty bread, so get about 150 calories/slice, plus the PB and J.) Usually anything else I eat on the run is fruit or Luna bars or something. Does anyone have any good suggestions for this? I'm never that hungry but am feeling that I need to be eating more/better.

Thanks, oh wise peeps.

I find that a hand full of almonds is quite helpful. Peanuts/walnuts/other nuts/seeds don't do the same as almonds. I think it has to do with the type of protein in almonds or something like that. I can have a handful of almonds (like 10 or 12) and be fine for a couple of hours, where if I went with something else, I'd be sucking down anything and everything.

I've also had good luck with some jerkey or a cheese chunk - but I'd venture to guess almonds are healthier. Just experiment - if you've tried peanuts, try almonds. If you have tried PB&J, and that does not work, try PB&Bananas. For me, my body does not like a ton of variety, so I can handle having a handful of almonds every afternoon at the same time.

tahrens - 2010-04-15 8:21 AM Only the coolest of triathletes can pull off the two watch look, so welcome to the elite club Wink

I am a fan of Under Armour myself. They have lots of black.  Dicks carries a nice selection.  Only problem is they don't go on sale.

Suzy, more important than if it is straight, how does it feel?  If I remember you have a leg length discrepancy so maybe this fitting accounts for that.  My aero bars are not parallel and I want them that way.  Go by feel.

Glen - strength training.  That is one of my goals for this season.  I did a lot in college and am sad that I can't lift as often as I like.  The question is what are you lifting for, strength or larger mass?  Remember with larger mass comes more weight.  Try to visualize this:  you muscles have blood vessels flowing all throughout;  the larger the muscle mass the more compression you have on all those blood vessels when the muscles contract and thus reduced blood flow.  That is why endurance athletes don't have large buldging muscles = reduced blood flow.  The calves are larger b/c they are more explosive (fast twitch) muscles when powering up hills or sprinting on the bike. If you plan on racing the faster races (sprints and olympics) then you want a good balance of fast and slow twitch muscles, but if you plan on going longer work towards the slow twitch direction.  Upper body needs strength in the shoulders for supporting your body in aero and lats for swimming.  Good abs and lower back are needed for all around core strength.

If you want to increase strength but not add too much bulk then do lower weight/ high reps.   It is a bonus if you can combine activities.  For example, do dumbbell bicep curls and alternate leg lifts to the side while standing.  Or military press with dumbbells while squatting on each lift.  Just be very concious of your form.   If you belong to a gym that teaches fitness classes I recommend taking one every now and then for good ideas on new lifting techniques.  Aerobic classes have come a long way from the Jane Fonda days and they incorporate plyometrics, strength training, core, aerobic threshold workouts and active recovery.

I post this last night, have a busy day at work and I am 5+ screens behind here.  This group moves at warp speeds now.

Anyway, Tracy, thanks for the advice.  My goal is to build strength and not mass.  I had not seen that explanation about the blood vessels being compressed by muscles like that, but it makes sense.

I think I will put in a lower weight/higher rep session twice a week, at least to start with and see what happens.

BTW, I have seen some of those classes you mentioned at my gym where they combine aerobics with weights, etc.....they call it Total Conditioning.  Looks more like Total Torture to me.....

Hmmm.  You and I have talked about this a little, but I never asked you what you eat beforehand!  One thing that I was doing before long rides was not eating nearly enough.  Now, I do 2 or 3 servings of oatmeal and 2 pc. pb toast and a banana.

Also, are you doing a 4 hour mix of infinit (8 scoops?)  for the 4 hour ride?  I think I was only doing 3 scoops, thinking it was 3 hours.  duh...
but that's a kim thing not a kyla thing.

The after ride smoothie sounds great.  Any chance you can eat that chicken sandwich with that?  I think it would be "lunch time!"

Good luck, I'm sure the IMers will chime in!

x2 on the almonds.  I am not a nutrition expert, but I find they are great snacks for me, especially late in the afternoon.

jvanis - 2010-04-15 2:58 PM Well we had our 5k spring run at work today.

I'd be very happy if my legs didn't feel right and I was still able to run 7:11/mile pace.

Nice run!   I'd love to run my age!!!  Probably just easier to age for a while.......

I heart almonds -- will try those, thanks. (I also eat almond butter/honey sandos!) I often keep trail mix in the car (almonds, peanuts, cashews, raisins, M&M's) in case I end up in a pickle. Kim, I think I eat well pre-ride. I have two small bowls of granola w/soymilk, spaced out about an hour, with coffee in between. You bring up a good point, though -- I am not taking in enough calories during my ride. I'm mixing the Infinit with 2 scoops/bottle, and adding a bottle during the ride, so going through 3 bottles. Really I should go through 4, or mix them stronger. I do eat bloks during the ride, so I am getting more calories there, but probably not more than 150. So I need to look at taking in more calories during the workout as well. Thanks for making me realize that... More food for thought, so to speak!!
