Janyne, I hope you do awesome this weekend, along with all other racers. My art teacher is a runner and missed qualifying for Boston by two minutes. She blames it on the new brand of gel she tried because there was nothing else at the aid station.
Laura, great job on the continuous swim this week! My workouts are usually about that length or al little longer, but I don't know if I could swim 1700 straight with no breaks.

Good luck, Jaynyne! Didn't realize Boston was here already!

Actually I am racing this weekend too (I hope--this has been a logistical mess so far with last-minute venue change and new rules about what kind of vehicles in Singapore can take my bike--ugh!) Singapore Sprint Tri tomorrow. About to go take the bike for a spin and make sure everything is in order. Really hoping I don't get caught in a violent rain/lightning storm like I did on yesterday's run. Of course rain is forecast for tomorrow--just hope it holds off during the race (at least swim and bike) and for a few hours after. (I have to ride about 11 miles back to the hotel, then pack up the bike for the flight back. Plus somehow find a place to change clothes.)

For those that may not know, Janyne is racing in the Boston Marathon on Monday, 4/18.  Information on how to stalk track her is on her blog page.  She is one of our manatees that is very dedicated to sticking to her training plan and she consistently works hard to keep herself healthy and ready for events both by putting in the time and sweat to do the workouts, but also taking time to maintain her body with stretches, etc.  Somehow she still finds time to help Zoe not be such a 'teenager' and learn to be a well-behaved young adult. On top of all that, she helps keep us manatees informed and inspired.

GOOOOOOOO JANYNE!!!!

Thanks for posting this Melanie. I am always impressed by Janyne's commitment and discipline. Not only to her training and her family, but to our lives as well.

GOOOOOOOOOOOO Janyne!!!

Well said!!

Good luck, racers!

Go Janyne!!!! Soak it all in and remember to smile for that camera!

Heal fast, Judi!

I ran outside for the first time today. I was like Steve Martin in The Jerk when he discovered he was in the phone book. I attached a picture of the lighthouse by my house which serves as a turn around for most of my runs.

Had to cancel my ride today to a minor medical issue.

I'm totally bummed out. It's nothing big but I didn't want to take any chances.

Yeah, it's pretty close to my left arm, but not quite. Can feel funny though actual performance differences only seem to show up in some (not all) best effort activity.

And go, Karen!!!

Oscar is actually at all the Meta series stuff as well ... he's the barely 5ft Indonesian guy at the front I hope the weather holds up for you guys during the race but especially after. He'll be biking back to the ferry as well.

He, Kingsley and I will all be at Vietnam as well. Did you PM me your phone number last year? I'll be getting a VN number again so I definitely want to hook up. When are you getting there?

It'll be a much better year for me (not racewise, I'll be lucky to finish at all) but this year all the Indonesians did Putrajaya instead of Vietnam, so I get more of a breather.

Hey guys, yeah I still lurk occasionally

Anyhow, to add to your racing list, spud-mom is running Boston this year (#25545), very proud of her.  Well except she's fast so I don't get to make excuses about genetics haha.

(as a side note: after my PE and discovering I had genetic Factor V Leiden mutation, I let her know so she could get herself checked.  The response?  "BLAME YOUR FATHER")

After our little convo the other day, I remembered you used to lurk in these parts, occasionally swoop, and I wondered if you still did ...

GO MOM!!!

Hi Yanti! From that description, I'm pretty sure I know who Oscar is! About to go compress myself into my race suit. I'll PM you in the next week or so with my phone number. Flying up to Danang on Friday morning (the 6th). Blowing both my personal leave days on that race. (Next year we won't have any, so I'll be "paying to race" even more so than now.)

Just hoping that I don't get sick like last year. Training has been going well so I guess that is pretty much in the bank no matter what with three weeks to go. Now it's just a matter of staying healthy. (And I'm sure you know all about that!)

See you soon!

Lady, you MOPPED UP!!! Top 10?!?! Holy schiznit. Big congrats. Oscar did great too ... I just despair of teaching that boy how to swim ... he's not bad, though. And considering he's got zero decent pools in Bintan (and gets maybe 2x/week half an hour here and there in shytty ones) he's all right.

Originally posted by awm007 Hi Manatees, This newbie needs a little advice. My training thus far has been focused on the 70.3 coming up in early June. My training has moved from a base phase to a build phase. It's been tough, but I've been able to keep up with it more or less. The plan basically has short workouts during the week and long rides and runs on the weekends. This week, I'm heading out of town for a conference. The conference is really a morning, noon, and night affair and it'll be tough for me to get much training in (maybe a one hour run or so). Then, next weekend I have a sprint tri and an olympic the following two weekends. Bottom line is that that's three weekends in a row where I won't be getting the long run/ride in. Here's the question. How would you train around the warmup races and travel? One school of thought is to build the races into the training (e.g., do the sprint at training pace, then afterwards get the extra time as suggested by the program). Another is that it's a race and I might as well go all out and, well, you know, race! Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Can you get a medium-long run in at the conference?

Adam, since the Sprint is on Sunday, could you do a long ride/run on the Wednesday before and then race the sprint?  Are you staying at White Lake or driving down that morning?

Is Beaverdam your first Oly?  I'd take Sean's suggestion about riding after the race if you can't get a mid week long ride in.  You do need the going into the HIM.

Are you going to preview the IM Raleigh 70.3 course?

Just popping in to say a big thank you to Sean, Janyne, Steve, Ben, Karen, Stacey, and Jim for the advice. I did manage to get a long run in during my trip and hope to get on the bike today for a long ride. The run was pretty eventful as I seem to have stumbled in on a drug bust or something. Four cop cars with officers with guns drawn and a chopper overhead swarmed a hotel parking lot I happened to be running past. I definitely stepped up the pace! I'm going to try to shift around the long runs and rides to mid-week to the extent that I can.

Janyne, have an amazing race tomorrow!

I hope all of the other racers are having a great race weekend too.

Not exactly. Thought they would have to mop ME up off the course. All this technical stuff on the bike due to the venue change (and of course, when due to road construction around here I've hardly ridden outside for months), somehow managed to get an asthma attack 2/3 of the way through the bike leg, couldn't breathe right for the first half of the run, then by the time I got that sorted out, started feeling like I was going to puke. Just not the most awesome race. I did see Oscar--he's who I thought he was. Quite a looker, too, if a bit short! Poor guy--the swim today was choppy and, it seems, a tad long. I placed well (for me) as it was the same place as my run for women (8th) and higher overall (which only happens on a good swim), and it was 15:50. What???? Two others said their Garmins had it between 930 and 950m. Either they are absolutely terrible at sighting, or that was one of the most inaccurate swim courses in history. But not compainin'--they can make the swim 4K as far as I care! Just so the bike is short.

Don't sweat it, the training you did in March will see you through. Just ease back in to it, don't rush back in and get injured. It's much better to get there under prepared than injured. Races are not won by the last 4 weeks worth of training, but the previous xx months of training. Hope you had a good time in Orlando. You've made me jealous.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
