Good day, my far flung friends. I hope the coming weekend gives you all the joy you need. And the required healing for those that need it as well. Long work day for me today, sure to be filled with meetings and the ever present finger pointing and work avoidance here in the cube farm. Some days I wonder why I get out of bed  Then I think about how much worse it is for some others, I think about how I can hope to help someone, how much I get from the interactions I enjoy with others, and whatever crud my day has in store for me isn't so bad. Enjoy whatever your day has for you and approach it with a smile. It makes people wonder what you are up to.

Chris, I figured out why I couldn't get splits while out for a run. They are not available on the Strava Bike app. So I downloaded the Strava Run app. We'll see how that goes.

Good to hear. I have both, Run on my iPhone and Bike on my HTC (one is for work, one is mine, don't ask).  I am not sure why they have different apps for each. I am starting to use Strava more for analysis and comparison, since it seems to me that BT is not as strong on the breakdowns and splits. I am not sold on Training Peaks, and I'm really not sold on TP -> BT. It looks like there is some data loss, but I need to review it more side to side to get a better idea. And I still need to figure out my uploading. At this point, I don't know what is feasible to expect. I think this is referred to as a First World Problem

I finally put Run on my phone. Don't know why I had Strava Bike and RunKeeper for so many months. Now that I don't use RunKeeper, I need to uninstall so that it stops telling me I need to get out and exercise.  But I have so many miles logged on the dang thing and I check them for quick comparisons. meh

Thank you for your ponderings.

Gooooooooooo Nooooooo Racing Manatees?!?!?!?!

Since this seems to be a common sentiment, is there something lesser about just going out to enjoy the day? Maybe that's just me not making much of a distinction between races, non-timed events, and big rides or whatever.

Quite right.  It's just that it is a RARE occasion that there are no racing Manatees.  I guess we just love supporting each other in our endeavours.  So, that being said:

Goooooooooooooooooo enjoying the day Manatees!

Until my DH makes medals for our rides, of course it's lesser!

Yep. What she said ^

And, please, I'm open to any cheering you feel like sending my way as I have my 20mi training run (I do use the term loosely) this weekend. I will probably grit it out more than enjoy it...however, I will be quite pleased with getting it done! And even happier if we can take a family hike or ride in our FANTASTIC weekend weather.

Hm, no, but I have something vaguely triathlon-related to share ... (GASP, STOP THE PRESSES ... )

I bought my first pair of lightweight neutral shoes the other day (because they were on sale and under $50, pretty much my only criteria other than "they fit", which is a hard enough one to fulfil, you can relate) ... New Balance 630v2. They weigh less than half of what any of my others do! Also, at the end of a long run when heavy shoes are soaked, they become real clodhoppers.

The lighter, more flexible sole and uppers material also means my giant flipper feet can hang nicely over the sides--truth is no matter how wide the shoe, my feet will do that so it's actually really lovely to have material that doesn't push back at all.

they are cool but what no more running in crocs?

Ugh what a bad start to my Saturday. So just a little bit of background on my week - I have been bad and not gotten all my workouts in. I am short a run and 2 strength training sessions. Not happy with myself at all.

Anyways, I was planning on getting up to go to the gym, getting there right when they opened, because I have a ton of stuff on the calendar today. Was going to get in a brick workout to take care of my missing run and get in one strength training session. Checked the weather for today and we are under travel warning meaning you aren't supposed to be leaving your house unless you are going to work or have an emergency. The wind is blowing so fiercely (way in the negatives wind chill) and the snow that we just got last night (2-4 inches) is drifting really bad on the roads. In some places there have been reports of drifts being 3 feet tall. Because you know, it's been snowing every other day, so there was already snow on the ground before it snowed again last night.

Sooooo....it appears as if I am not going to the gym after all And probably not doing the rest of the stuff I had planned for today either.

I am so OVER this weather! But let this be a lesson learned for me.

I hear you, Ashley, I get frustrated with myself too.  But, as Stacey said, sometimes life happens and we don't get all our workouts in.  Key is to get back at it when you can.  Aaaaaaaand, can you do a bit of a "strength" training in at home?  Core, step ups, arm curls with a jug of milk, burpees.  It always makes me feel a little bit better when I can do that.

The highs today and tomorrow will be fine for January, but forecasts have us entirely sub zero again for a couple days after that. I can't remember it bouncing around quite this much before.

Awe poor manatee! (but funny too...)

The first couple times I watched it, I thought someone got film of me trying flip turns for the first time Thursday.  Yup, that's the wall...

Managed to juuuuust beat the snow for my long run today.  So glad to be outside, even if it's howling and cold - at least I could see pavement!  Yay pavement!  (I think I need a trip south)

At least this afternoon is the pool (indoor) and tomorrow is a couple hours on the basement drainer (inside riding sux, but is a LOT safer with our current weather) and only a short run on the 'mill off the bike.  Or at least that's the plan.

If this screwball weather persists (we're getting the vortex a day after you, Ben), maybe I'll actually figure flip turns out!

Matt

"Best laid plans"...we've all been there. It's okay to not be happy with yourself, just let it make you more determined   We found kettlebells to have at home for those days when life just doesn't want to cooperate. Do you have anything in the house you can use as "weights" ?

Good luck!

I've been working all weekend which was a bit of a challenge with my bad back. Yesterday I had to lie down and stretch every few minutes to prevent the spasms but I got through it.
Today I felt the urge to do a squat and found to my surprise that it helped. After that I did 5 squats every time I felt my back tightening up and I just got better and better as the day went on! Hopefully tomorrow will be even better....

I feel your pain, almost literally. Woke up yesterday with a pinch in my neck. Couldn't turn my head! Did some self trigger point therapy but was still pretty stiff. Went about my errands worrying about the ride scheduled for yesterday and the swim and run scheduled for today. After an Advil, TP therapy, chair massage and DH massage I'm feeling better today. Think I'm ok for swim and run but the ride never happened

Ok, here is my thirty second rant. Yesterday was a disaster. I was out doing errands Saturday morning and apparently ran over some metal with my truck. I put a four inch gash in one of my rear tires. I pulled into a commercial driveway and walked around my truck to see a flat tire. Wow, that sucks. Well what was worse is that it was six degrees with about 15-20MPH wind and I wasn't dressed to be outside for any length of time. The locking mechanism to lower the spare from under the bed of the truck was frozen.  I took forty-five minutes to get the spare down. I was on the phone with my wife talking her out of ordering a tow truck through our roadside assistance. Why might you ask? Because the wait was one hour and twenty minutes. Turns out that would have been the smart play. So, two hours later, with numb feet and hands I was on my way with my spare on and flat in the back. I have to run at least two tire with the same tread depth so today I am shopping for a) one new tire (keep the spare on and replace one of the other four), b) buy two new tires, or c) buy four new tires which will run me about $1,100. Nice.

Ok, rant over. I need to move on; but i am tired of this winter, hate car repairs and maintenance and the time I'll waste shopping for a decent deal on tires. Hope everyone else had a decent day.
