My race report is up!

This was the same course as my last race, the Wednesday night tri.  I wasn't taking this race too seriously, but I was hoping to redeem myself on the bike and run.  My running prep consisted of three short runs the week before.  But it turned out great!  I pretty much did seven minute miles!  Starting to feel good about pushing for a 5k PR this fall!

On the job front: I've had 2 phone interviews.  Got a call this afternoon (a few hours after the second) that they want to bring me up for an in-person interview!  Super exciting.  This is for a job in Philadelphia, so it would be really easy for my family to relocate up there with DH's job.  He'd just transfer offices and they'd pay for our move.

Boo on the injury, HAPPY DANCE on the job front!!!

Boo on the leg

YAY for interviews!

BOO for a possible relocation--though I do love the Philadelphia area and miss it a lot so there would be incentives for me to visit more.

Originally posted by JJ- RACE REPORT / NEW HYDRATION SETUP / HAPPY MONDAY Here is the Manatee Summary of my Race Saturday First off I had a blast!! Most of you know that my goals right now are my 70.3 next month, my 70.3 in April and my first Full Ironman next May. That said I was no trained or prepared for a sprint race. I did this race because it was put on by my club and it has sentimental value considering this was my first race 12 months ago. Short Summary: I improved by 15 minutes! Awesome! SWIM: I taught myself to swim 14 months ago with youtube videos, reading books, Total Immersion, and posting videos of my swim on the Manatee thread for analysis by Yanti and others. That said I was thrilled with my swim Saturday. I stayed right with the pack and even left most of the pack behind on the second half. I was out of my comfort zone swimming at that pace for the swim but it was a blast. BIKE: Decent bike over a very rolling hills course. The highlight of my day....The dismount. Remember a few weeks ago when I was asking y'all about the flying dismount. Well I decided to do it. Did it save me any time? Probably not more than a few seconds but it sure felt cool RUN: I am a brand new runner and so speed is not my thing right now. Just endurance. That said I was pleased with a 8:30 avg on the run considering I was completely exhausted coming off the bike riding above threshold for 45 minutes. HYDRATION: Back in Feb we discussed my hydration problems. One of the problems I was having was drinking through my straw was causing me to be very out of breath and I was not getting enough water in because of that. The day before the race I threw away my speedfill and switched to xlab's torpedo mount between the arms. First off I know how risky this was but again this was not technically an A race for me. Second, WOW, it worked! The risk paid off! I had no problems drinking with my bottle mounted here and I took in much more water than I normally take in during a race. There was no work and I could maintain my normal breathing just squirting water in my mouth. Loved this new setup!! Overall I had a great weekend but I resume my 70.3 training tomorrow. Can't wait for my 70.3 next month!!!! Oh and if you want more details here ya go....... http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

OOOOOOOh-EEEEEEEEE!  15min is fantastic! Plus the no face plant flying dismount? Extra WIN Laughing

I survived my first masters swim session today!!!  It helped that I was at least acquainted with everyone who showed up and that there weren't many of us since this is a new program so it isn't well-known yet.  I was happy for the small group, too, because we could each have our own lane.  2 incredibly fast friends (one guy, one girl who beat some of the pros' swim times in races on a regular basis), a pro triathlete, another decent swimmer and my friend who is recovering from foot surgery, then the bottom of the barrel, me.  I was a little intimidated and nervous but thankfully my injured friend was next to me and let me know it was OK to just do what I can do and that I won't be able to do what they do. Not being right next to the fastest folks didn't make me as frustrated, seeing them zip by, lapping me over and over.

Today he was observing us as we did the workout to see where we stood with ability, fitness, endurance, etc.  It wouldn't surprise me if more individualized attention didn't come until next week or later.  I'm tired now, but eventually getting up so early will become easier, I suspect.

So glad you liked day 1   And a small group sounds great to ease your frustrations. Yay!

