amd723 - 2013-04-13 4:53 PM Hey Salty,Just read that Sister Madonna is running Boston (then a week later doing NO 70.3, then a week later St Anthony's, then a week later another 70.3), so in case you need more motivation: don't let this 82 year old nun beat you!

Ah geeze. No pressure.

First Mutti, then a nun.

Not pressure, motivation.

Way to go on your race Jen, especially after having so many problems lately.

I wait in anticipation for a RR TJ, sounds like it was fun.

Nice award(?) Hands Marie, you must have one hell of a paper round, 'cos you look well knackered for a 14 year old.

Good luck all the others waiting to race.

I have a slight confession to make. I completed a 5 km race on Saturday, sort of.... It was a Park Run (do you have those in America?), basically it's a timed, measured, free 5 km run held worldwide on Saturdays. I have been meaning to go for the past couple of months, but I work nights and on the weekends so have been unable to get there. I had this Saturday off, so straight from work I went to the park, after being awake for 23 hours . I arrived early, so done a few laps as warm up, but was running too fast. I think nerves got to me, this being my first race.

At 9:00 am, the guy at the start set us off. Initially, i was going way too fast, caught up in the moment, but soon settled in to a 4:40/km pace behind a woman wearing a very toned pair off running tights  After 2 Km I managed to pass her and stick with the pace, reeling in a few more.

On the last Km, i could hear someone getting coached behind me, and they were closing in on me. I could hear the guy telling the runner to reel me in, felt really weird getting hunted lol. I tried picking up the pace and holding it, my breathing was hard, but I couldn't hear them breathing at all. On the last 1/2 Km they pulled level with me, I looked over to find a man, bimbling past (coach) alongside a girl who looked about 8 years old( turns out she's 13 and part of the local running club), and 3 ft tall. LMAO, anyway, they went on ahead after a while, I tried to hang on, but they beat me by 8 secs. I came in with a new 5km PB, and knocked another 1:10 off, so was happy.

Being my first ?race? I thought it was valuable in assessing how I would react to other people around me, and if I would go off too fast etc. I ended up coming 13th out of 34, and 4 out of 6 for age group, so that gives me something to work on.

Well chuffed, so went out and bought a new pair off daps, and some customised insoles

One other thing, I dropped my parents off at the airport so they can fly back home to Turkey. On one of the advertisement billboards outside an airline was offering deals to the states. One of them was to Boston for 259 pound return. Must be an omen for Salty. So I'm expecting a 2 hr 59 min marathon

bcraht - 2013-04-14 1:11 PM Are you at home right now, Yanti, or in Jakarta?  Bit of a problem at the airport in Bali today?  Eek!  Thank goodness no one was killed!

I'm in Jakarta. A few of you have asked if I'm here permanently ... hm, well Dub6 said it the best, it's the new normal for now. So I'm here most of the time, with fortnightly-ish reprieves from my sister so I can go back to Bali for a few days and mess up the Funny Farm for the Hobbit Maid to put it back in order when I go again.

Unfortunately in the middle of all this my poor brother had to have an emergency appendectomy in Dubai on his way back here from the U.S. (he was meant to be gone a week) but the illness and having to wait for flight clearance delayed him another 2 weeks. Very relieved he's well and received excellent med care in the UAE, but it also put the entire weight of dealing with things here on me, including my father's official memorial on 4/25.

We'll see how Mutti does, but also, how we're going to reorganize the house staff. By we, I suppose I mean I. Sigh. Last night I was ready to remind them all of the very lenient penalties in this country for murder, and prison time often entirely mitigated with blood payments.

To get me to this point, there has to be repeated incidents in which Mutti's health, safety, or well-being was put at significant risk.

Now, a bit more on topic, yes, very glad no one was seriously hurt in the airline incident. Let's just say that budget airlines here give a whole new meaning to the word "cheap" and "no-frills." That particular airline has had 6 crashes in 10 years (one resulting in 25 deaths) and innumerable other safety incidents. That is a VERY high rate. Air traffic industry training, certification, ongoing safety QC, technology, and infrastructure leave a LOT to be desired in this country.

That said, I'm thrilled because at least for the next week, everyone will be on their toes and Lion Air has slashed its prices dramatically. My sister's flying in to Jakarta and out, and I'm taking a few days to go back to Bali while she's here, so this is excellent.

I love ya yanti. Your resilience and still the time to help others when your own needs are currently pretty significant astound me every day. Even if I gave it all up to sit on my couch I'd still be a part of the manatee pod!!!

x2.  Glad your brother is ok and receiving good care, but very sorry that you are having to deal with everything.  I hope you are able to rearrange things without anyone going missing....

