Just wondering- do they have that every year??? There are multiple hot tubs set up right outside the changing tent post-wetsuit peel if you need to use one. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: 2009 Ironman Coeur d'Alene on TV Tonight! Universal Sports is televising this year's race! I'm in San Diego and Time Warner 136 is showing the event at 6:00 P.M. tonight! Oh yeah, and the training has already begun for me. Just finished the La Jolla Rough Water Gatorman (3-Mile) on Sunday. Well, not officially as I missed the 1:45 time cut-off, finishing in 1:57. Also have the following events in my sights: 9/20/09 - Santa Cruz Olympic 9/27/09 - La Jolla Swim Relay (2 One-Mile Legs) 10/04/09 - Mission Bay Sprint 10/11/09 - Chicago Marathon 10/25/09 - Soma Half-Iron 11/08/09 - Full Silverman(?) 12/06/09 - Las Vegas Marathon 3/27/10 - Oceanside Half-Iron 4/19/10 - Boston Marathon Now, if I can just find a century or two, I should be ready to go in June! Good luck to everyone in their preparation! |

Is anyone taking a break from SBR? I'm afraid if I do too much SBR now, I'll be burnt out once we start cranking up the volume in April and May, but I also don't want to lose to much fitness. Is there a happy medium somewhere? Is burnout even something to be worried about? Lots of unknowns for this IM newbie! |

However, I probably will ease down in late November and then ramp up in mid-December. My schedule for 2010 is: Resolution Run 5k - January Brainsport Brainfreeze 1/2 Marathon - February Hypothermic Half Marathon - February Regina Splash and Sprint - March Brent Gibson Memorial - April Bridge City Duathlon - April Lake Shawnigan Half Iron - May SPIN Off Spadina - June Ironman Coeur d'Alene - June With luck, I'll be able to do Ironman Calgary 70.3 again, too. I'll be volunteering at IMC, but I don't know if I'll be signing up for it unless I don't sign up for IM Frankfurt for 2011. |

My intention was to take some time off for 3-4 weeks but after watching Universal Sports' coverage of IM CDA I just can't stop thinking about next year. My official training will start mid-December but I'm hoping to spend October and November working hard on my run. Tons of fartlek and interval workouts in my near future, UGH! As of now I don't have any pre-CDA races planned but I'd love to throw 1 or 2 in there to help with training. Any BTers have tips for me on what distances and when to get some training races in? And hello to familiar people, we shall have fun or else! This will be my 2nd IM and hopefully I can pick up the pace a bit. I finally have a place to swim in the winter that is not 100 miles away, as of tonight, so that gives me a free 8 hours each week to train yay (swimspa in the home). Now to figure out how to swim faster. Anyway hopefully I can pick up the speed and avoid some of the little practical issues from the first IM. Some day I will do a Triathlon with a single transition area.... so much easier.

I did my first IM this year and my nutrition plan worked fine, ran the whole mary and was not starving at the end. I did 1 Gu 15 min prior to swim, 1 bottle of 1050 cal Infinit (washed down with water) on the first half of the bike 1050 Bottle of Infinit 2nd half of bike, and 8 Gu on the run (every 30 ish minutes) and like 1 cup of gator aid for a change of pace somewhere in there. So 100 calories before the swim and around 3000 calories total once the race started until the finish line. That is just me, so practice what you are going to use and stay with it. |

What I am wondering is how important is lifting weights and core training. I started weight training about 6 weeks ago. I've never been into weight training and it seems that every time I try to start core training I get injured. So, is weight training and core training going to benefit me a lot? Everthing about IM training is new to me so any advice would be helpful. I still haven't gotten aerobars and am wondering if that will really help me or not. In all of my other tri's it's my neck that hurts on the bike so will aerobars help with that? Thanks all and happy training! Looking forward to meeting other BT'ers. Kendra Kendra, a few thoughts for you (and other first timers): 1 - You still have 9 months to go, think about something else for a while (still workout but don't stress about calling it IM training). 2 - Most would agree that a strong core will help. There is a lot of debate about if weight training will help. I lift weights in the winter (high rep, low weights) but give it up in the spring when I start riding outdoors. 3 - In general doing a little bit everyday is better than doing to much and getting injured. This is true for swimming, biking, running, and core/strength work. If you alway get injured when you start core training then you are most likely doing it wrong or doing too much. Assuming that your form is correct, take whatever you have been doing in the past only do about a quarter (of less) of that. Slowly, slowly, slowly build up from there. It's real cool to say that you do 200 situps a day, but if you cann't do anything else for weeks after that then what's the point. 4 - Aerobars. My experiance is that adding aerobars to a road bike will help you go 1 to 2 mph faster. Also my wrist and arms get tired riding a traditional road bike, aerobars really do give your arms a break. For me, aerobars are the most comfortable place to ride once they are set up correctly. 5 - Training logs. If you are not keeping a training log then start now! In IM training there will be days that suck and everything goes wrong. You will wonder if you will ever be ready. It is nice to be able to look back and see how far you have come with your training. Your training log is also very usefull when it comes time to figure our your race day plan. The BT logs are also a good way to get to know other people who are racing. Half the fun of race week is meeting people that you have gotten to know online thru the BT logs and race forums. Hope this helped. See you in June. |

I'm stoked to start training though, it's less than 9 months out!!! In my one IM back in 2008 I was fearing the swim start as well. I found that it wasn't as bad as I made it out to be. Don't get me wrong, there was bumping, kicking, lots of contact, etc... but not what I had made it to be. I knew I was a 1:30 swimmer so I just stayed back at the cannon and took a slow walk to the water. I have started toward the front of smaller races and found it worse. Don't let it get to you too much. Be prepared, but don't stress. |
