Yo!  It's Wednesday and time to spill your weekend race plans!  I know of at least one dude heading south for Nationals, but who else is giving it a go?  Do you have a strategy? or are you winging it?

1st race since IM on Saturday. Running a 10k. Don't think I have my fitness back fully yet after taking 4 months or so off to get fat. But going to give it a go!!

Taking this week off from racing to get some stuff done around the house, starting to work with a cycling specific coach,  it will be interesting to see how his bike workouts will differ from my past tri-coach workouts.

I'm doing a 5K this weekend.  I haven't done a 5K in ages, and it's time to lay to rest an old goal of going sub-30 on it.  Having said that, my 10k PB is now 56:33, and I've gone sub-30 on the run of sprint triathlons, so it isn't actually a challenging goal.  With that in mind, my real goal is to blow away my old personal best on this distance.

I'm racing a 5k as well.  First one in a long time and it will be on tired legs from a 3.5 hr long ride the day before.  Should be interesting.  I have no idea what to expect.

Linda- I believe Linda is still in the Bahamas. I know she had swimming with dolphins on her schedule but I hope the rest of her time is relaxing with pina coladas.  We might be waiting a while on that race report.

GL other racing peeps!

Ragnar Relay(200 mile relay) in Southern California Friday and Saturday with my wife, sister, and friends from work.  I stacked workouts Thursday- Monday last week so I could enjoy the race.  Wiped out this morning with a long day on tap.

Suzy- Boston seems to change their rules every year, it's frustrating to me.  It doesn't change my goal though.

Good luck to all the racing peeps this weekend!  Dig deep.

Alright I'll give you a briefing of my itinerary and race strategy. So we're packing up the van's tonight with our bikes/wetsuits/gear and then getting one last pool swim after that. We're leaving DC bright and early tomorrow morning for our 14 hour endurance ride (brutal). Hopefully we'll get down without a problem, unpack and tune up out bikes tomorrow night. Friday we're going for an early morning bike, picking up our packets, and trying to get a swim in before we head to the pasta party (USAT throws this for us which is pretty cool, get to meet/eat with all the other teams)

RACE DAY!

Get to the race site about 5 am and set up my transition area. The girls race starts before the guys race at 730. So i'm going to watch that for as long as I can then go and get ready. I plan on warming up around 10 o'clock putting my wetsuit on and heading down to the river, race starts at 1030 but I'm in the 4th wave. The course is in a river and is set up as a loop. There is minimal current so I don't believe that's going to be a factor. I'm a pretty strong swimmer so I plan on just hitting my stroke and coasting through it. Hopefully I'll be able to find someone to draft of, I love drafting. Swim time goal - 24. T1 - 2 minutes.

The Bike course is a 2 loop course that is rolling hills. From what I remember It's not so much rolling as three big hills on the way there and you get to bomb down those hills on the way back. I plan on keeping a steady pace when working my way up the hills and bombing as fast as I can on the way back to make up time. I'm a relatively weak climber but I can hold a good pace on the flats and I can fly down hills because of my weight. Bike time goal - 1:12 T2 - 1:30

The run course is basically divided into 2 stages. The run starts with a monstrous hill, brutally awful if I remember correctly. I just want to survive that and then hopefully I can settle into my true race pace. the first 5K starts with that hill then goes into a pretty twisty turvy run through a residential neighborhood with a few hills (up and down). The second 5k is an out and back that is totally flat. Similar to the bike i'im trying to just survive the first portion then hopefully I can crush the back half of the run and actually pick my pace up, going for the negative split. Run time goal - 46:30

Race Goal - 2 hours and 26 minutes (I really just want to break 2:30)

Well that's my detailed race plan, however, the weather forecast is calling for thunderstorms and downpours so i have a feeling it's going to get shot to hell. We'll see!

Nada here.  My first tri of the year is at the end of the month.  If all works out this Friday, I may get a chance to ride the course.  If not, I'll just figure it out as I go.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

You can pick anywhere in BC? Any of 'burbs of Vancouver would work. Whistler(where the skiing in the olympics was held) is less than an hour drive up the mountain.

My sister lives in Maple Ridge, and likes it out there. It does tend to rain ALOT in the winter months. Like our Seattle peeps know as well.

I'd love to live out there, but not alot going on in my industry.

Just move into Seattle.  It's only a couple hours south of Vancouver, and 3 hours south of Whistler/Blackcomb.  You can do that commute everyday... "It's opposite of the traffic!"

Serious question!

Is it normal to have difficulty getting your HR up in the mornings sometimes? For the past two days, I haven't been able to get my HR up to the right zones while biking when my effort felt the same (or even harder). I wasn't sure if my HR was just being poky or if the HR monitor was being faulty. Tried to take my pulse myself,  but I have an irregular heartbeat and always have trouble finding it.

perusing your logs, looks like this was on a trainer... then yep.  hr will lag.  depending on the type of workout (well, really most workouts) increasing my warm up before hitting the main set seems to help.  even increasing it but 5-10 minutes.

Me too, on the trainer. What has helped me to get that reading more in line is to do a 15 minute warm up, then 2 minutes of gradually building to a super hard effort where only the last 20 seconds are very hard, then soft pedal for 2 minutes and repeat. This also seems to get my legs ready for the main set. I spin easy for another 5' before starting.

I made it through my stress test.  It sucked, but was NORMAL.  Had the echo today. The tech didn't run out screaming "CODE BLUE" so I am pretty sure I'll be living for a while yet.  After the crazy work week I've had, I'd like to kick up my heels a little this weekend Wink!
