Glen - your family 5K is a fantastic idea!   It is never too late to get the kids up and moving. I'll bet your son will be very inspired come race day. There are always young teenage boys at races it will be cool for him to see it.  Training runs are great opportunities to talk with the kids as well.  Have a wonderful time and keep it up.

Suzy- glad the foot felt better this morning.  I find Jose Cuevoro is a great pain killer and mood lifter on those tough days.  Keep working on growning those webbed feet and gills.  I hear Gilly Weed works well.  Wink I'll keep your friend and his family in my thougths and prayers.

Steve - great job on those runs.  You're a maniac!!

Robert - I've never counted my cadance but I know that increasing cadance vs lengthening stride works well for me to increase speed.  Also, as Kim mentioned, I have better form while running faster.  I think after all this therapy jazz I will adapt my running style into a run as long as you can with a fast cadance (on my toes, bla bla) and then take a walk break if need be instead of slowing down.  When I slow down I sink in my hips and then all my crap starts to fall apart.

No Races for me until the indoor Team Time Trial on the Compu-trainer at the Multi-Sport Expo on Jan 30th.  Better get out of spin class soon and rent some time at the LBS on the trainer..........Good luck to everybody that is racing over the Holidays.

Happy Holidays to everybody.  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Festivus, I hope everybody has safe travels with the weather that is coming in and enjoys being with Family and Friends.  This is the time of year to remember that your job won't take care of you when you are sick or injured.  Your friends and family will.

Thanks to everybody for all the help, inspires, smart a$$ comments, and conversations to keep my training and racing on schedule in 2009.  Looking forward to a great 2010!   Cool

Oh, as far as cadence goes, I have 15 minute runs every so often on my schedule to just work on that, right now I am checking for at least 21 left or right foot strikes in 15 seconds.  Which is pretty much spot on what I am running now.  So I guess that would make 84 per minute.

Also, not sure if you guys saw this RR.  How cool would that be.

It's Wednesday!  Anyone racing this holiday weekend?  Tell us about it!

And if you aren't racing, what's the one thing you are looking forward to over the Holiday?

For me, it is catching up with a lot of friends and family I rarely see for parties in Madison and at our place in Northern Wisconsin.  I'm off work from today through January 3rd so plenty of time to relax and just hang out! The Shain's lead a stress free life over the holidays!

PS Two other websites I love are Triathlete and Endurance Corner.

No races but I've been cleared to run!!!!   Therapist said he wants me to take a short run before I see him next to see how I hold up!  I've never been so excited to run 2 miles in my life!!   Come Sunday we are driving out to Kansas to see my family.  Haven't seen them since the summer so I am really looking forward to it.  Don't know if they've invented the internet in the part of Kansas where my family lives but I'll do my best to keep up with my BT family.

That's great Tracy!  Are you going to get whipped by nephew (at least that is what I remember) again in a race (Firecracker 10k was it?) over the holidays?  I'm willing to be that subject comes up....

Ha ha, very good memory Andy. I thought about it but I think I'll put his uncle Doug on him instead. Can't keep up with a 13year old cross country star.   However I got him a kettlebell and the Perfect Pushup for Christmas so maybe I'll challenge him to some type of strength contest.

No races but we are taking our bikes (2 mountain and 2 road) to Va Beach to visit my family.  Scottie wants to get in a long road session while my sister got a new mountain bike and she wants to try it out on some "trails" so hopefully that will counteract all of the ham, pumpkin pancakes and Napa wine to be consumed while we are visiting.

Happy Holidays and safe travels to everyone!!!

Not racing but I have my first FTP test today.

LOL, I don't test well.  My current FTP is based on a 1hr TT race so I went with that.

Should be interesting.

Have Vo2 max test on Tuesday.  Comes with our coaching plan, keep meaning to ask him if we are doing bike and run, one week is bike other is run, just not sure which is first.

They have all kinds of fancy tests at this place.

gdctex - 2009-12-22 4:20 PM Where to begin....there is so much information and support in this group that it gets a bit overwhelming for a rookie like me...but fun and really helpful too.  I just wanted to say thanks, again, for all the info and inspires to date.  I am still trying to figure out all the features on this site with inspires, logs, etc.

I did my weight training today.  It was a struggle, but I gutted through it.  I think the biggest mistake I made was due to a change in routine today, I did not eat well before working out.  It showed by the time I got to the last few sets.

Tomorrow is swim day, so I will digest all the links and tips that everyone has provided on the early catch technique.  I am hoping for that 'ah-ha' moment soon, maybe tomorrow?

