From my blog today....asking for thoughts cause I am almost incapable of putting together a coherent sentence at this point.

I am feeling so beaten up.  I wore the calf sleeves yesterday afternoon to help the legs recover and they do feel better for that....Soaked in the jacuzzi with epsom salts for at least half an hour and just feel as if someone took a baseball bat to me.  Looked at this week's plan and it makes no sense.

It reads:Monday 4--Tuesday 8--Thursday 4--Saturday 17.  That is HALF my mileage for the week on one run.  Sounds a bit heavy.

Looked at the other plan I started with and it reads:  Monday 4--Tuesday 8--Wednesday 4--Friday 8--Saturday 17.  I don't think I can do such high volume....that's why I changed plans, it was just too much.  But doing half the weeks distance in the long run is painful in too many ways.  I might take the original plan mileage but drop one of the 8 milers to 5 or 6.  Thoughts?

Judi, in looking at your logs, I don't really  understand the plan. You'd been doing somewhere in the 20's for weekly mileage, then all the sudden did near 50 two weeks ago. And for some time you have had your 2nd biggest run on Friday and then the long run Saturday and it's 50-80% longer than the other.  It looks like you made way too big a jump in mileage the one week and are also stacking too much mileage too close together much of the time. If you're really hurting a lot, you may need some recovery. And for future mileage, does your schedule permit you to move some of those days around? Need to spread the bigger days apart and possible flatten out the mileage or maybe decrease it some depending on how bad you feel.

I swapped plans out about 3 weeks ago from a more intense one to a lighter one.  The original plan called for a longish pace run the day prior to the long run of the week.

My new plan still has a pace run but it is generally 2 days before the long run.  I had to flip days around last week due to scheduling conflicts.

Part of the week with the 50 miles was because the half marathon was on a Sunday and I usually do the long run on Saturday so that week had 2 long runs spaced 6 days apart.  Yes, it sucked....but I didn't see much way around it with the HM on a Sunday and getting back on plan post race.

Ok, I see that now. The Sat to Sun Mov also shifted the HM from Aug to Sept. So going forward it's going to be those two close proximity runs. The 2 day separation should help some, but I'm also curious as to what constitutes a "pace run". Couldn't tell too much detail from the notes. I'd think it'd be more like Tues/Wed for that, but 2 day separation is automatically an issue. Very confident it's figuring out some sort of balance with these particular runs that will make the difference for you. Also saw that you walk when necessary, are you getting a feel for when that is? Can you tell before the run starts, or rather early on, if walking at some point will be likely?

On another note, do others put workout details under the blog entry? I tend to put anything related to a workout in with the workout and leave the blog for more general stuff. It doesn't really matter when looking at the blog area, but it does on the calendar. Scanning over things goes much better and faster with all workout details in with the specific workout. The blog comments will show when Comments is clicked, but then it's necessary to bounce back and forth or memorize more information.

This generic plan does not give specific details of doing a particular amount at a certain pace or hills vs speed work outs.  It's a generic plan that I did not spend the etra $50 for the interactive program telling me all those details.

IF I were using a detailed plan, I would indicate what the specifics were for each work out.  Instead I have a list of mileage for each day with the"pace run" as  the one before the long one.   I think he intends that the pace run be done at higher intensity.  I just haven't got any intensity in my legs right now.  They feel dead most of the time. They don't hurt, calves are okay (that's the big worry area)  hip flexors are fine.....

I like to enter details when I have them, but usually the route will at least indicate elevation if people want to see that.  Thing is, I don't have a lot of running routes with higher volume.  I tend to do repeats of smaller loops so there's always a convenient pit stop for the bathroom/ fresh water if needed.  I just haven't bothered to separate out the various loops this year.  I used to enter each loop with it's specific time but for all the volume it's just too much to mentally sort out and keep track of.

Ok, yeah, get a better handle on the mileage first, so it's not so daunting to fit in. Then look at more intensity. Do consider some strides here and there though, as those can help with running economy without costing much. Usually when I don't feel like putting any of those in I know to be careful as I'm really pushing how much I should be doing. Or even have pushed a little over.

The logs part was meant to be a suggestion to consider, not that anyone HAS to do all that. Just adding the thought process on how some find it useful. And with that I was thinking more in terms of what the "pace" part of the workout looked like. You're not really doing any specific work there, so nothing really lost. When I do those I'll spell it out in there what I did. Such as 1x20' tempo along with some indication of effort. Or 4x5' @"some pace" w/1' recovery. Or just comments about how things felt that day. Any joints getting sore, achy this or that. Tired from the bike, or whatever. For elevation and terrain details I'll look someplace that has more details available, like Garmin Connect or Strava as I'll want more specifics on it. Here I might just indicate that it was "hilly".

Like you, I tend to put the workout details with the workout.  The exception is that if I want to write a story that happened on a ride or something, then sometimes that goes in the blog area.  I'm kinda inconsistent with where I put the stories, I think.

I saw your query in your blog over the weekend and I had to kind of think on it for a bit.  I'd keep your long run as whatever is in the plan and then figure out how many days you can run and divide up the remaining mileage however suits you -- say 4, 6, 8, 3 for this week plus your long run.   (Really, a running Manatee should answer the mileage part, I've never done a marathon without a crap ton of cross training.)

