This is a great article about Rudy Garcia the double amputee that finished IM Arizona.http://ironman.com/columns/gruenfeld/lee-gruenfeld-recaps-rudy-garcia-tolsons-amazing-ironman

And Suzy...I got something going on now with what I think is my 4th Metatarsal.  It doesn't hurt, but, the other day it felt like something was in my shoe.  It is some type of sensation right on top of my left 4th metatarsal bone.  Almost feels like a little popping going on.  I ran on it yesterday and didn't notice it hurting at all, but when walking barefooted, I can feel it.  I guess if it doesn't hurt it should be ok to keep going?   Heck, I am hoping the rest for the ITB is coming to an end and now something else wants to go wrong.

Thanks for all the great advice.  I have never really done much as far as endurance running.  I was a running back when I played football, so my focus was sprinting, I never had to running more then 40 yards at a time.  A few years ago I bought a Klein road bike, but have never really train with it, my longest ride was 75 miles. I went for one ride last year and did 50 miles off the couch.  As for the swim I know how to swim well enough to have fun with my kids at the pool.

I hope that gives some kind of back ground.

hey ben.  i don't think you'll have any problems following one the plans here on BT to bust out a some races this year and see improvement in your times with each new race.  i also think a goal of an OLY to wrap the season up is an awesome idea.  now, looking at your logs, you're gonna want to do something about hitting the water.

when is the first race you are eyeing?

Ben, I did several sprints and topped it off with an oly this year...  YOu will not have any problems.  Get an instructor or someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to swim correctly... that alone will make the tri experience more enjoyable...

For accomplishments....If I can speeze in a run of 57 miles over the next 3 days, I can hit 1000 kms for the year.

Not alot for your crazy runner types. But for a boy like me, who prior to Oct 2008 had NEVER run even 1km -that is by far my biggest accomplishment.

I think I'll try one in May, I have about five or six that I'm trying to decide between, I've been sitting here all morning with my credit card in hand trying to map out the year.

I start swimming with a coach in Jan, she is my daughter swim coach so she and my 9 year old can teach me a thing or two.  It will be fun to train with my daughter.

As far as sprints go is it reasonable to do one every other month or is that to much?

Loved the bike story, been there done that.

Ben I did one about every month this summer - sometimes two - no worries there...

Holy Moses it is been busy here!  I hope that everyone is having an enjoyable little vaca?  Some still going into this week!?!?

I can say that I probably had one of the best Xmas EVER!  It was just great to be w/ family for 5 straight days.  We had great weather, good food, great wine, lot's of laugh's, etc...

It appears that most of you didn't skip a beat in training.  Kudo's to you!  I skipped it all!  I think that I am going to have to be one of those that jumps back into if on Jan 4th (I am off to Lake Chelan until then, starting Weds.)

As for my "accomplishments" this year.... I am pretty pleased with my workouts.  I have 5 more miles to hit 1k miles running, and 70 more miles for 2600 on the bike.  The running- No problem.  The biking- Not going to happen (my folks fly out tomorrow, so I have the night with them tonight!).

SSMinnow and Suzy:

Thanks so much about advice re the HRM.  I really really regret not getting the 305 while it was on sale at Amazon for 137.  Pooh.

There is a half ironman triathlete at my gym who lives and dies by the 405.  Would you buy refurbished?

Amazon has refurbished for ~235.00.

Hmm....

So much to consider.

Thanks.  I need to catch up with this thread.  You all are sooo social (which is a great thing!)  :-D

When I first started having a problem with my foot, it was a little something on the bottom.  Kind of annoying, but it went away during warm up so no big deal.   Funny, but at the time I was more worried about my rehabbing IT band on the other side.  Flash forward a couple of weeks and it hurt a little more.  Again, I didn't about it much.  Then I did the half marathon where it hurt for 10 miles and BAM, stress fracture.

The fact that it hurts walking without shoes is not a good sign. I would completely shut down running.  You might be at a stress reaction stage, right before the fracture and if you rest now you won't be going through EIGHT FRICKIN WEEKS OF NO RUNNING AT ALL!.

How long has it been an issue? a few days or weeks? You can get an xray, but it will only show up if the bone has started to heal.  Mine was clean, but I got it too early so it looked like nothing.  Only the bone scan showed it (an MRI would too). Ask the guy who gave you the cortisone shot about it....don't wait.  In fact, during this time why don't you figure out the root cause of your IT Band.  Those don't just get better with time.  They start for a reason.  You need muscle balance improvement somewhere in that bod of yours!

One last thing, most stress fractures present themselves on the top of the foot, not the bottom like mine so don;t think you are in the clear.  And if you think I am being a total pain in the butt, at least wear hard soled shoe and don't walk around barefoot.  That is part of my rehab protcol.

Suzy

I personally would stay away from the 405.  You can still get a 305 cheaper than the refurbished price of the 405.

Have my V02 Max test for bike tomorrow.

Coach said bring my bike, he'll supply the Computrainer and the pain...

Should be fun.

Hey You....

SSMinnow and Suzy are on the same!  I respond to either quite well.

No, I would not buy refurbished, but that is just me.  I want a new something everytime.  If I were you, I would google it and search out a lot of other websites.  A month ago, I bought a friend of mine one from Costco or $149 with free shipping.  The deals are definitely out there because it is the old model.

and we're back... Just went out shopping to see what I could find in the way of tri gear. Came home with 2 new shirts 1  pair shorts and swim trunks. I was going to get new shoes too but I thought I should ease my wife into the new year of triathlon expenses.

