Elite 7783 PEI, Canada | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Fred D 3200 YMCA group swim this am for me. Lots of underwater swimming. Swam a total of 16x25 underwater. Supposed to do no breathing, but I needed at least 2-3 breaths per length. There were a few in the lane who could do it.... not me though! I wouldn't be able to do it either, maybe a couple of them. 20 years ago it would have been a piece of cake. I remember doing 100+ yards underwater a few times - in hindsight, it was a pretty dumb thing to do! 6 x 4' @ 295w on the trainer for me this morning. Good fun. |

I'll be part of a delegation (the IT guy) from Veterans Affairs Canada going to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-day in Normandy. Should be an awesome experience but not conducive to getting in 70.3 shape! I'll be limited to running and even that might be a bit iffy - I went on the same trip 5 years ago and worked a lot of long hours. I'm looking forward to it though! |

Can we use fins? If so I might be able to make it halfway. Maybe. And it would have to be on one of Jason's good days. |

Shane has a 'crazy' trainer ride set for me today as well. We wills get if I can get it done properly lol. 3x15' @ 95% today, per Marc and Shane's power mentor group -- I was worried about how it would go, given how badly last Tuesday's threshold ride went after Sunday's long run (and massage), but it turned out to be quite reasonable. Pretty sure the deep tissue massage last weekend screwed my legs over....can't afford to do that again, so I'll be asking for less pressure next time! Short run tonight, probably on the treadmill. I don't know how you guys with actual winter weather deal with it....it's 33F, rainy, and windy. I can't think of many things more miserable than having to go outside today! Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Fred D We do them on occasion. Usually something like 4 to 6. I usually can do the first, but then I need to sneak a breath. Not a big fan of hypoxia sets anyway, and not sure they actually do anything?Yeah, the top 2 fasties in the lane were getting everyone. I would make it halfway and then breath twice and then go right back under. Was really tough, but we didn't do 16 in a row, rather it was 4x25 as part of a revolving set 4 times. Shane has me backwards from you guys. Today is run / swim day. 45' run this morning at a pace I used to able to hold pre foo injury. Feels like my fit was is coming back. 3500ish in the pool tonight |

We have been really lucky with an extremely mild winter here but the last couple of days have been that 45 degrees, pouring and windy.
I did a 10 mile progression run this AM. I consider it a quasi-quality run because I do the first 6 easy Getting a massage today, yessssss Tomorrow will be my last actual quality day before the HM. |

We have been really lucky with an extremely mild winter here but the last couple of days have been that 45 degrees, pouring and windy. I can deal with cold (I'll whine about it, but if it's cold and dry, I'm running outside), but cold and wet is where I draw the line. I could force myself to run in the rain if it were reasonably warm....and if it were like the typical Seattle drizzly type rain. The rain in Houston either comes with cold, windy weather (like today).....or is like a torrential downpour, soak you to the bone in a matter of moments, and 80+ degrees. I lived in Seattle for years and the rain there did not prepare me for summer rain here....it's a whole different beast! |

Expert 1260 Norton Shores, MI | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Main set in the pool today was 10x100 leaving at 1:25 and nailed the set. A big breakthrough for me and made my day. I honestly was just hoping to get through 6 or 7 before re-setting. About 2 months ago I thought that nailing this set leaving at 1:30 was a huge deal. Progress.

We still have 2-feet of snow on the ground. 120-inches total this winter. 2nd highest amount on record. Glad I went with a bike/swim focus!! |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by Fred D 1:40 trainer ride at 240w average. Thought I wasn't going to make the last interval, but somehow convinced my mind that I could. I'm good at lying to myself that way. Seriously, this opens up the discussion (again) of the CENTRAL GOVERNOR theory. Anyone have thoughts on the CG theory? Nope, I had to look it up. Anyway a brief read and I need to read it again to much over my head. From the title I would say when I was younger I could put that to sham. The fastest mile I ran was 4:11:??. Just think if I was properly trained and not stuck in the Army. Today’s workouts were 5 miles in 11 degrees and then a 3800yd swim with the main set 10x50 and 15x100’s

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Arend - as much as I love to train, I'd take that trip in a heartbeat (we're going to Paris with the kids for a week in August and I can't wait to blow up my training for some baguettes, cheese and wine for lunch along the Seine!). I suspect you'll hammer a few segments and get CR's anyway… Ryan - awesome! Good to know it can be done (I'm a ways behind you, but I'm working to get to where you were previously!). Nicely done. James - 4:11? Yowza. Fred, if lying to yourself produces results like that? Well, it might be the one time (other than Santa and the kids) that lying seems OK to me. (not really - it's never a good idea, IMO). As for central governor, I think it is likely a part of the picture. We experience multiple types of fatigue and likely from different causes and "sources" (central vs. peripheral vs. cognitive - others?). You have to roll them all into one experience to get what we feel during exertion, but *I* think we can work on each of them to improve our performance. Increasing peripheral toughness through the right kind of training? Has worked for me. Cognitive toughness through training one's mind to not mind so much? Better work (or all that trainer time will be for naught!). Ever had the experience of thinking you were gassed in a race and something just got to you (a person in the crowd, a thought, a competitor's encouragement - or the converse) and pushed you over the top of what you felt like you could achieve? I bet so. IMO, they all play a role. It's such a subjective thing (can't you almost always go harder than you think you can?), that testing and being able to dissect each component is very difficult. It feels like I've experienced at least these three types of fatigue and have found ways to work on each of them. Just my experience/tuppence, though... Matt |
