The coldest I've ever swam in is 64, and that was only 1/4 mile (no wetsuit). I have a sleeveless wetsuit and two swim caps to wear, will I be okay?

Reserve a neocap for me. The biggest size they got! I'm serious, I'll look for you on Saturday.

i'm on the fence right now as to whether to do this or not. I have no wetsuit, and I don't want to kill myself just to prove the point that I can do a triathlon with an OWS.

anybody know what the latest point I can bail out, and move my registration to next year is? At this point, I'm thinking of waiting until Friday night, I can test the water then, and make a decision from there.....if they will let me wait that long.

I plan on doing the silver lake tri in portage next month, and am thinking maybe I can/will prepare more for that one? I really dont know....right now, it's a battle of my pride vs my common sense.

any thoughts??

Disclaimer #1: I've never done SOR, nor have I done an OWS in Lake Michigan.
Disclaimer #2: SOR will only be my 6th race in my 2nd tri season.

That being said, I took a quick look at your log and noticed that either a.) you don't log your swims, or 2.) you don't swim too often. Do you feel comfortable swimming? Do you feel you're a halfway decent swimmer? I ask because if the answer is "not really" to either one, I'd hold off on making my first OWS in Lake Michigan in low 60s water. I swam in Green Bay for the Door Co. tri last year in 64 degrees with no wetsuit, and after the 1/4 mile swim I was numb (SOR is 1/2 mile). If swimming isn't your strongest leg, I would consider starting off with a milder OWS like Silver Lake.

But I submit to more experienced opinions.

thanks, your kind words are certainly appreciated. I wouldn't say that I HAVE a strong feature...so I'm thinking I may postpone my SOR dreams until next year. Maybe I could cover my body with those neoprene hats.

Lake report for today:

water was on the cold side , but not painful. I had on ear plugs and a swim cap and to my surprise my head was not cold after the first minute. I was trying to track dnow a neo cap , but it appears a swim cap with the race cap over the top will be warm enough. Lake was pretty flat.

Thanks for the update Pete.  Thanks for reminding me about using two caps.  I think I'll be doing that instead of going for the neo cap.  At least for now.

I just hope and pray it stays flat for Saturday and Sunday.

I saw that too, but then I also went to the home page and saw this.

NOTICE: One of the satellites which provides the temperature data for Sea Grant CoastWatch (NOAA-16) sometimes fails to gather accurate data needed to create the surface temperature charts.

I'm hoping that there was some cloud cover when that happened that gave a false reading, because as you can see, there is quite a bit of blacked out data quite close to that temperature.

I had originally posted that I checked and it still said 67.2, but now I got the reading that y'all got, with the cloudy black coverage, so I see what you mean.

I pray to the good man above, that it's a mistake...holy sh*t that's cold.

Pardon my french!

I swam this morning with Pete....it's cold but doable (is that even a word?) It does take some time for your body to feel comfortable in it tho! Oh well, there really is nothing we can do about it but DTFU (as djdavey would say).....LOL....

Logistics dictate that we take the kiddos to Port on Saturday for an overnight with the Grandparents so I jockstrap for Clint on Sunday.   Darn

Whoa! Did I miss something? I thought I paid extra for flat water with a surface temp of 74, tailwind in all directions and an easy run.

Stupid fine print! It says chance of , but highly unlikely.

The update is much appreciated...do you mind if I ask if you were wearing a wetsuit (I am assuming so) and if so, if it was sleeveless or LS?

Pete if you would've bought the Deluxe race pkg, you could've swam at the YMCA. I think the economy pkg, gives you t-shirt, free beverages on bike and run course and lumps you in the general population on the swim.