If you use the jacuzzi, remember to keep water tepid.  Hot water will add to the inflammation.

RACE REPORT / NEW HYDRATION SETUP / HAPPY MONDAY

Here is the Manatee Summary of my Race Saturday

First off I had a blast!! Most of you know that my goals right now are my 70.3 next month, my 70.3 in April and my first Full Ironman next May. That said I was no trained or prepared for a sprint race. I did this race because it was put on by my club and it has sentimental value considering this was my first race 12 months ago.

Short Summary: I improved by 15 minutes! Awesome!

SWIM: I taught myself to swim 14 months ago with youtube videos, reading books, Total Immersion, and posting videos of my swim on the Manatee thread for analysis by Yanti and others. That said I was thrilled with my swim Saturday. I stayed right with the pack and even left most of the pack behind on the second half. I was out of my comfort zone swimming at that pace for the swim but it was a blast.

BIKE: Decent bike over a very rolling hills course. The highlight of my day....The dismount. Remember a few weeks ago when I was asking y'all about the flying dismount. Well I decided to do it. Did it save me any time? Probably not more than a few seconds but it sure felt cool

RUN: I am a brand new runner and so speed is not my thing right now. Just endurance. That said I was pleased with a 8:30 avg on the run considering I was completely exhausted coming off the bike riding above threshold for 45 minutes.

HYDRATION:
Back in Feb we discussed my hydration problems. One of the problems I was having was drinking through my straw was causing me to be very out of breath and I was not getting enough water in because of that. The day before the race I threw away my speedfill and switched to xlab's torpedo mount between the arms. First off I know how risky this was but again this was not technically an A race for me. Second, WOW, it worked! The risk paid off! I had no problems drinking with my bottle mounted here and I took in much more water than I normally take in during a race. There was no work and I could maintain my normal breathing just squirting water in my mouth. Loved this new setup!!

Overall I had a great weekend but I resume my 70.3 training tomorrow. Can't wait for my 70.3 next month!!!!

I survived my first masters swim session today!!!  It helped that I was at least acquainted with everyone who showed up and that there weren't many of us since this is a new program so it isn't well-known yet.  I was happy for the small group, too, because we could each have our own lane.  2 incredibly fast friends (one guy, one girl who beat some of the pros' swim times in races on a regular basis), a pro triathlete, another decent swimmer and my friend who is recovering from foot surgery, then the bottom of the barrel, me.  I was a little intimidated and nervous but thankfully my injured friend was next to me and let me know it was OK to just do what I can do and that I won't be able to do what they do. Not being right next to the fastest folks didn't make me as frustrated, seeing them zip by, lapping me over and over.

Today he was observing us as we did the workout to see where we stood with ability, fitness, endurance, etc.  It wouldn't surprise me if more individualized attention didn't come until next week or later.  I'm tired now, but eventually getting up so early will become easier, I suspect.

Good work!  I'm sure that the individualized attention will come later and if nothing else, it gets you to the pool and when you get there, the workout has some variety.  (Chris, are you paying attention?!)

If I can make myself do it, you can do it, Chris!  I think it will be a good learning experience for me.  It's held at F&M College - the head swim coach is leading the program and I think he said sometimes the assistant coach will be there to help, too.  I swam more today than I ever swam at one time on my own, and did the most structured swim workout I've ever done (and kicking, too!) and lived to tell the tale.  The pool is so lovely there.

I am trying to get up the motivation to head for the treadmill after spending the last two days here...

It just keeps getting better. My son can't stand to leave the place, "Dad said we could stay here all day. It's not even dark yet!", and my girl finds everything amazing. Can't say that I blame her.Laughing

OK. Treadmill. Then some catching up on Pod news and RRs.

Yeah, yeah.

Melanie, I am just really impressed with the whole deal. It sounds like a really good experience and a great way to get acquainted with the Master's program. Good job on getting out of your comfort zone and doing it.

Look at you, only one session in and you are already an ambassador.

That's so awesome!

Put it on an incline and tell yourself you need this to better hike up and out of the canyons. Wink And yes, it does help.

Originally posted by JJ- Well one year ago I tried my very first Triathlon. Tomorrow is my one year anniversary in this crazy sport and it has changed my life. Even tho this is just a sprint it means alot since it was my first one and I plan to crush last years time. Hopefully I will. Either way it's going to be a fun day. Oh and for those that are wondering....I did throw away the speedfill and switch to BTA bottle. Can't believe I completely changed my hydration system the day before a race but I think it's going to be best in the long run. Here we go!!

Happy Anniversary!!!

Quick update on me: I've been avoiding BT.  I'm getting down about the injury, mainly that it's not really healing as quickly as I would like.  It's really hard to stay off the leg with a toddler in the house and I'm probably not wearing the boot around the house as much as I should.  I go back in next week, but I'm pretty sure Ortho is going to tell me I'm not allowed to do anything for the time being.

On the job front: I've had 2 phone interviews.  Got a call this afternoon (a few hours after the second) that they want to bring me up for an in-person interview!  Super exciting.  This is for a job in Philadelphia, so it would be really easy for my family to relocate up there with DH's job.  He'd just transfer offices and they'd pay for our move.
