OMG David thank you for posting that in this thread, as I was going to bring that up as well.  This race this year was TERRIBLE!!!  To chime in, these were my thoughts I was sending to them in an e-mail:

1.  At registration, I was told by NUMEROUS volunteers that were checking me in that I was registered for the wrong race.

2.  I was told at registration, that there was a Women's Only, a Men's Only, and a sprint race on Saturday

3.  I was told that even though my race didn't start until 9, I would have to be out of transition at 7.

4.  When I went down to the race site on Friday, I was told the racks were going to be numbered, which, as you stated, they were not.

5.  Goodie bag blew

6.  Color of the shirt was GOD awful!  Seriously, mustard???

7.  No race marshals on the bike course...I saw a lot of drafters, and it annoyed me.

8.  The website was unbelievably hard to navagate through this year

9.  It is 12:15 2 days after and only half the results are up...where the hell are the rest of our times?

That is all I can think of right now....I am exhausted....I am sure there is more.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Don't even get me started.  I got passed, with about 3 miles to go, by a Peleton of 6 rider's, all changing positions and drafting like there is no tomorrow.  A few lengths back another guy passes me, completely on his own.  He said they have been doing that essentially the entire bike time.

It was then that I realized I hadn't seen a single motor bike on the course, meaning no course officials.  WTF?!?!

I have a feeling there was a malfunction on the timing mats.  I wonder if it has to do with the rain?

Based on my own watch, I was able to fill in the blanks (swim and T1), but I would still like to see the individual splits and how I rank against my AG.

It probably makes sense at the women's only race the entrance of tran area was underwater by a few inches and then got pumped out by the time I went to walk down the beach. My watch has the swim, T1, bike, and first run mile on it and then mile 2,3 splits seperate. I did the math last night , but I can 't tell if my bike time was off or my T times

I would highly advise you put this in your RR and get this out to the Director.  They were well-understaffed, too.

I volunteered right on the spot to help out the guy at the bike finish to make sure peeps would slow down and dismount properly.  Yep.  I was the tall, skinny, LOUD dude telling everyone to slow down and dismount at the orange line.  The other 3 that were supposed to be there walked away (maybe were reassigned somewhere else but didn't tell the last guy?).

I'm definitely writing a note to the RD.  But I wanted to calm down a bit so it didn't come off as hot headed.  I work in Client Service so I know what it is like when someone just takes off emotionally.  It is better to put down the issues with the event, not the emotions it caused.

Anyone that wants to do the same, I would recommend this as well.  Give a a day or two more.  Let your emotions die down a bit and then, when writing, cite specific instances.  Don't do the "your race sucked" thing.  Cite the Expo. Cite the lack of course officials (which is actually quite disturbing).  Cite the perceived lack of organization.  But leave it as free of emotions as you can.  That kind of critical feedback is necessary if they are to improve.

Yup, that was Phil...

Here's a little secret I'm going to let you in on RE: HFP.  They rely a LOT on the local tri groups to get together the volunteers.  It was very disorganized in that area last year as well.  I will be writting them an email, but like Crowny suggested, I'm going to wait a few days...

Then thank you.  I do remember you.  So in reality, we did meet.  Sort of.  If only briefly.

I was the one in the tri-suit.

BTW, anyone else as disappointed with the race quality (not your own results, but the organization) this year?

I am.

  1. Expo was cramped and seemed to be unorganized, especially the room with the check in.
  2. Swag wasn't as good (although I'm seeing that in quite a few races this year compared to last, is anyone else?)
  3. No data on wave start times.  I didn't know when I was going off till I got down to the start line.  And I wasn't alone.  Seemed as if no one knew.
  4. Bike racks not numbered, which they were last year.  Seriously, any race with more than 200 participants should be numbered.  Otherwise it is a clusterf**k of a mess.
  5. And the worst is the continued waiting for the official results to be posted online.  Still waiting.  Something seriously wrong must have happened.

Those are just a few things that kind of bugged me this year.

Anyone else?

I thought it was fine, except the run WAS different...no zoo, and lots more hills. They told me what time my wave went off at packet pickup. The shirts are NEVER the best...this year at least they made different ones for the different waves...but baby poop yellow for the BLUE wave?? In the past, one shirt for all...no recognition for doing the half. I found the results online by 5 on Sat night. (first time I looked). Did suck that the timing mat at the bike out/in did not work, so no transition or bikes splits. (unless they have that fixed, have not looked back!)
