Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I've been thinking about logistics as well. It's hard enough just to get the training in with my 1 year old, being self employed etc... Now figuring out how this is all going to work is almost as tough as the actual training. I figure I'll just hope for the best the night before and the baby will wake up early with us with a smile on her face ready to go (Not likely ) If not I'll just have to make due with whatever comes our way as we do every day. Training is going well. My run feels strong but I need to get in the water much, much more. Just bought a bike so I'll be building up the miles! Wife got a new job so my schedule has changed. Still trying to figure out how I'm going to get it all done but so far so good. Can't wait for the race!! |

Regular 124 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Hi everybody. I'm new to this thread. I did IM AZ last year & am signed up for IM CdA this year. Here's the catch: I DNF'ed at Full Vineman in '09 & would like to get retribution, and in theory, would be in top shape by summer. But Vineman is 5 weeks after IM CdA. Is this enough time for a recovery/rebuild cycle? Or are they too close? Thx |

Is this enough time for a recovery/rebuild cycle? Or are they too close? Thx I raced 3 IMs in 2010 and yes, I think 5 weeks is fine. Just decide which race is going to be your "A" race and have "fun" racing the other. |

But Vineman is 5 weeks after IM CdA. Is this enough time for a recovery/rebuild cycle? Or are they too close? Thx I did CdA in 2009, great venue! A few people have done IM's back-to-back, so it's possible with 5 weeks to have 2 decent races, but there are certainly risks to consider. I was signed up to do Steelhead in '09 6 weeks after CdA but crashed at CdA and broke my collarbone. DNS'd Steelhead. So there's the flukey things like that to consider as well as the "fatigue/motivation" and typical post-race malaise. You'll also need to decide how much to back off CdA to be ready for Vineman (it'll be at least a little bit most likely). |

Extreme Veteran 487 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Hi all. I'm in for my first 140.6. Thanks to the race veterans for the info, especially for all those pictures. Training is coming along nicely, especially now that winter is relenting a bit. And I'm loving my new P2... never knew cycling could be so much fun. I have a question -- is anyone talking about sharing a VRBO or anything like that? I have friends and family coming in that I'll stay with Friday night and beyond, but I'm looking for a place to stay Thursday and maybe Wednesday night. Any ideas?

We've booked a hotel in Santa Rosa for Wednesday--Tuesday(?) but but might be interested in sharing a house if dates (and costs) work out. Haven't made travel reservations (yet) so it could shift to Thursday and we could check out Monday. We'll split up the better part of 2 weeks between the race, Yosimite, and the Greater SF metro area before heading back to the midwest. |

Cool. I just booked my flight out there. I get in early AM on Thursday. There was someone in the 3-for-2 thread that asked about a house too... I'll send them a message and see if they're still interested. BTW, we're also headed to Yosemite after the race, well, after a day of vineyards and creameries. |

Sure Parked at Windsor high school. I've ridden the course plenty over the past few years so I don't need to follow directions. If you park at Windsor, just follow the directions from the Vineman course (posted on Vineman site) for the second loop and you are all set! |

Added 1 bike and 1 swim to my base workouts, still far behind where I would llike to be, but feel the need to do Boston. Lets see 300 + miles on the bike, 25k+ in the swin and at least 75+ miles on the run this month guys! |

Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Was sick for 2 1/2 weeks, the wife's been out of town for the last week and I have my 13 month old on my own. Needless to say it's been frustrating and hard to get the training in, (this week especially) but i've been finding the time to knock a bit out. Feel like a sling shot ready to build. Wife's back Tomorrow night and weather permitting I can get a long run in Sun then ready to put in some hours next week! Hope trainings going well for you all! |

Regular 81 Tahoe City, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I completely understand where you're coming from.... My husband was gone 6 out of 7 weeks in Jan, Feb and Mar. We have a 2 and 4 year old. The training is very difficult to get in! And now, to top it all off, we just got another 2 feet of snow overnight. That makes almost 40 feet of snow this winter. I feel like I'm never going to get off the treadmill and the bike trainer! But I have no doubt that when you want something bad enough you'll make it happen!! Congrats on your wife coming home and Good Luck with your training! |

Regular 84 California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I'm signed up for Vineman full, this will be the first time I'm attacking a 140.6 . Last year was my first season doing triathlon, with a couple of olympics and the Vineman 70.3 race which was awesome!
I'm currently training for Oceanside (HIM) in 2 weeks, will then take about a month of unstructured training (which will include a sprint triathlon but also tough 114 mile bike century) before starting the real training for Vineman approx 12 weeks out from race day. |

Lots of rollers. Elevation is posted on the site: http://www.vineman.com/Assets/Maps/Full+Vineman+Bike+Course+Elevation.pdf |

Lots of rollers with 2 bigger climbs per lap. Vineman 70.3 has a little over 2000ft climbing in it, so for the Full, expect to be somewhere between 4000 and 4500. |

Lots of rollers. Elevation is posted on the site: http://www.vineman.com/Assets/Maps/Full+Vineman+Bike+Course+Elevation.pdf Thanks- not sure how I missed that. Yikes- lots-o-climbing! The profile looks like it's a 2 loop course, but the description says it a point to point bike. Is it 2 loops and then a little extra so we don't finish at the bike start and that's why they are calling it point-to-point?? I'm confused. |

Yes, it's point-to-point because the bike does not start/end at the same location. |

Is it 2 loops and then a little extra so we don't finish at the bike start and that's why they are calling it point-to-point?? I'm confused. It is both point to point (T1 and T2 are in different locations) and a 2 loop course. After T1, there is a bit that you will only ride once to get to the loop section. Then you'll finish up the first loop as you pass by Windsor High School where T2 is located and do another loop. I would not say there is lots of climbing on this bike course (only 2 hills that would be called climbs and they are not very long, but this is all relative to your experience), although there are lots of rollers along the course. This is one of the more mild IM distance bike courses. Not totally flat like some, but the elevation gain would only be about half that of courses like IM LP or IM Moo. Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Agree, it is 4000 feet ish elevation gain, but yes only 2 climbs, only 1 that you will be dreadding on lap 2, but the rollers will wear you down. They will be fine the first lap, but the second lap you will start going up them slower and slower.... depending on your bike finess level. I go up them slower and slower. The wind also picks up on the 2nd lap. The road is also not in as good of condition as some of the other IMs. I was a bit disappointed with the bumpy road in places. CDA had many more of those annoying 100-200 foot elevation gains where Vienman has the 50-75 foot elevation gains, just enough to be annoying. Or at least that is how I remember it. And yes you start at the swim T1 and then ride 8 ish miles to where the first loop starts and then repeat the 52 miles or whatever twice. Also if you have folks watching, you don't actually pass by T2 on the first lap, so they need to walk down several blocks to get to where the first loop goes by.
