Originally posted by SteveyD Well, finally got back on track again after the 3 peaks weekend. We managed to raise a nice £2275 (just shy of $4k) for the local Childrens Hospices. Out of the 20 walkers, 9 completed all 3 within 24 hours, 2 fell outside 24 hours and the rest either managed 1 or 2 mountains. It was very eventful, and sleep deprived driving was "interesting" , but all done, no one injured/died/etc so its all good! Thanks for the inspires guys In Other news, several of the walkers from the 3 peaks are deciding to do a 50 mile bike ride from London to Cambridge as a follow up.... and trying to get me involved. I've done it before (3h59) but I was actually fit then ... gives me a goal to work for but it is only 6 weeks away. Should I do it?

DOOO EEET!

you must be new here if you even asked!

Seriously, if you've done it before, you must have a bike, right?  And do you want to do the ride? If you got on the bike today, how far could you ride it?  How many days per week could you ride?

haha
Touché
I am almost certain I could complete it but it may take me 8 hours at the moment....
I reckon if I just got out on my bike and went a steady pace, i'd be able to do 15-18 miles at a sensible pace on the flat. (London to CBG is very hilly)
As for how often could I train? Tricky one. I _could_ train at lunchtimes, but would make my life unbearable thanks to the "lovely people" i work with.
I could probably do 2/3 rides a week in evenings - between Football monday, cricket tuesday, thursday saturday and wednesday band rehearsals...

Do I want to? Yes and no. I dont like failing, but I know I need to get fitter again...

Have I said I HATE heat?!?!? One of the A/C units in my sleeping quarters broke. It was 98* F and 45% humidity when I woke up at 4pm. When I came into work today it was 110*F and 40% humidity at 5pm. Can I return to the states?

Hope everyone training is going well, mine is suffering a little from heat and trying to stay hydrated.

I ran a 21:36.  Good enough for 6th place overall, and 1st place in the 30-39 age group!  I was so pumped to place that high!  When they were handing out the age group awards I thought maybe I'd get 3rd.  When they called 2nd and 3rd, and it wasn't me, I was bummed.  I was really surprised to take 1st!

It's also technically a PR.  So it was a great day all in all.  Finished the race and then rolled out with some friends for a 20 mi bike ride.

YAY FOXY!!!  Congrats on OA #6, AG #1 and the PR!!!  So proud of you!!

Holy crap, this is getting to be just a tad ridiculous - but I want Jonathan to know that I did mention him in my conversation with the attorney today when we were chatting about IMTX!

Wow, that's a lot of interviews!!  But, although they are beginning to feel excessive, it must mean they want you and like you.

I'm sure you've already considered all these questions, but figured it wouldn't hurt to put 'em out there:

  1. Which would feel worse, finishing the ride slower and more uncomfortably than you'd like, or not doing the ride at all?
  2. Could you possibly do another event that would give you more time to prepare?
  3. If you did have longer to prepare, would you commit to doing the event, or put it off until the last minute?

Sure you can come back, just don't come to my part of PA this week. Currently it is 82 with 70% humidity and is supposed to get into the 90s with continued high humidity.  I know that's a far cry from 110 but the humidity makes it a bit icky.

Please stay cool and hydrated!!

Was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how things were going.  This sounds hideous!!  And I was just thinking I'd switch my run and swim today because it's supposed to be in the 90's.  I obviously need to HTFU!

Already committed to another event later in year (september) and training, although almost exclusively walking/jogging and swimming for it at the moment because I can do that at lunch times at work with no hassle.
I dont ever leave anything to the last minute! (which is generally a flaw of mine...)
The first question is the killer.
It doesn't really strike me as a something i'm particularly bothered about - it would be nice but would prefer to do it next year with a full team of work colleagues. I'll have a think tonight whilst I go out for a ride!

Slightly Jealous - its not getting above 20 C (about 80 F) here and its the middle of summer...

Keep hydrated!

I need some bike advice.  Does anyone have any tri bike models to recommend for $1.5-$2k?  The local tri shop stocks a few brands such as Giant, but I'm wondering if I could find something pretty decent on eBay.  I'm just not sure what to look for.

I think I'd like to keep my road bike around for centuries and other group ride scenarios.

If everything works out and you get there in time then Austin's Texas Longhorn 70.3 would be a great way to get settled into Texas

It's not my favorite race but it's still an Ironman 70.3 and alot of fun. And it's in October so it's not hot. I think it only got up to 85 last year

Honestly if your going to spend that money it's worth it to go get fit. Tri bikes are such more sensitive to fit than a road bike.

The local tri shop does a good job of doing fits.  So get a fit before beginning a bike search?

Yes. Different brands fit different. I good fitter will recommend a bike size and give you a list of brands that will fit you best. It's best to go to a fitter that has an actual fit bike like Retul.

It's not entirely finished as I haven't been able to upload any pics yet... but it's there, and (as usual) it's long and rambling - most likely due to my blondness.

Beat me to it!

Despite coming off of the first winter I can remember when the cold actually got to me (I can run in the double digit below zero zone for only SO many days in a row), I'm more than a little nervous about the 8 months of summer in Austin, as my thermostat is genetically very northern European (75 or so is my preferred upper limit!).  That said, one can adapt to anything.  <keeps repeating to self>

Austin is happening for us (should be tied up in the next day or so, but looks pretty certain), so I sure hope so!  Mon - I really hope you beat me there!  Is this next interview the last one?  I won't tell you how many it took me (I'll just say, "Not fewer than 7").

FastFox (ponder no more), nice race!  x2 on getting a fit first.  I bought a used Cervelo P2C in that same range, but I dropped some coin on a couple fit sessions to figure which bikes (there were a couple that fit my simian body habitus - there's a reason, or two…, that my rugby nickname was Primate) to target on the used market.  Great approach, if you can make it work - I'm very happy with the outcome (hey, the bike - and wheels - were "new to me!").

As for throwing out bags of candy, that just doesn't register (even to a guy who is cleaning house with a cold hearted efficiency at the moment!).

Matt

You will just have to get used to running before the sun comes up.  That's standard practice in Florida.  Even then, the humidity is killer, but you do adapt.

Wait, who threw out bags of candy?  I must have blocked that post as too traumatic !

Holy dayum.

For those of you playing at home, I now have interview number SEVEN set up for Wednesday morning.  That's right, folks... Interview.Number.SEVEN.

And they have some testing that they want me to do before then, so... that's fun.

Holy crap, this is getting to be just a tad ridiculous - but I want Jonathan to know that I did mention him in my conversation with the attorney today when we were chatting about IMTX!

If everything works out and you get there in time then Austin's Texas Longhorn 70.3 would be a great way to get settled into Texas It's not my favorite race but it's still an Ironman 70.3 and alot of fun. And it's in October so it's not hot. I think it only got up to 85 last year

Obviously "hot" is a relative term...

Beat me to it!

Here's what Erin said, "I was in a toss and organize mood today. Just threw out a grocery bag full of candy...collected from the holidays and birthdays over the last 18+ months. Funny thing, there was nary a piece of chocolate to be found. Hmmm..."  Surely it's not safe to just throw candy away, like throwing out expired medications.  Imagine the damage to the environment....

Matt, sooo great that the Austin thing is coming together!  What IS it with all the interviews???

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
