Had a frosty, slippery 12.4 mile run this afternoon. 12 degrees and windy when I started and 8 degrees when I finished.

Curious how I should count tomorrow's drill workout. About a 15 minute warm-up jog and about a 20 min easy run afterward. Thoughts?

maybe count it as what an average 35 minute run would look like for you. (In terms of mileage) That seems fair.

My week has been pretty good thus far.

Monday: Recovery 7.2 miles + Strength

Tuesday: AM 10 miles with progressive finish and strides PM 4.5 miles + Strength

Wednesday: Midday 3.5 mile shakeout PM Track workout. 3 x 2 miles at 6:48 in the wind (+ WU/CD)

Today: AM 6.2 miles recovery PM 3 miles + strength and drills

I'm pretty tired. Tomorrow should be some nice recovery before Saturdays quality workout and Sundays long run.

I'd count the equivalent of 1/2 hour of easy running. Drills usually are done a bit slower in order to execute them extremely well. It's not about pace when drilling, just form and execution.

Nice week. You'll likely find a big of fatigue and loss of that ability to push on the harder workouts for a few weeks...but the mental/physical break is always worth it. I'll bet you find that you gain strength and stamina over the next few weeks.

After a big week last week which included three trainer sessions, I decided to back off a little this week given that I'm also adding on top of that two easy swim sessions.  I am still maintaining my key runs of one speedwork session, one midweek medium run, and my long run.  Still trying to run seven days but I've cut the easy days down a bit.  I think I'm still running my easy days too fast but I really have been feeling great.  I sense some cummulative fatigue just starting to set in so may alter next week to get a little more rest/recovery.  I am learning that swim/bike really get in the way of maximizing run training but I guess that is the nature of the beast.  I am hoping that I continue to learn how to better manage it all.

Great question! In this particular case I am talking about supplemental strength. I generally work on the core and leg strength. I do compound body weight stuff like pull ups and inverted crunches and then things like step-ups/downs and box jumps. I do also do running specific strength, like hill work.

So far this week, I'm at 11 miles (2, 2, 3, 4). The Achilles is still sore, but seems to be a little bit better based on me easing up a little bit. I've also been off the bike trainer for about 2 weeks now, which may have allowed a little recovery. I'm starting to bring my mileage back up slowly. As I said in another thread, it is *really* frustrating. I've spent a lifetime struggling to get through runs, and finally I get to a point where running is so much easier and more enjoyable for me, and I come up with a problem. I'm trying to be smart about it, as I know the Achilles is not something you mess with, but it is a mental strain. I know it is the same as anyone dealing with an injury, but the timing was pretty frustrating for me!

I may have to punt on the 100 miles for the month, but assuming I don't come up with more pain, I want to at least get back on track for about 30 miles a week by the end of the month. I've found the easy miles haven't really bugged me too much, but if I push the speed up a little, I tend to get a little more sore in the Achilles. Does this seem like what should be expected?

That sounds about right! The more speed work I do, the more Achilles bothers me. I'd just do the best job of cool down, stretching, and *icing* after your runs. Until I got my running form decent, I was having more Achilles problems. Then again, I also have flat feet and use orthotics and a control-type running shoe. Hope this helps. Feel better soon.

Brad, I dealt with about three years of Achilles issues and have now been free of it for about six months.  It was really, really tough at times.  I never rested it like I should have but tried to keep training through it.  I limped from the time I got up in the morning until five minutes before my evening run.  You are right, as soon as I ever tried increasing my pace it would flare.  I developed a more shuffling type of gait to protect it and I gravitated towards shoes that had a larger toe drop to take a little pressure off my heal.  I think the key for me was not stressing it anymore than absolutely necessary.  Eventually I got ahead of the curve and over time was able to get past it.  My formula was to decrease intensity, decrease distance, increase frequency to get my workload in.  For some reason I felt better the day after a short run than I did with no run.  Keeping it and other peripheral muscle groups looser I think helped.

That's some serious mileage, man!

I had a terrific after-work, end-of-the-week evening run tonight. Weather was in the 70's and gorgeous. Felt really good. Ran faster than usual but did not really notice. Just shy of 25 for Jan so far, so I'm on track for the 100 by my calculations. Have a "long" run by my standards tomorrow, just shy of an hour. May do a trail run, so the distance won't be as far as one of my typical long runs. It's all good, though.

I like this thread because it's sooo positive...keep up the great work, everyone!

Yesterday, 3 miles. I 'should' run today, but the weather's nice...thinking of a bike ride...but I shouldshouldshould run.

Did I say...should? lol

I need new running shoes. Thinking about asics, heard great things about them. I'm wanting something minimalist. Have always bought Nike, need something new, I'm thinking.

Run today, you'll be glad ya did!Shoes: try lots of different types and pick what's comfortable. Don't get sucked into any hype.

Did about 12 today. Warmup then 6 miles at 6:48 then 250 m strides in the turf, some barefoot then cool down. It was nasty out and we were running around the track and the lake so the wind cycled between headwind tailwind and crosswind. Long run tomorrow. Seahawks today!!!!

That's excellent advice...(to run) but also to not get 'sucked in' to any type of shoe. You're right. I will try a few. There's a shop not far from where I live, that gets you to run on a treadmill, then they tell you what's best for you. Shoes are super pricey though, eek. Thanks for the advice, and I probably will end up running. I like your new avatar!

Many, many shoe options out there today.  I spent years on ASCIS GT series and DS Trainers.  More recently I've been running on Mizunos. Like them better because they have a softer ride, especially their neutral shoes.  You will only know what is right for you after trying a bunch.

Go buy those new shoes and go for a run!!
