First DNF - experienced these crazy lower back spasms through the whole swim, then in T1 mishandled my bike a bit. Nothing out of the ordinary, really: I was running with my bike and had to kinda jump from one side of the back wheel to the other in the crowd and just as soon as I did that it felt like someone jabbed in the low back with a knife. Rolled on out on the course, but the first little climb out of town was pretty tweaky in my lower back. The only upside was that it was the most comfortable in the aerobars - I couldnt sit up on the horns. When I stopped a couple of times to try an stretch out I it was difficult to stand up straight, and when I would finally get upright then I couldn't bend back over. Made it up the climbs and back into town, but it was just getting worse and worse and I knew there was no way I could run, so rolled into T2 and handed in my chip. If you ever want to DNF, then I highly reccomend you do it early - there was no lines and no waiting in the Med tent, and the medical crew spent about 45 minutes with me. Docs said it looks like I have a locked SI joint, whatever that is. I guess my own doc is going to be busy with me this week.... Ah, well, so it goes.

Other than my own personal issues, the rolling start is super - I lined up right at 1:05 and was in the water in about a minute-and-a-half. The weather is actually OK - temp is currently about 70 degrees, and it was raining pretty steady for the Keene descent, but fairly dry after that - drizzling again when I went in the med tent, but it looks like it has stopped now. Thunderstorms may be rolling in in an hour or two and for the rest of the day/into the evening though.

Quick shower then out to cheer for Ms. TankBoy, James, and the rest of the BT crew.

My heart aches for you... that's so tough. Good luck to your wife and the other racers. Sending big healing vibes your way.

Rusty, so sorry to hear this.  If you think a bit of massage/ART might help check out the ART tent and ask for Laura. She's my PT and a very, very good ART practitioner. That might give you a bit of temporary relief until you can get home and see your doc.

Now off to sign up for the Sedona Half marathon in Feb.  I have another race in mind for Sept but I can sign up last minute for that one.  It's also a HM, but a trail run

Awesome! Those all sound great, especially the trail run.

So sorry to hear, Rusty.  But it sounds like you're keeping a good attitude about it.  Hope Mrs. TankBoy continues to have a good race.  Enjoy spectating as much as you can....hope your back pain is under control for the day and you can get it worked out when you get back.

I'm watching the finish. Have seen a couple friends come in and one that is catching...she shows up over and over;-)  Pretty sure I just saw James cross the finish at 11:52'ish. Mizz TankBoy seems to be holding nice and steady. Hoping the weather continues to hold. It is storming like crazy here.

Rusty...sucks that your back gave you issues, but smart on you for pulling the plug.  I hope the back gets back to normal ASAP.

I raced today and it was an adventure.  Suffered on the run a bit and I don't think I've learned how to push/pace these Oly(ish) distance races.  Still a lot of fun though and a 4ish minute PR.  RR to come later, which should be a rather interesting read.  LOL.

Back from mountain biking in Sedonda with a friend and am rather bloodied up and my bike is in need of some serious repair (which in reality might be my excuse for a new bike, even though everything is fixable).  Started with a stick in the derailleur.  Bent it up pretty darn bad but as luck would have it a bike mechanic was on his way past me and stopped and straightened it as much as he could.  So I was kind of stuck in a gear range that made the hills tough but most doable.  Made for some tired legs though.  Then we got to a point in the trail when the sign pointed in one direction and said difficult, and pointed down for extreme.  So we went up.  At some point however I did end up on the extreme trail.  Sadly it wasn't by riding down there but instead sliding, and a tiny bit of rolling, all with the bike attached of course.  But, at least I did not run into a cactus, cause they were there.  That fall caused a bit more damage to the bike.  It was an awesome ride despite all that though.

I got not just full on permission to buy a new bike, but Tina is over there looking online for which bike I should buy.  So it was all totally worth it for me.  lol  I've always said, it's not really a mountain bike ride until there's a little blood...

Hey all - thanks so much for the well wishes! I have had a blast watching the race with friends - it is so much fun watching everyone giving it there all out on the course. JT crushed her time from last year, PR'ing the course by a little over an hour-and-a-half. I spoke with James briefly before my phone died just a little while ago. I am sure he will chime in when he gets a chance, but he was in very good spirits. His feet got beat up on the run but he dug it out when he realized he could still sneak in under 12 hours. We spent part of the afternoon spectating with his wife - good lord, she is a riot! But then again, I guess she would have to be, right?  Laughing

Originally posted by brigby1 I seem to have a growing disparity between swim speed and pull speed. Swim has at least been consistent, but some of the pulls have really been taking off. Last night at masters there was a set of 8 x 100y on 1:30 in the middle of the main set and I came in on 1:15-1:17 for all of them. Really hoping that translates well to wetsuit speed, but also working figuring out why there is such a difference. Some days it's like 6 sec/100. Never had much of any difference until very recently.

We just did a set this morning that was 8x200m alternating swim and pull -- my swim and pull times were literally exactly the same as one another.  It makes sense to me that one would be faster pulling than swimming, so what you're seeing makes logical sense to me.  I still have no idea how I'm so bad at pulling (that said, I've improved quite a lot, which just tells you how bad I used to be!).

I do think those who get a good advantage pulling tend to get a good advantage with the wetsuit, so hopefully it'll work out the same for you.

Up until recently I've been rather similar with swim vs pull times. One might be slightly faster than the other any given day, but usually within say 2 sec of each other. Pulling was easier, but wasn't really much faster. It's just rather recently that the pulling jumped out so far ahead. Probably picked up some type of hitch in the swim form.

Thanks all for tracking me and thank you for your support! I wish I had better results for you but this was my day and I dealt with it the best I could. This is my third Lake Placid and I still finished.

The swim was a rolling self seeding start which was great. It allowed me to draft quite a bit. My swim was on track for a sub 1 hour until I got back to the dock area on the final lap. I got kicked in the face hard and was stunned for a bit. Then getting around the dock there must have been a few hundred swimmers exiting, so slow exit. Lesson is that I paced too conservatively and did not take into account a crowded swim exit. The exit was the same for the1st and final lap. All in all it was a good swim.

The bike was a very wet start. Going down the Keene decent in rain is not too much fun. I think that added stress plays on you. Anyway I over paced the 1st lap for the conditions. The wind picked up quite a bit the second lap. Josh Beck passed me on the road from Keene to Jay on the second lap. Actually he flew passed. I bet he was doing over 30mph. All in all good bike as well.

The run was very painful on my feet. I am a forefoot striker and have been dealing with issues with my metatarsals. Lots of walking then when I would run it was a lot of heals striking. Changing a gate to get through a marathon is always fun. I knew a 4hr marathon was out so I struggled to get less than 5hr but came in just over 5hr. I should have jogged more that would have limited the time loss.

My times for the day.

Swim: 1:01:29
T1: 5:50
Bike: 5:39:21
T2: 4:16
Run: 5:01:06
Overall: 11:52:02

Congratulations to all that competed. Ironman is such a tough day to get 100% right. I thank God that I was allowed to get here to compete and finish healthy.

Congratulations James, sounds like tough conditions!

The 2 mins faster with the speed suit we talked about would have gotten you sub 1 hour for the swim.  Tongue out

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
