Originally posted by drfoodlove I think we are in the middle of a two week challenge, but I've lost track. I've lost track of many things besides just where we are in the challenge cycle, one of the biggest being my motivation. Since my Turkey Trot I've really lost a lot of motivation, and should you look at my embarrassing logs, you will see I have only done one workout since Thanksgiving. Thus, starting today--I'm challenging myself to some form of workout every single day until Christmas! S/B/R preferably, but yoga for the scheduled off day on my plan. I did this in both September and October, and it was great. November's goal was to follow my training plan exactly, including rest days--I failed miserably. I think my mojo disappears with rest days, so I'm getting rid of them (carefully). Today, the plan is to squeeze a swim in between meetings and administering a final. I will report later to keep myself accountable. BTW...way to go ElPenguino!! You are rocking the consistency, and I'm totally jealous--but inspired too!

Sounds like you've got a good plan Gretchen.  I think motivation is very hard this time of year--everyone is so busy, and the weather provides real challenges to those of us up north.  Take it one day at a time.  Maybe we should ask you to post your day's workouts here?  Would that help?

--

And, yes, Nancy!  Awesome stuff you're cranking out

Being accountable helps me! Making, proctoring, and grading my final took 13 hours today. By the time I was finished the pool was closed, but I did get some yoga in, so I'm feeling better. Tomorrow is a no final day, so hoping for bike in the morning and pool in the afternoon.

19 miles on a treadmill?? Ugh...that just sounds terrible, but awesome job getting it done!!

It was wet and cold here all weekend, but I needed to get my long run in.  I didn't think running outside was the best idea due to my recovering cold.

Thus, I decided to run my 19 mile run on the treadmill.  It was mentally challenging towards the end, but I got it in.  I have a half marathon scheduled this week.

That just sounds awful.

Whoa, that's some serious mental toughness! My biggest run challenge this weekend was a wrong turn on the trail that turned a 6 mile loop into 7.5. I should probably feel bad now about the grumbling that I did for that last mile and a half.  My trail navi skills (or lack thereof) can get added to the list of weaknesses.

That is very impressive.  19 on the dreadmill deserves a medal, or a pie, or something.

Are you over your cold/sickness thing?

I did a 2hr trainer ride the day before as well.  I felt like Andy Potts!

I think I am as far as the sickness.  I have a few lingering symptoms, but I'll be adding some quality this week to wake the body up before race day.

Nice going! Have actually done a run like that on the treadmill once. Finding the right entertainment helped, the gym had several TVs hanging in easy view. Enough interest to keep the mind engaged, but not so much that I'd pick up the pace or have ups & downs. Treadmills also stopped at 1 hr, so refilled the water bottle at this time. They were also up on a balcony and overlooked the entire weight machine area, so lots of people watching opportunities. Also had more experience most before that with the mental part with all the trainer/stationary biking. Did you have anything like this to help with that?

I got my MRI results back yesterday, and they were negative.  There's evidence of an old ligament injury, but nothing else.  Yay!

I'm leaving in a few days, and have really dialed back my training and intensity which I am going to keep very low while I'm traveling as well.  My goal is to get rested--physically and mentally--and get this leg healed for good.  Really looking forward to get healthy and coming back with a plan and some control.

Been tapering this week. Probably the hardest part is resisting the bag of candy cane/white chocolate hershey kisses from our holiday party now that I don't have the running volume to burn it all off. OK, ok I confess. I haven't been resisting much...

It's a little early to tell but it looks like a warm front is moving in to Bend so we'll get a true to XC-mud bath of a race vs a frozen tundra (it's been about 10 degrees all week) Either way is fine with me, so long as the wind stays away!

I made the "A' team as an alternate and barring no major disaster I will run with the "B" team for the race. I am really happy about this position coming in. It means they pay for all my expenses AND I'll likely get to score for the team (there would be no chance in hell of me scoring with the A team as the talent gap is just a little much for me right now.

We leave on Thursday.

Other good news is that I get to room with our best marathoner (olympic trials qualifier)  so I can pick her brain a little. OH and I get to toe the line with Lauren Fleshman!

Wait, so is this a good thing?  Not to be a Debbie Downer over here, but does your doctor have any explanation as to why you're having pain?  Are you still having pain?  What's the plan if you rest for a while and then come back to having the same issues?

Last you mentioned, you'd been running with minimal / no pain....maybe that's the case still (I hope so!).  I just get concerned when things look good (on MRI's, x-rays, scopes, etc) and doctors have no explanation or treatment plan for whatever it is that's causing the pain....coming from a point of too much experience with this very thing.

But I'm hopeful that the negative MRI simply means that it's healed and that you're on your way to pain-free running!

Debbie, I mean Nicole,
the MRI definitively rules out the dreaded 'stress fracture'....and proves old injury, which may be causing the pain and she will have to be CAREFUL (yes, that's to you Elesa) with ramping up volume and intensity...

always disappointing to not know an exact cause, but ruling out bad things is my day job, so on this I can comment

(and I still need to work on my humor, I know, I know...)

you are in an enviable spot this time around-observe, ask a lot of questions and enjoy the heck out of it
(we expect/hope to see some pics--muddy slop sounds like a lot more fun than frozen tundra---tough, tough course, BTW)

Quite a phenomenal first year on XC for you. Well done.

I wish I had brought headphones, so instead I was scanning at a few TV's periodically.  Our treadmills cut off after each hour too, so I did get some quick breaks in.  For the TV's I was balancing between NFL games, some infomercial for a coffee device, and Naked and Afraid, which looks like an absolute train wreck.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words re the MRI.

I TOTALLY know what you mean Nicole. I wish I had something to hang my hat on with this injury.  That part certainly is frustrating.  My doc and I discussed some options and we have decided that I will rest during my trip and do lots of rolling, massage, etc.  When I get back we're going to reevaluate and see if I should do PT, consider an injection (guided by ultrasound), both or neither.  A few weeks ago I had been looking at my trip as an opportunity to get some really good base miles in (summer down there), but  now I'm just going to majorly chill and try to come back healthy and rested.

I have PMed with Adrienne about this at length, and I think I really have been underestimating the additional strain I have been putting on with my increased bike and swim.  Dale, you warned me about this (no hard workouts) but it didn't really register.  I thought I could go hard in swimming and biking because that wasn't what had hurt me, but the overall stress has still impaired my ability to fully recover and has made me more susceptible to reinjury and has most certainly slowed the process down.

I had been running pain free and then my leg started hurting on the bike.  Grrrr...I think it may, in fact, be the bike that is causing/exacerbating the problem.  I am going to get a really good fit when I get back--still trying to figure out who's going to do it.  If anybody has any recommendations of anyone within a 10 hour drive of Iowa, I'm open to suggestions.

Just submitted final grades for one class. Tomorrow begins a new cycle of grading--take home finals this time, but there are far fewer students in this class.