Jo had been out on a mega long ride on the road and killed it with the stopping and in lipping and such. And when she got home she stacked it in her driveway. This was about 5 days before she was supposed to do her HIM in Queensland. Anyway it turns out that she broke her wrist, so no HIM. Just stalking instead.

It just keeps getting better. My son can't stand to leave the place, "Dad said we could stay here all day. It's not even dark yet!", and my girl finds everything amazing. Can't say that I blame her.Laughing

OK. Treadmill. Then some catching up on Pod news and RRs.

Put it on an incline and tell yourself you need this to better hike up and out of the canyons. Wink And yes, it does help.

LOL...I couldn't bring myself to do it. Tomorrow, after the trip magic has worn off.

Checked the air in jogging stroller...checked the temp (97*, not deathly hot?)...filled water bottle with ice...and went for a slow 30min jog.

Looks like a really nice day there! I saw a number of animals, but no snake like you did. Know what type it was? This is the profile of some of the surrounding trails to get up top. When the kids are older, it's well worth getting up higher. The pathways are rather well done, they just go up a lot and do it fast. Have to hike up nearly as high as the Burj Khalifa to do it, but the view is stunning. From what I did, Observation Point is the best spot. The other two overlooks are great when out there, but it's a lot of hiking through what could be any old forest to get there. Ok for me, but most won't want to go that far.

It was gorgeous! A bit cloudy and late flash flood warnings on Saturday evening, then yesterday was perfect.

Here's the snake:  http://dwrcdc.nr.utah.gov/rsgis2/search/Display.asp?FlNm=masttaen      It was going to cross the busy Emerald Pools trail, then my son ran up   We watched it climb back into a shrub and across to a tree and then up 5-6 feet to hang out. I think about 20 people stopped to see it. Not a typical sighting.

We thought about doing the Hidden Canyon trail (850 ft climb within a mile), but after doing the Emerald Pools my son wanted to go down into some of the lower canyons/washes on the east side of the big tunnel. Looks like Observation Point goes on up past Hidden Canyon. Cool!

Observation Point. Angels Landing. The Narrows. Ahhhhh...so tempting, and both my kids are mountain goats. But then there's good parental sense.  Five more years??? I can wait. Sealed

Those are great hikes, but definitely not a little kid endeavor!

Mmm, a cold beer and some pizza.   Real pizza; no nonsensical metaphor.    Must incorporate said repast into my training plan.

That is all....  CoolInnocent

I'd say it's down to what kind of money you want to spend.  you could get a PowerTap for a lot less.  DC Rainmaker did a recent comparison of the rundown of some of the current power meters out there.

I agree that a power meter would make trainer rides more interesting.  I'm not looking forward to the trainer this winter.

Jonathan, Have you signed up to trainerroad? I found it really useful last winter whilst on the trainer. They're just putting some training program's together for HIM an IM too. There was an email shot out on the weekend offering the ability to pay for a year subscription, for 90 bucks I think, which is really good value for what you get. I know it's not a proper power meter, but, as a tool for development, i think it's awesome.

I haven't read much on them because I have a different type I'm happy with, but they do seem alright. There are several types that do a good job. The difference is mainly in the price and things like use between bikes/wheelsets. Mainly it comes down to 3 types, pedals like these, in the crankset (Quarq, SRM), or in the wheel hub (Powertap). Do you want to use this on more than one bike? More than one wheel? Then the price point.

I agree. Take care of yourself.

Xray probably isn't going to show it.  Mine never do.  Bone scan is even cheaper than an MRI if you can find one.

Ok, so far behind...JJ congrats on your race.  Salty too.  Mel cool on the Masters.  I found it helped my swimming hugely (is that a word?).  Jo and Yanti and Jen get better.  Jen congrats on the job interviews, I'll keep my fingies crossed for you.  I know I have missed stuff sorry!

I am doggie sitting a 90lb Newfie/collie cross.  He reminds me so much of my Oreo.  He is a patient at the hospital I still occasionally work at and I just love him.  His name is Trevor.  He's keeping me busy