Yesterday I watched the Kona Ironman show. It was great to see it again after all the editing. By the end of the show I had tears in my eyes just watching some of the people struggling to reach the finish line. Some made it and some didn't. It was so emotional to see those that didn't quite make it to the cut off times. The announcers at one point said that if you don't make it to the finish line it doesn't count. This is obviously from someone who has never done this or anything even remotely like it.  It doesn't matter that you didn't finish in the allotted time. Just that you finish or even gave it your best.  As Tracy would say "give me the courage to get to the start line".

x3 on this one.  I've had a 305 for a year now and would not trade it for a new 405.

I need some advice here.  I'm trying to decide between two tri's this season.  Unfortunately, so far, this will be my "long" tri before IMKY.  Here are the two to choose from:

http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1438

or

http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1439

I did the second one (Langley) last year.  Unfortunately it does not work as well with my work schedule, but since I make my work schedule, I could make it work if I had to.  It would be a little tougher on my employees.  I'm up in the air.  Here is a little of my reasoning:

Paris Mountain-
1.  It is hard!
2.  Short swim, but I don't need to work on my swim as much as the bike and run
3.  The distances are a little shorter, but similar to Langley, but sounds like a hard tough terrain
4.  Works better with my work schedule

Langley-
1.  Longer distances
2.  Did it last year so I can compare
3.  Fun course

Is is Langley or Paris????

Paris.  You might need those employees to cover you later on down the road for a long ride or swim.  don't trade that up for a second tier race.  And it looks like a tougher course, like you suggest the only significant difference is the swim.

Gotta go with John on this one...  Don't cash in all your chips for Langley...

Not a new years resolution, but is anyone planning on doing anything different or having a new focus for 2010?

I'll be getting a tri coach and I'm going to start logging my mileage as well as my time (only did time this year).
I am going to try to eat cleaner and log my food intake.
I'm also tinkering with the idea of trying to get to 100 lbs lost (I think I'm halfway there now) by April 12 which is the 1 year anniversary of me getting off the couch in 2009 but it may be more than I can handle by that date but if I can do it by June 12 that is a more likely scenario.

How about you guys?

Hey Chris

Which one would better prepare you for your IM? Matches the terrain most closely? Personally, I would go for the one  that fits in your training calendar the best, works on the disciplines you need to hone and mimics the terrain.

Gotta go with Suzy on this one...but if I had to make a recommendation I would go with Langley.  Not being a contrarian but my thoughts are...

Langley-
1.  Longer distances - This more closely resembles your "A" race.
2.  Did it last year so I can compare - Let's you gage your fitness from last year towards this year.
3.  Fun course - Hey...It's a "B" race and a training day so it should be fun.

I have been to Paris Mountain and there is nothing flat in that area except for the kitchen floor.  That means to me a greater chance of injury.  Granted, you are not going to race it all out but a very hilly/hard course had more inherent pitfalls than something like Langley that you already know.

Just my .02 worth is I had to recommend one over the other.

You are going to do fine and get some benefit out of either and your employees are either going to be on board or not...besides, I suspect they are going to ask for a favor or 8 during the year and are not going to give much thought as to how it affects you....If not...then you have some special people working for you.

Man, I can't keep up, the holiday put me a few pages behind.  So I went to my parents for X-mas and now I feel like crap because of my dog/cat allergies.  Hopefully i'll clear up in a few days.

Today...45 mins of running in a cold windy 30 degrees, and 30 mins on the trainer.  Did I mention I am bored out of my mind on the trainer?  I actually feel dumber for sitting there....

I hope you all had a great Christmas, and are putting your new toys to good use.  Thank you all for the inspires, and kind words, they really help keep me motivated on days im feeling under the weather.

I had to play catch up so here goes:

Reindeer bait ~ We use oatmeal, glitter and colored sugar and sprinkle it on the lawn while saying this poem... "Sprinkled on the lawn at night; The moon will make it sparkle bright.  As Santa's reindeer fly and roam; This will guide them to our home."  Luckily, the birds eat the edible stuff plus my daughter is too young to really think twice about it if it were still there.  I guess I would have to go with the ole "reindeer eat a lot during their journey" story when she gets old enough to actually question it!
Garmin ~ I LOVE my 305!  While I personally would not wear it as an everyday watch, it does have a clock on it.  Plus, I bought the velcro quick release strap and have never had a problem wearing it even though I can't stand to wear a watch!

Christmas ~ Can I just say my hubby rocks??  He bought me a trainer and a gift certificate to the (swimming) stroke clinic I've been mentioning (hinting) for months!  As for my daughter...all I can say is that kids totally make Christmas soooo much more special!!!!

Now, without going into a total babblethon (which I often find myself doing) I am in desperate need of some motivation!!!  Running is normally my happy place but I'm even having a hard time forcing myself out the door to do that.  Any suggestions on how to pull myself out of this funk I've found myself in??  I'm currently training for an 8 mile race (I want to beat last years time) in Feb and will start my HIM training towards the end of Jan but right now I don't even want to look at my running shoes...or bike....or goggles....do you see my dilemna?!

Wowsers I'm behind. I skimmed through some of the posts and all I could concentrate on was beer ice cream. I think it's the result of being a food bum the last few days. I think I ate and drank half my weight. Anyways on the important note, I have had beer ice cream. On my honeymoon driving down the pacific coast my wife and I stopped at an amazing cafe that served ice cream made of Rogue beer. It was great (those who haven't had Rogue beer, try it, it's great).Had a good holiday with the family. I'm picking-up my Computrainer this weekend, I can't wait. I really need to work-off the holiday 15.

Well if you want to be a "good mom" you will get out and run!  Remember (for us men): A happy wife is a happy life!

If momma ain't motivated--- NOBODY is motivated!  No get out there and run!  Even if for 20-30 minutes.  Get the blood going!
