Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finished the 127 Hours book recently, I'm currently re-reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, and waiting for the Hornet's Nest book to come out in paper book, and wanting to read Unbroken, and... well, there is an entire library of books that I'd like to have the time to read. |

Can't wait for my son to read them, they were pretty entertaining and fast reads. Also, David Breashears who directed the Everest Imax Movie wrote about the event. I've read all three accounts. I have actually read all three accounts multiple times. I still need to read Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest by Beck Weathers. He was one of the survivors.I saw several references to Into Thin Air on the first page of the thread. May I suggest to all that have read this VERY popular account of the 1996 tragedy on Everest, to PLEASE also read The Climb. It is the account of events as told by Anatoli Boukreev and the survivors that summited shortly before the storm hit. Very interesting to hear the two different view points, one from a man who witnessed at a distance on the mtn, the other a man who was responsible for lives both lost and saved. :/ LOVE David Breashears (aka Mr Mtn GQ ![]() Do you happen to recall the name of his book? THANKS! |

THANKS! High Exposure: An Enduring Passion for Everest and Unforgiving Places. http://www.amazon.ca/High-Exposure-Enduring-Passion-Unforgiving/dp/... It's not wholly about the 1996 Everest disaster. It's his autobiography, but he writes a bit about Everest in it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A few months ago, Library Journal published their Best Audiobooks of 2010 including several audio clips from the book. It's a fairly extensive list with some bestsellers and a fair number of under-the-radar titles as well. Anyone here read Nothing by Janne Teller? It didn't disturb me as much as I thought it would, being billed as "The Lord of the Flies for the 21st century," maybe because I could see just about any group of middle school students falling into this vicious circle of pressure. You must have not read many series of books. ![]() I read the series with my 8th grade sons recently and found them quite entertaining and hard to put down. Ms. Collins does a great job of developing characters and creating the future world in which the saga takes place. While remembering that this is "young adult fiction," a quick google search shows a high level of critical approval, including a couple of "book of the year" awards. I'm currently reading Jose Saramago's Blindness. Took a while to get used to his style, with paragraphs that stretch on for pages, no line breaks within the dialogue, but it eventually hooked me. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bear, we will just have to agree to disagree. My opinion is the writing was TERRIBLE, she has no idea how to write a first person narrative, the books got worse as they went (first one wasn't bad), and the end was rushed and horrible. I have read a lot of books, but this was the worst I have finished. Now I have started some bad books that I couldn't even finish, so I guess there is that :P. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am reading the Fin de Siecle reader. I quite enjoy it. I discovered this week that one of the perks of my job is that I get "concierge" library services. Essentially, I can request a book online, a little library elf goes and finds it for me, and either a) delivers it to my office b) has it mailed to my place or c) puts it on reserve so I can go and pick it up at the library itself. And they can do Interlibrary Loan the same way! |
