Sorry you didn't get to race. First, thanks everyone again for the thoughts and prayers. It means a lot. Second, despite temps in the 20s with winds in the 30mph range and gusts in the 40s and 50s, we raced because we needed it and wanted normal. It was so cold! About mile 1.5 we had to run through an underpass and there was about 4" of water. Our feet got soaked and after that my feet were so frozen and felt like I had cement shoes on. First 3.1 miles were uphill. As I neared the turnaround, I started hearing people complain about the wind. I asked myself, "what wind?" Then I hit the turnaround and it was all wind, all the time for 3.1 freezing miles. I had snotcicles frozen on my face! I wanted a sub-60 but went 1:05.43. Not very fast and disappointing, BUT! I won my AG by 8 minutes. I find it pretty hilarious because I'm so not a runner. DH is a bit bummed because he only beat me by 30 seconds or so. If he hadn't made me walk at the beginning because the uneven terrain was not limb friendly, which was also the end of the race, I would have chicked him!

Boom!  Nice job!  4" of ice cold water sounds not fun at all, coupled with the icy wind but you clearly didn't let those factors (or the snotsicles) hold you back.  Nice domination of your AG and almost DH!

Wow!!!!!!!! That was awesome!!!!!!! I'm "watching" it on Twitter because the live feed wouldn't work on my computer. Wow! just WOW!

Hi

Sorry for not being about for the last three months but had a million and one things going on with work, moving house etc. Now need to get my self in gear and start training again instead of sitting on the sofa and eating cake!

Cheers

Tom when you work out how to get yourself to start please let me know. I'm really struggling now that it's dark in the mornings here. I want summer back already and it's not even winter yet.

How did I forget that you're a teacher? We have 25 student-contact days, 1 furlough day, and 1 teacher workday.

Oh, did I mention that next year will be 30 years and I am done?!?! That makes an additional 200 student-contact days, 2 furlough days (because they always make us take at least 2 days without pay), and 10 teacher work days/professional development days.

Not that I'm counting or anything.

Nice job, Robin.  Snotcicles!   Way to persevere.

I am tired.  And hungry.  And I have to convince myself to get out on my bike.  It must be almost time to race.

Can you run after work/in the evenings?  I find that I do much better with that in the fall/winter.  Also, did you get a SAD light?  They work!

That was also part of the problem as couldn't motivate myslelf this year to go out in the cold and the dark. Last year wasn't an issue and enjoyed running outside when it was. Turbo with a TV show in the kitchen I still enjoy though as get to catch up on some shows whilst working out as never have time to watch them without it! I've noticed with me if I give in at the start of the week the whole weeks session will go out the window but if I get Monday and Tuesdays done I don't miss the rest.

Running after work is difficult as I have night time meetings often during the school terms. It has finally cooled down enough that I can run at lunch time so I will start doing that when I get back from leave at the start of May. That will also help with the sunlight/vitamin D thing.

Really its just me making excuses for not running. I am up most mornings at 5:30am regardless of the dark/light situation and I have everything that I need to run in the dark and when I go I generally love being out when it is so quiet. It is just getting myself out the door that is the issue. I also have a perfectly good treadmill that I can use but...

Hi Tom!  Best of luck to you putting away the cake and pulling out some motivation.  At least you know yourself and your trends, so you can hopefully get yourself moving early in the week to keep the momentum.

Actually raced last weekend for the first time in a year (as in, was in shape to go hard rather than paying to run a course slowly!).  Was the same local one I ran last year, this time with Kim (no broken bones this time), on another hot afternoon.  Had a super fun time hanging with The Better Half and some town folks after.  Placed 5th OA and 1st 45-49, so that was fun (it was a SMALL field!).

No puppies at home yet, but we're still window shopping and day-dreaming.

Thinking about possibly doing a tri-training block this season (participate in some through the summer and possibly race in the Fall).  Not sure, though.  I'm not traveling like last year, but have a crazy 4-5 months ahead at work (and then probably a much more relaxed schedule).  Trying to figure what the right balance of family, fun (training/racing), work and starting back to flying again is.  But I'm kinda missing the bike and pool.

Gotta love first world problems, I suppose!

Matt

Congrats on the race - both the win/placement and fun with Kim and others!

I vote for tri training

All right y'all. DH and I are seriously considering taking a promotion to HQ in DC.  (I can't believe he is entertaining the idea)

It would be for 2-3 years, it would mean more money now and for retirement (high 3). We would be closer to DS2  but way far from DS1 and his girls.

I'm thinking we would rather rent because it's short term and mortgage interest is no longer helpful for taxes.  The problem with renting is the zoo that will be coming with us.

Anyone who has lived/worked in or around DC please give me your thoughts on being there, housing, working there and whatever else I don't know that I don't know.

While I cannot speak to housing or working (the only thing I know for sure is it's more expensive than where I live which is to be expected from a metro area), I can and will say that traffic is a royal b*tch in the outlying areas (Bethesda, etc) but I don't recall it being nearly as crazy in the city proper, yet the streets are far from empty.  If you can walk or use public transit that would probably be your best bet.

my niece works and lives in DC. Of course, she is 20 something, so her idea of things may be different than yours, but she loves being there. She takes Uber or lyft most places. She also has a couple of roommates because otherwise she’d be living on the street!

Bwahahaha. Nope, you're most definitely not counting.

If I make it to 30 years, after this school year, I will have 2,880 student days left. That said, I have almost 3/4 of a year of banked sick days, so I might be able to cut off at least 180 of those in the end.

I've been pretty blessed with amazing kids this year, which is fortunate because the 3 years prior were pretty darn rough.

Maybe contact Judi(QueenZipp) or Laura (Atlantia)???  I believe both of them are close to that area. I love DC, but I am an infrequent visitor, so take that for what it is worth.

I can't believe you are trying to slip the mention of the girls by us. Family is interesting, isn't it?

I have been too busy to count LOL. Maybe something similar. I think we have seven weeks left, but there are a bunch of 4-day weeks in there.

Sorry for few posts lately. Been going crazy trying to set up transport for people and cats back to the US, plus offload most of my stuff that's not human, feline, or tri-related. Plus I've been fighting some kind of cold/hopefully not flu virus for the past few days.

It sounds like a great opportunity career-wise. All I know about DC is that there is a lot to do and there is a lot of traffic (but at least they have a mass transit system).

I'd love to be in the same time zone as you!

Maybe we can start planning a Manatee Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) adventure?

That ride looks cool! I pulled up the elevation chart and it looked like mile 60ish to 120ish was really steep. Then I saw the note that max % grade is 1.5%.  Sounds like a Florida ride!!
