I'm in a mandatory evacuation zone.  Less than a mile from long island sound.  We are up about 30ft above sea level where my house is so should be ok (knock on wood).  Down the street and areas around me were trashed by Irene and a lot of it just got fixed.  They are saying the storm surge at high tide today will be as high as Irene, but the one tonight will be much higher and that will be the one that really does a lot of damage...worst in a long long time since probably 1938.

Re: Weight.  Don't get me started.  I'm the most I've been in awhile.  I'm telling myself it is like weight training and when I take it off I"ll be way faster.  5'9" and 190lbs as of this AM.  I should probably be slower for how much I weigh.  Now is the time though as mentioned.  Not during peak training.  I'm annoyed with myself because at one point early summer I was teetering on being <180, on my way to 170 and then a bunch of stuff just led to stress eating or not caring or something.  Now I have an extra 10 to lose.

Stay safe. I don't miss the hurricanes. We were stationed in SC and VA and were evacuated several times.

Re: weight. It's tough because a lot of coaches/articles say to put on a few lbs in the winter and not stay at race weight, but then the window to lose those few lbs is pretty small if you have to lose it before the season training starts. I guess the best scenario is that it takes care of itself once the training volume increases, but it doesn't happen that way for everyone.

Oh, and I am so excited for my BFF who raced Xterra worlds yesterday, she finished 3rd in her AG. Podium!!!

We're at the tail end of the storm (or will be in a few hours). They just announced an early release for the schools. We live about 2 miles inland from the coast - and folks are worried about the high tide potential damage.

Yeah, weight loss. I get so frustrated because if I don't worry about what I eat, eat when I'm hungry and eat fairly clean - I hold pretty steady at 156. If I work really hard and eat hyper-clean (very close to Paleo), I hold pretty steady at 155. That pound isn't going to get me much speed (and if I get below 154, I start getting numbness in my feet on the bike). I'd love to lose more, but don't know if I have the gumption. That being said - I crept up a bit after my last race (sloppy eating, a vacation trip) and am now moving back down to my set point.

Question for the BQ-types: what kind of mileage were/are you putting in?  Definitely not for me, but a buddy of mine just sent me his 21 week BQ attempt plan prepared by a coach.  Buddy is right at 20:00 for a 5k and a lifelong runner.  Plan is mainly 35 mpw (give or take) and peaks with a few 45mpw.  That seemed really low to me.  Big speed session once a week.  I thought is would be in the 60-80mpw.  He is shooting for 3:05 on a flat/coastal course.  Am I off base?

(Caveat:  I've run only one open marathon, a few years ago, and I did BQ, but it was on the old standards.  I am probably in right around 3:00 shape right now, based on training and recent races.)

Some guys could of course easily go sub-3 on 35-45mpw.  On the other hand, 3:05 for a 20:00 5K guy is a big ask, IMHO.  In other words, he needs both to gain some speed and to extend it to 26.2.  Without knowing anything else, I'd guess (and of course I'm mostly guessing) that 35-45mpw isn't going to do both of those things.  But I hope I'm wrong!

Thanks.  Turns out he's faster than I thought.  5K PR is 18:09 and looking to run 17:40 this weekend after losing about ten pounds since last PR.

That changes a lot.  I think he can do it.  I'd still run more volume than that, though.

Yeah, looks like the East really took a beating.  I suspect Kim is without power for sure.  Her state took it hard and she typically loses power during the big storms.  Never move to her hood cause it takes forever to get it back.

You must be getting some of the residual affect of it right?  Looks like it is moving north right now

It seems like Ontario and Quebec will get hit worse than Atlantic Canada. We are expecting some rain and wind but nothing crazy.

West side of MI - getting high winds (30-40mph) and rain now - expecting 30 foot waves in the middle of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron today which is insane.  Obviously not the destruction of the East Coast...hope everyone is OK!

Kim is without power. She charged all her tech devices before the outage so she might pop around. Stay safe Easterners!

Good to hear some chatter...I was beginning to think that everyone was without power...or worse.

30 foot waves in a lake...wow.  Stay safe everyone.

I am hoping for 2 feet of snow to be dumped on Neil because he was bragging about sunshine in ontario the day we had ice on the roads in Quebec

So far, just a bit of wind, some rain but nothing major. Montreal will probably be spared.

Fred D - 2012-10-30 10:10 AM Still keeping at the 3-2-1 running. Unfortunately work is busy and I still feel extremely run down and fatigued so not much else happening for training. Anyone else training today?

Was going well, but on my Sunday long run had a little flare of tendonitis on top of my foot when I flex the big toe.  Did my easy run yesterday on a hotel treadmill and the pain never really went away, and I altered my stride a bit, so now I am feeling it in the opposite knee.   Long winded way of saying I have to take a short break from BarryP

Will swim at masters tonight.

I was on the trainer at 5:30 this morning.  Did a 5' power test @ 291w.  That's 14 watts lower than when I last tested in March but about 20w higher than this time last year.

Going to go for an easy 35 min run after work.

Ha - yeah it got windy and wet here, but that was it.  he weather has kept me indoors for the past few days and for the first time in the longest time I stepped onto the treadmill at lunch and ran for 30min.

Also took my road bike to the LBS and they confirmed the frame is cracked.  They took some pics and will email Trek.  I'll wait to see what happens.

Brutal Computrainer class today.  After a w/u and 5 and 6 min. barely sub-threshold sets, the main set was 8x1 minute spikes to 180% with the bottom of each spike at about 80%.  I blew up after the fourth and had to back off about 30W.  Somewhat recovered for the last few hard intervals of the session, but that was ugly.

Couple of questions.

1)  BarryP plan.  How much biking do you think one can get away with while following this plan?

2)  To Fred's comment about slowing a bit with age.  Anybody here, apart from Chris and his great results, getting faster as they age?

Bummer on the frame Neil.  Any idea how it got cracked?

I got an early morning run it.  Looks like that might be it for me for the day as I wait on a server build so I can do a DR drill.  What is funny is that my client is on the west coast but we are doing disaster recovery in the East.  Guess the center must be in an ok spot though since it is up during the storm.  lol  Looking like it will be a long work day
