My Daughter is also volunteering. She's driving athletes/coaches to and from the Richmond oval. I get a text message every once in awhile with a "guess who I just gave a ride"?

Sweet!

Question on the mogul competition. What is the purpose of the black bands they wear below their knees? I thought it might be there for the judges to gauge knee movement but then I saw one skier who didn't have them.

I'm not sure what you are talking about.  I have seen all the white ones at the knees to do just that, let you judge if there are breaks in the legs...  I will look more closely if they are on again.

Kido - 2010-02-15 10:55 AM I'm a little sad they modified the Luge start.  I feel like it hurt some of the athletes.  AND they were still hitting 90mph.  Maybe the wall and curve mods would have been enough.  Should have left the start where it was, IMO.

What makes me sad is that the women's luge start is lower than the men's, unless there is a good reason for it... anyone know why?

Ok, maybe they were white, but there (last night) was one skier who did not have the bands at the knees.

OMG, what would that do to the men's egos if they started at the same spot!!!!    They are so delicate...

But for real:  Same reason I assume.  To cut down the speeds, which is sort of silly because of their reduced weight, they probably slide slower anyway and a little strength at the start...

Whole sale slider safety changes I guess.

???  Maybe it's not a rule?  I think I saw someone with a different color, but they were still there.

Some of the commentary that I saw said, exactly that. The purpose was so that the judges could gauge their knee movement. But wearing the bands is personal choice, and some skiiers don't think it makes a difference and so don't wear them. It looks like most of the bands were built into the suits, but one woman I saw, looked like she had duct taped hers on.

I have seen cool ones on the slopes.  One had half of the yellow "smiley face" on each knee.  So when together, you get a whole smiley face!  I thought it was entertaining.

Just home from work and making the most of the time difference - live for a few hours and then I have to lopp off to bed and watch highlights before work tomorrow.

There's an American in the medals but an American just wiped out too.

I've taught my 4 year old to know when one is in the lead because the time differential is shown in green - she's loving it and shouting "green, green, green" and then "nooooo" when it's black.  Love it!!! Olympic addict in the making....

The color depends on the color of the outfit.  The Canadians had mostly white outfits (with some red) and the knee "band" was red.

It's a contrast color to help with the judging on leg/knee placement.  As per a thread I found:

so judges can judge how well your form is (how well you keep your knees together)

Kido - 2010-02-15 1:03 PM Anyone know what they shoot in the biathlon? I assume .22 rimfire. But I could be wrong. Going to google it...

wiki agrees with me... .22 bolt action...

The rifles for biathlon are awesome! I love how little they have to move their fingers to reload. So impressive to watch.
Can you imagine pulling into the station with HR >180 and having to shoot like that? Absolutely nutz!

Silver dollar sized target (prone).  From how far away?  Cool talent.

From Wikipedia:

The biathlete carries the small bore rifle, which weighs at least 3.5 kilograms (7.7 lb), including ammunition in magazines on her/his back during the race. The rifles use .22 LR ammunition and are bolt action or Fortner (straight-pull bolt) action.

The target range shooting distance is 50 metres (160 ft). There are five circular targets to be hit in each shooting round. When shooting in the prone position the target diameter is 45 millimetres (1.8 in), when shooting in the standing position the target diameter is 115 millimetres (4.5 in). On all modern biathlon ranges, the targets are self-indicating, in that they flip from black to white when hit, giving the biathlete as well as the spectators instant visual feedback for each shot fired.

Have you ever seen the episode of Top Gear where they do this from an SUV? Jeremy Clarkson gets his wife's car to compete in and doesn't know how to lay the backseat flat so he can shoot from prone? He calls her from the race to figure out how his own car works! Too funny!

Anyone else see the biathlete who shot from the standing position yesterday because he was behind?  It was impressive.  He missed one shot, but they commented that he was a stronger skiier, so it would be an advantage for him.

I'm canning my swim to watch the Olympics. There's some irony in that - dedicated to the max athletes who are inspiring and heroic have inspired me to spend an hour on extra on the sofa!!  Ah well, there's always tomorrow....

