Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JJ- - 2013-01-08 2:08 PM I don't know the size or quality of your law enforcement agency, but this cop's behavior is something I would report to the internal affairs division. I know in my agency he'd be in trouble and better not play that game again. It's happened 3-4 times now but by different cars on different roads. I do run against traffic. I do have a track that I run for my speed work but I would go crazy running all of my runs there. The police won't do much good. About a month ago one of the officers almost ran the biking group I was in off the road. He had pleanty of room to go around but obviously was irritated at us riding on the side of the road and pulled up within inches to us. We don't have bike paths or running paths, It's not a very friendly bike or run town at all. Edited by amd723 2013-01-08 4:03 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ohtay Pod. I need help thinking "out loud". Been going to masters since August? September? Costs me $40/month. Not sure I'm gaining a lot of value other than the workout plans and the accountability to get out of bed at 5:30 and go swim. Contemplating a gym membership. $50 enrollment, $35/month, no contract. Has a pool. Has dreadmills. Those would be nice on days I can't get outside because of weather. That doesn't happen often. Not sure it's worth a gym membership. Gym is open more days/longer hours than aquatic center where I swim now. Not sure what the lane sharing situation would be at the gym. If I do the gym I could get DH and DS1 memberships with me for $97/month (plus enrollment fee). This might motivate both of them to be more active. Oooooorrrrrr it could be a waste of money if they never go. It would give me the option to invite DH, tho. I think those are all my pro's/con's. Oh and they are about the same distance from my house so drive time isn't really a factor. Pod-thoughts? |

It's something we've had issues with...although we have to schedule with daycare as well. I like us both having memberships, even though husband trail runs/bikes more lately. It gives me a boost when he goes to gym with me and kids. So having "the option" is worth it |

That means if you try it and don't like it, no biggie. I say ask if they are willing to negotiate the enrollment fee too. Believe it or not most gyms are pretty flexible on this. |

Oh and they are about the same distance from my house so drive time isn't really a factor. Pod-thoughts? My $0.02. I was going to Masters Wed/Fri during the off season, figuring I would start with 3xweek starting in Jan. I have switched my days at Masters due to the coaching situation, but figured I would do the third day on my own (mostly because 3 5:30am days may kill me). But I can already see that I am going to have a hard time motivating myself to get to the pool. Having that coach and those other people makes me accountable. When I am on my own I have a habit of wussing out... Of course, I also hate running on a treadmill, so that would not be a pro for me... ETA: forgot to add the issue about lane sharing and the slow swimmers in the fast lane, the "I don't want to share a lane" crowd. Edited by bcraht 2013-01-08 4:49 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Salty - thanks for the idea about negotiating the initial fee! As for making the workouts, I think I would be disciplined enough to do it, and I actually like the idea of going earlier than I do now. My husband gets up at 4:00 most days so I could get up with him and get my day going. And the dreadmill ... I don't like them either but there are some days here, especially in the spring with our sand storms that I simply can't run outside. |

I'm still at the same speed, if not worse. I actually dread Wednesdays more because he's there. On Monday and Friday I can just get in, do the scheduled workout and be done. Each lane does their own, and I'm usually in a lane alone so I just get it done. When Coach Jason is there I feel like I'm dragging everyone down because he waits for slow-slow me to get to the wall to explain the next exercise and send everyone off. (I'm not the only slow one, there are one or two in the next lane, but I still feel bad for it). |

Johnny - firstly will give all 60 people attention but the slowies get more (oh let's be honest the girls get more) I have changed my stroke completely, I've changed breathing sides, I've stopped kicking and I'm faster and more importantly more confident. The drills all make sense, he gives good advice for racing and in our OWS sessions has us do race starts - deep water, running in etc. He has us swim over each other punching and kicking, he makes sure we are drafting. The man is a legend as a coach and also as a swimmer....watch out for his comeback, he's hoping to reclaim Manhattan in September...and I think he may be doing Alcatraz... If I attended the tri club squad I wouldn't go. Pure and simple. Only time I miss my squad is when I'm too tired to do it justice and I worry I'll let him down. Would you still swim the same amount, would you be able to get that distance in without the push of masters - I wouldn't, just sayin. Actually, I think I would still go 3X per week and I would probably swim further. With our masters we often don't get in to the water until 5 or 6 minutes after the hour because they open at 6:00 (when we are supposed to start) and there is a kiddie swim team waiting for our lanes promptly at 7:00. I suppose it depends on what you're getting out of your Masters. I got Coach Piglet Johnny who is awesome, it costs me $6 and we get a good hour and a half for our money and minimum 3km as well as a weekly OWS in the summer. That is all good enough reason for me. Weather in Melbourne is rarely bad enough to cancel a run and use the dreadmill. a gym wouldn't be worth it for me. This is actually one of the main reasons I am considering this. Remember when I started with masters and we thought coach would "warm up" and start working with me as time went on? Not so much. He has not offered me any help/insight to improve. I have attended my squad when Piglet Coach is on hols and had a fill in, I've also been down to my tri club's squad - USELESS. A good coach is such a rare find. Uh oh I got a crush on Piglet Johnny. Is this news? not to me might be to him.. |

Jonathan TX, we should probably fill you in that there are many Manatees involved in law enforcement in one way or another. |

Actually, I love running on the track when it's dark. We don't pay for our track time so the stadium lights are off and it is pitch black during our track practices. It's a really interesting sensation. One I have grown to love, maybe out of necessity. I used to often be the first one at the pool in the mornings as a kid I used to love it there is something about swimming in the dark and being the only one making the water move. |

Nice interval session on the bike this morning followed with a 5k brick run. Run after the bike felt really good. I can tell a huge difference in running after my Tri bike vs road bike. Got to the pool for my afternoon workout and swam 100 yards and was kicked out of the pool due to lightning. I didn't even see any lightning or hear any thunder but they said I had to get out and wait for 30 minutes so I left. Why does lightning effect an indoor pool? On a positive note: Even though I only swam 100 yards I focused elbow and hand position and had a much better feel of the water. My slow warmup 100 yard swim was 20 seconds faster than my normal moderate swim. I don't think I was pushing the water back at all before WTF - really. 20 seconds? That is incredible. Great job! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a bad morning, just grumpy miserable - not sad or emotional - that Maca powder really is a wonder drug. I forgot to take it two days in the UK - tears and more tears! Anyway today - been for a run at lunchtime 7km in 49mins, very happy, I've not run over 5km since well back in December. Legs felt good. It all felt good. I love running. |