I did want to share a personal story that is in progress. My wife and I signed my two teenagers up for the 5k that is held in conjunction with the Houston Marathon in January.  She plans to run the HM, and I will run with the kids in the 5k.

Long story short, it has been a saga with my 15 year daughter who had her 3rd knee surgery in November (that is a story for another thread...a long story).  Today she got the clearance from her PT to run in the 5k, so we are pleased.

My son is a different story.  A great kid, but a 6' tall, video game playing couch potato not in small part due to the poor example I have set for most of his 13 years.   Well, today, we got him outside running and started a program to go from 0 to 5K  in six weeks.  He also has asthma, but that is controlled now.  He did the run today with a positive attitude before and after the run.  My wife and I are elated.....small steps with low key encouragement.....teenagers do not like to be over-coached by their parents.....

Anyway, we will be working with him over the holidays into January to get him, and our daughter, ready for the 5k.  Wish us luck....and any tips to share for this kind of situation, I would love to hear them.  I know it is a bit outside the scope of this MG, but thought I would put that out there.

Sorry for the long post.

Glen

I did something similar about 2 1/2 years ago with my kids - our son was 16, daughter was 13.  They had told me they wanted to run the July 4th 5k with me (DH doesn't run) so I signed them up.  They never did any kind of training beforehand even though we tried to explain to them that they should.  They both did the run but swore they'd never do another one - turned out to be harder than they expected (why did they think we were trying to get them to train properly?).  Anyway, for 2 years neither one of them ran another step unless they had to - our daughter plays soccer so it was part of practices for her.  Imagine my surprise when our daughter told us she wanted to run on the cross country team at HS this year!  Then I find out that our son has been running a couple miles a day at the gym at college this year.  So we went from 2 kids who swore they'd never run again to 2 kids who now run pretty regularly.

I guess my advice is - keep doing what you're doing, encouraging but not pushing (you're right, teenagers do not like to be over-coached by their parentsSmile), and setting a good example.  They'll pick up on it, especially if they see it as just something fun and not as a chore.

Good luck with your races!

I'm racing this weekend!  Just a short 2 miler on Saturday morning - part of the Frostbite Series I'm doing with my daughter.  Well, we're both running the races - she finishes way ahead of meSmile.  Should be a nice, cold morning with possible snow flurries.  Good thing Santa is bringing both of us some winter running gear.

We're expecting to get let out of work around 2 today and then I'm off until Jan 4th! We probably won't do much over the holidays besides spending Christmas Eve at my parents' house and then Christmas dinner at my sister's.  My mom wants me to go to Little Rock with her for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary party on New Year's Eve, but I don't know if I'll go.  I was really looking forward to having some time off work where I could just relax.  It would be nice to see some relatives that I haven't seen in a long time (we're kind of scattered all over the country), but the idea of traveling down there and back isn't really appealing.  I'll have to think about it some more.

I hope everyone has a safe, wonderful holiday!

Thanks for all the thoughts on the Zinn books. I might take you up in the future John on having things shipped to you first! I have had a lot of issues with getting things to Canada (like my wetsuit).

I do have a tri bike which is why I would prefer the tri book, but I'm also totally ignorant about almost all aspects of bike maintenance. I thought since it was easily available (and cheap!) I might start with the road book and see how far that gets me before I really need to seek out the tri book. I have my bike downstairs waiting on pedals that I am dying to get (ordered off ebay) so I can FINALLY get my act together. I have not forgotten about needing to post video of my first time on rollers.

As for this weekend, no races for me. I will do my best to get some running in while we cross the province visiting relatives. My goal is to have no more than two off days in the next week.

I'm looking forward to the insanity of Christmas morning.  My kids are already bouncnig off the walls.

OMG -- my kids are sooooooooo manic!!! I have got to get them some serious exercise today (it's only 8:30am). We're talking exhausting. I wish they could go and run 10 miles! It's too cold for a bike ride with them, most likely.

No races planned. Looking forward to unloading the Christmas loot and then chillin' with my  hubby and a game of Scrabble or a puzzle or a good book (time to start a new one -- what was your favorite book you read this year?). We have a low-key Christmas this year with no visitors, which is a blessing and a curse. Hubby has a birthday coming up too, so we'll have a grown-up dinner for that and also the kids and I will bake him a fabulous cake.

Determined to keep up the bike/run consistency... will add in the swim after the 1st of the year, likely!
