Question...as I wait for the athlete's guide;

Is there or is there not an official walk through of the transition area with someone from IM explaining what happens when?

And as much as I hate to ask, does someone have the official, no guess work involved, absolute cutoff times along the way?

No "walk through" of transition areas, but you will be able to get a feel for the layout as you drop off your transition bags. Also during the race, there are so many volunteers pointing and directing - it will be very obvious where you are supposed to go.

Cut off times should be the same as last year, in last year's athlete guide.

Swim Cut-Off: Officially closes at 9:20 a.m. Two hours
and twenty minutes after swim start
Bike Cut-Off: Officially closes at 5:30 p.m. Any athlete still on the bike after this time will be disqualified
and removed from the race.
Run Cut-off: Officially closes at 12:00 a.m. Any athlete still on the run after this time will be considered
DNF.

Many thanks.  Are there mid-course cutoffs too?  I heard that here on this page but can't confirm that.  Never heard of them before.

There are. There is some sort of a cut off @ mile 19. One of my friends got pulled at mile 19 of the run last year. I don't recall the time, though... maybe 1030? I can do a little research and find out.

EDITED TO ADD: There is a 10:30 cut off. It's either mile 19 or 20 of the run.

Yes it's between mile 19 and 20.... and 10:30pm

I scouted the course last year before I knew about the last minute changes.  The only serious hill I recall is Observatory.  There are a few other little climbs here-and-there on the course, but nothing too serious apart from Obs Hill.

Assuming that's in this year (and it looks like it is to me based on map, but I'm not 100%), it's definitely one to take a look at before the race so you can mentally prepare/plan for it.

I go from moments of I am ready! to did I train enough? to I didn't train enough...get out there and do more training...no the training is done now, to don't kill those that stuck by your side while you were getting the training done...hmmmm I think I need to find something to do! Definitely ready for taper....

1882 is my highest race number I have ever had at IM.

I wonder how many people the WTC has allowed to enter for this race?? My guess is 3,000 with about 2,700 racing.

I had the same question. I looked through bib numbers for awhile last night and saw a male in the 70 year old age group who was number 2800 something. So that says something. Something like "hey, what a crowded swim start"

Nice!  I think I've had each of those moments, too, in the last 24 hours.  Just dropped the bike of at the shop for a final race check.  Told them to replace anything that looks remotely worn.  It should be ready for my final semi-long bike this weekend.

I told my wife that this Saturday I'll actually be finished with training by noon,  and she looked at me like I had two heads. Guess that means she'll have to kick the secret boyfriend out of the house early this weekend.  Smile

Heading off for my LAST LONG RUN!

The Observatory hill is huge. We will run it 2x. There are other little inclines here and there, as I recall, but Observatory hill is the biggest by far. It feels like climbing Mt. Everest when you're that far into an Ironman. It's shortish, though, from what I remember.

Way to calm everyones fears . I just look at Observatory hill as a great time to take a walk break and reasses how the day is going. Or, if I'm all ready walking, a time to walk even slower.

That's what I remember thinking when I saw it (except the shortish part).  Thanks for confirming my fears...

Woohoo!

I'm #471.

And now that the Athletes Guide is up, I have something new to review top to bottom and obsess over.

I'm supposed to be in taper, but my coach still has me doing a 4 hour ride and 16 mile run this weekend.  Not my max, but still seems like big volume for so-called taper.  Trust in the coach...

You can think about the fact that when you come down that hill, you will be going up to the state street turnaround where there are TONS of people to get you moving again!
