Manatees, I need some training advice.  For my run training, I'm doing 6-7 five-minute intervals with increasing amounts of running and decreasing amounts of walking.  I've been changing the ratio after doing 2 sessions and I'm running 2x/week.  My goal is to just be able to run a full 5k with minimal to no walking; I'm not all that concerned about time.  My very first tri (a sprint) is in August, so I'm mostly just trying to build a base.

I just started doing 3:30 running/1:30 walking.  By about the 4th rep, I'm gasping for air in the run.  If I stop for 30 seconds or so, I'm okay and can go back to running.  Do you think I should hang out at the 3:30/1:30 for a few weeks and let myself take that little break, or drop back to 3/2 for a little while longer?  Or should I be doing something different altogether?

During the run interval, can you run slower? So that you aren't gasping?

I'm not sure I can run any slower.  I already feel like I'm running as slow as molasses in January.  Also, when I say I stop to catch my breath, I'm actually walking, not completely stopped.  Maybe I'm starting out too fast and trying too hard to keep a steady pace?  I'm typically doing ~2.8 mi. in ~30 min.

Start slower if you can and really work on decreasing that walk and increasing the block of running as you have been, even if it feels reeeaaaaallly slow.

A lot of this is just willing yourself to keep running. I know it's difficult in the beginning but you can do it!

For pretty much everyone it likely should feel really slow. Perhaps someone else can double check the math, but I see 9minutes of walking and 21 minutes of running in 30' of activity with that 3:30/1:30 split. And you said ~2.8 miles in 30'. Walking at 15 min/mi pace would mean running near 9:30 min/mi. That is fast for walking and run pace would only go up as walking pace decreased. Walking near 20 min/mi pace would mean running at 8:50-something per mile. Could be wrong, but think that's faster than what a number of other manatees are doing their easy runs at.

I am going to echo what others have said about slowing down, Mary.  When I first started running, I went so slowly that all the grannies with their walkers were passing me.  I paid attention to my breathing: if I was starting to huff and puff, I slowed down.  Sometimes it felt like the walk breaks were faster than the running.  Just keep at it, it will come.  The other thing I would recommend, if you can, is run more.  Add 1 or 2 more runs a week, even if they are only 10 or 15 minutes.

I am by no means the running guru that others are, but I'm in a similar boat as you with a run/walk "plan".

A couple of thoughts:

-twice a week isn't a lot of time spent...so changing your ratio after just two sessions may be too quick?

- how did you choose your intervals? Arbitrarily or started out where you weren't gasping?

-have you tried setting an overall time (30min?) and running til you felt the need to walk, then picking up the run when you were ready? "running by feel"

*Run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard*

I'm a great believer in run-walk and still use it for all my long runs. If you're gasping for air during the run interval then you're going too fast. The idea should be that you gradually increase the running intervals at a conversational pace.

To improve you will need to be running 3 times per week as a minimum and you should aim for 2 shorter runs maybe 20 minutes plus one longer run of 30 plus per week. All the running should be at a comfortable pace especially the longer one.

Have you read any of Jeff Galloways books? He lays it all out very clearly and gives guidelines on what run-walk interval based on your Magic Mile pace. I used one of his plans for my first HM and have used some of the principles in my training since then. I've got bad knees from rugby and dread to think what an MRI would show so quite often have to build back very carefully after any break in training - like now.

When I'm building back I'll start with 1 min run 1 min walk then add a minute of running when I feel no niggles ending up at a 4:1 ratio as my regular long run ratio. My short runs are done either as easy runs with quick walks at the first sign of any weird knee pains or as faster intervals and tempo intervals. Really these are all interval runs, even the long runs, just intervals at different intensities.

I'm not fast but using this type of training has got me to 44mins for 10km, 22 mins 5k, 1:40 half marathon and 3:52 marathons which are results I never believed I could get initially! Just stick to it and don't worry about pace.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody.  I really appreciate the help and support!!  I'll play around with pace, time, and frequency and knock off the comparisons to other people's training logs.  Nobody mentioned the last thing; I'll bet none of you know what I'm talking about.

I almost gave in to that desire but I work in a University legal department and figured it probably wouldn't be a good idea.  It really would have eased my pain but alas, I had to suffer in silence.

Yes! No comparisons allowed. Unless, of course, you want to feel better about your running and look at mine.

I'd second the idea of getting in more runs before making what you're doing any longer, like what was said in Tom's questions just before.

And build off the fitness you have, not the fitness you want. Like you realized, the others can be used for motivation in sticking with your plan and checking up on each other, but keep learning what's right for you and building on that. So don't do something like copy mine, but do go ahead and look through for ideas and ask questions.

Monday after my tri we went for a drive that included a stop at a chocolatier in Madrid (NM, not Spain) (made famous by the movie Wild Hogs) (the town, not the chocolatier) and I got some chocolate with chunks of sesame sticks mixed in. YUM!!!!!!!!

Here's my race report finally!  I had a real good time at the race.  It was great to get out and set a baseline.  Now that I'm running again, I expect the 5k time to drop pretty quickly.  I even passed along the tri bug to a friend!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