Aw man. The New Zealand piglet who adopted us just wrote and sent pics of Khan (his giant, and I mean biggest I've ever seen Rottweiler--doesn't show up in the photo but the personality does) and Khan's pet bunnies. Yes, the bunnies are Khan's pets, not his. They sleep with him and he herds them around the yard! I posted pics of the boy (not the dog) in an earlier thread, very yummy. I miss him, and Taupo. I seem to write that in my journal nearly every day.

Ian (the piglet) calls the rabbits "spoilt rats" and buys them fresh coleslaw to eat from the store!

Awwww...I just want to snuggle all those fuzzy critters!  Rotties are a fav of mine. Helped raise one, and full-grown (120+ lbs), he still thought I was the best mattress to flop onto after a long day.

bcraht - 2013-04-13 11:18 AM I had a bit of a downer start to my day...went out for my run, and just up the street there was a poor wittle squished kitty in the middle of the road...  I promised myself if it was still there when I finished my run I would deal with it.  It was.  I did.  Thankfully it looked like it was quick for the poor little thing.  I wish people who lived near busy roads wouldn't let their kitties outside. Frown

Oh, man. That makes me sad Undecided  I hope your day improved from there.

Ok, I'm awake now :-D

What a night! This race is a 120 mile relay across the Mohave desert from Baker, CA to Las Vegas, NV. There are 20 people per team and the legs are between 5 and 10 miles. I usually do leg 17 which is 7.3 miles with a slight downhill. This year I did leg 16 which is .7 mile "steep" uphill then 6 miles downhill (I posted an elev graph a few days ago).

Well we'd been hearing all day (started at 10 am Saturday) that we were about 10 minutes ahead of our projected time. That was the case when the baton got to the first guy in our car. Then he proceeded to exceed his expected pace but got passed by a couple of teams.

The next guy passed EVERYONE ahead of him and also exceeded his expected pace! So then there are two of us left in our car and our challenge was to hold the lead. (It's not a true lead as its a reverse seeded start but we were stoked nontheless).
So guy 3 holds the lead and it's my turn at about 11:30 PM. I started up the "steep hill", which wasn't bad at all, then I crest the hill. It's time to fly. I just opened up the stride and let gravity work. The support car is always just a bit behind me but they pull up occasionally to see if I need water. The three people in the support car all know me well. One of them is my work-partner and one is one of my trainees. So they pull up first time and my partner tells me I'm averaging 8:20 and I'm 2.7 in. Cool!

Next time they pull up I'm averaging 8:15 at 4.2! I told her "lets finish this thing"! Of, course I needed the bathroom for the last mile :-/ but still tried to hold a good pace. When I handed off the baton DH and my car-mates thought I'd done about 55 minutes for the 6.7! I won't know officially for a while. And the scenery was awesome!

Whew! It was awesome!

bcraht - 2013-04-14 1:11 PM Are you at home right now, Yanti, or in Jakarta?

What??? Surprised or did I read that wrong?

Nope. You read that correctly.

I don't whine much in here and haven't had time to whine much in my blog either, and while Mutti is the part I'm most concerned about, I'm dealing with TEN PEOPLE who apparently between them can't manage to take care of one little old lady who's pretty high-functioning.

The rest of their jobs aren't being done at all or that well, either.

The situation in our family company is significantly worse, but since it only indirectly affects my mother's well-being (putting at risk her financial security, which actually is fine because my dad left a sizable inheritance that due to bureaucracy I'm never expecting to see ... okay, well, months to years) I'm less murderous about it.

But trying to untangle the company situation--in which we have a few hundred employees and a lot of cabals have formed that stole from my dad and from the company for years, and all accused each other of doing it, and filed questionable tax reports in order to have blackmail fodder (and this is just the tip of the iceberg) ... is a lot more complex. At the house, I just need to fire some people and put the fear of Yanti in the others. The company stuff involves a lot of extremely sticky financial, tax, employment, and legal issues.

It's a lot. It's just a lot. Emotionally I'm completely caring for my mother, and wind up doing a lot of direct care as well; I'm grieving myself; on the tail end of healing from injury but it's not 100%; and I've built back up to full-on iron training. That part I like and love and is a salvation ... it's just that everything is a lot.

I do try to remember how very much I have to be grateful for. That, too, is a salvation.

rrrunner - 2013-04-14 11:31 AM Ok, I'm awake now :-D

Nicely done and congratulations!  that sounds like a really fun race.
