X3 - I raced an early season half ironman with boots - I will never race with them again.

That is interesting feedback on the booties as I hadn't really heard that before. I had thought that might be possible but a friend swims in them with success so I bought a pair just in case water stayed frigid. I swam about a mile in them the other day & didn't notice any ballooning but I have a pretty weak kick anyway. Mine fit pretty tight around my feet & ankles and then go under my wetsuit. I'll try them again in CdA and will try without them as well. If my feet can stand water temp, I'll go without but I would like to feel my feet when I hit the bike.

Anybody swim in the booties with success?

Latest water temp?

Another strange question newbie question: When we come out of water for 1st loop, is there a water stand? If so, I might slam a gel.

Latest water temp is swimable.  I swam for almost an hour on Saturday morning in my sleeveless with no thermo cap or boots.  The first few minutes were cold but after that it was fine.  Last night the news reported 55 but that seems low to me.  I pack a little more natural insulation under my wetsuit than your typical IM athlete so take that into account.  I plan to swim again tonight, I'll let everyone know if the water temp feel colder than last weekend.

Water station after the 1st loop of the swim?  I think that there is one but I have never used it.  Generally I have drank enough lake water from the washing machine start that I have no need to add any more to the mix.

Has anyone found a signup for athlete tracking?  I have friends asking for this, but I can't seem to locate it.

You can use the IM system which is very slow to update or rent a device from

http://www.myathletegps.com/  I have rented from them 3 times and it works great.  Family/friends can get updates every 30 seconds on your speed and progress.  (They did say there may be alittle dead area in Idaho due to bad cell phone reception.) My wife will not allow me to do a IM without one as she know exactly when I will be coming to each spot.

I grew up a swimmer and can't even begin to imagine how annoying those booties would be.  ~60 degrees in a wetsuit is no problemo (and I hate being cold in the water!).  I've been swimming in ~60 degree water a few times this year and I am really not concerned a bit.  Once the blood is pumping, it's fine.

Much more concerned about standing around waiting for the start.  How close are the trash cans?  I'm hoping to start from the front.  If I take my socks off at, say 6:50, and walk to the can to throw them away will I for sure get back to the front before the gun goes off?  I've been told that getting through this particular crowd can be a challenge.  Would that go for the front as well?

Looking forward to seeing y'all and CdA!  Loading the car tomorrow.

Getting onto the beach is where the problems moving through the crowd occur. Once you get onto the beach I felt like I could move around just fine.

Ditto.  I swim all winter in open water here in Socal/Los Angeles area, with water temps getting down into the low 50s at times and never have a problem with the feet or hands after about 3 mins in the water.  Anything over 58F is downright comfy.

And correct, the standing around in the cold sand is what can nuke the circulation in the feet, so if anything, I'd say go for the cheap socks while waiting, and then ditch em' just before its show time.  You'll be so amped up on adrenaline and surviving the first 400m of the swim that the temp of your feet will be the last thing you'll be thinking about...

I have swam from Alcatraz with booties on a few times.  Never had a problem with the booties.  I tuck them under the wetsuit leg, and they've never filled with water or come loose.

That said, I am planning on a sleeveless wetsuit with no booties or neaprene cap for CdA.  But I'm also bringing a full suit just in case it's effing cold.

That thing looks cool.  Do you know if they'll be in CdA, as it's too late to have it shipped now?  Any idea how much it costs to buy?  I think wife would like that as she worries when I'm doing long rides alone.  This way she would know where to send the search crews.

Just posing a question??  Is anyone still feeling a little lethargic from the taper??  I do feel better than yesterday, I think due to a deep tissue massage.....  Starting to get a little nervous about this going away by Sunday, I know the sluggishness is normal but I think at my last IM I felt good at this point....

Are you guys all feeling great right now and ready to race... or still healing in the taper?

Felt okay Monday, wouldn't say energized.  Had a crappy bike this morning.  Might have caught a slight cold from the fam, but they seem to have gotten over theirs quickly.

I guessing it may come down to the wire before really feeling "ready".

Off for a massage this afternoon as well.  Hope that does something.

Don't worry, when the gun goes off on Sunday that feeling will go away.

Until then I'll be ridding a wave of feeling great for a while, then feeling like crap, then back to feeling great.  It's just all part of the taper madness fun.

Yea, I know the taper is different for all, but for what I can seem to remember in 2008 I thought I felt great the whole last week leading up to the race....  Of course I turn 40 this year, so my memory of 2008 is probably a little shaky.....   I am not freaking yet, still have 4 days and a wake up to turn this around....   I do feel I could do the race still, but just want to feel 100% on race day not 75%....

Is the bike course marked on Sat? If so - how (on the road with paint, road signs etc).  Also will the run course still be marked on monday?  Thanks for your reply in advance.

Yes, the bike course has been marked for several weeks now.  (Orange paint or tape arrows at corners).

The run course turn around points are marked with a "x" and are visible year round (execpt in the snow).  I'm not sure about the run turns marks but they should still be visible on Monday.

They will fedex it to your hotel, mine will be there Thursday. I think the cost is $20 for unit then $20 to ship fed ex(they give you a prepaid envelope to put it in after race. They are not for sale at this time only rental units

Gatorade is no longer hosting the pre-event swims ... there is an unofficial BT gathering at The Moose on Friday morning. see: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=213840&posts=15&start=1 for more details.

I used booties 2 years ago @ CDA when the water temps were about 59 degrees. Mine are close fitting; I tucked the tops under the legs of my wetsuit and had no issues with them filling up with water. They kept my feet warm; only my hands and face got cold.

Good luck and everyone have a great race!

Swam 35 minutes in the lake this morning.  Just two words for all of you:  No worries!

A little chilly right at first but after a couple minutes it was fine.  And there are 3 more days of warm weather to make it even better by race day.

Everyone travel safely and enjoy CDA while you're here!

A good example of how you can't do anything to help you on race day now ... but there is plenty you can do to goof it up between now and then!

Safe travels to CdA.