Instead of prone?  You can do that?  I know it's a disadvantage, but they allow it?  Nice.  I LOVE you can do that and play some strategy...

NOW, did the 20-25 seconds to do the penalty lap cost more than getting up and down out of prone (I'm assuming that's what the case is).

To be honest, I didn't notice that.

I don't think it's that much quicker, but, I think it takes more energy and saps more energy having to get down and then get back up X amount of times and shoot 100% then miss once and do a lap.  Dunno.

You can!  It's a strategy thing.  For him, they were saying that the penalty lap would be faster than getting up and getting down from prone.  It was really impressive to watch.  He was off skiing before the rifle was fully on.

I was also wondering if they have to adjust for windage...  It's obvious they know range, that's a constant.  But I did see one or two guys adjusting their sites a click or two.  Must be for the wind....

However, I'm sure they try to protect the shooting area a little from bad winds, but it IS still outside...

Spoilers.

Was watching hte 15 k cross country ski earlier, that was such a great endurance race! and great to see so many "non winter" nations, including a peruvian, nepalian, ethiopian brazilian and portugese ski'er.

Also what really astonished me was the nordic combined. i mean, a ski jump and then you do a cross country ski, what the flip?!

Watched the snowboard cross earlier too, that was insanely close and i was really rooting for the canadians because the americans just worked together so much in the heats to lock out everyone else!

There are several wind flags down the shooting lanes. Depending on the angle and direction of the wind you adjust the sights from what you had when you zeroed your rifle so you have to pay attention to this when you are zeroing. When your skiing into the range you take a peek and if the flags are moving differently then you make an adjustment. How many clicks you move the sights depends on how much the wind has changed. There is a time period alloted to zero your rifle before the race. Each team is assigned a lane for this and it usually ends about 15 minutes before the first skier starts. During the zero period you shoot on paper targets and the coach spots from a position behind the lane and gives the racer adjustments. The knob on top of the rifle moves the sights up or down depending on which direction you turn it and the knob on the side moves the sights right or left. Not only do you have to worry about the wind, but the sun also can effect your view of the target. So if it is cloudy when you zeroed but came out during the race you need to make an adjustment to your sights. The key to shooting well is to get your heart rate down before getting into position to shoot. So that means slowing the pace down before getting to the range. When I was competing if my heart rate was above 155 I usually would not shoot to well, below that I was more accurate. So depending on the terrian before the range you may have to take it easier shorter or farther out. Some courses have an uphill prior to entering the range so you need to back off the pace even more. Ideally you want to shot on the lane you zeroed on. In the mens 10k you ski a penalty loop for each miss. In the 20k each miss is one minute added to your time. Same for the womens 7.5k and 15k.

Sorry if long winded. Love this sport and it is what I did for 15 years before getting into triathlons.

I was really digging on the boarder cross.  Both the prelim time trials to establish position and the actual races themselves.

Men's downhill coverage seemed remarkably short and sort of boring, actually.  I was hoping for more...

I despise snowboarders, ever since some little schmuck barreled into me on my very first (EVER) downhill ski attempt while in Colorado.  The effer didn't even say sorry.  Yep, first time I really ever skiied and I attempt it in Colorado, about 14 years ago.  Then I get knocked down.  Stupid snowboarder.  Luckily he made it down the hill and lost himself in the crowd before I could.  I digress.

After hating snowboarders all these years, I actually liked the snowboard race.  There's some good tactics going on along with the control and technique.

Yeah I was hoping for more coverage of the downhill than just the three medal runs, an american, a favorite and a crash too.  Hopefully Universal Sports will replay the race in it's entirety later on at some point.  I'm really looking forward to the women's downhill tomorrow.  Lindsey Vonn didn't have a great training run (came in 20th) but we'll see if she's just playing mind games with the rest of the field.

If you like the boarder cross just wait until the skier cross, it's faster and has bigger air, not to mention they're carrying poles in their hands!  I love the olympics, I busted out my jacket from when I worked the Salt Lake games, even though its a bit musty...
