I also go by Dally. What I don't do is use my full name anymore, because now I have chlldren, a business, and at least one bizarre rabid stalker who scared the hell out of me on usenet. I vastly regret using my real name on usenet in the early 90's. Who knew about google?
Sergei Brin.
Yeah, I'm in a similar boat. My profession is notoriously judgemental and priggish, so I've been careful never to have any sort of personal web presence that could be used against me. In fact, there's been some buzz recently that people have been being turned down for jobs after their potential employers get a look at their blogs. I guess I was sort of anticipating this lo these many years, and so when I first started to participate in geeky online techno forums, I decided that I wouldn't use my own name, but would rather think up some . . . stupid nickname. There you go.
Actually, now that I read that last paragraph, it sounds a bit more mysterious than I meant to be. I'm not trying to lie or obfuscate, I'm just trying to keep a low profile and separate work and private lives. Maybe I should be "Bruce Wayne". I always liked that Snickers ad with the recently-unconscious football player: "What's your name, son?" "I'm Batman!"
