I just had a phone convo with potential new coach.  No questionnaires, TJ, just chatting.   I think I'll keep my current coach through June since he already made my June workouts and I feel it's only right to pay him for that, so I may as well use the workouts, too and not double up (on coaches in June).  Close to the end of the month I'll figure out a way to break up with him and officially make the switch to the new guy/group.

Good plan!

I sent an email to the RD from my last ultra, who is also a coach. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

Yes, I'm quoting myself

I heard back from the "other" coach, Justin, who was RD for Moab and the Colorado ultra that I ran. He says he'd love to help. He sent me a link to his coaching background and pricing. The background I'd read when I thought about contacting him a few weeks ago. The prices are more than fair. I just need to make sure he understands that the TOTM is a bike event.  I don't see much (any) multi sport on his page.

I went back a few pages but couldn't see what happened with Coach Scott.  Is he for sure out of the picture?  Justin for sure would be a great coach/resource for your ultra running, but it would be nice to have some bike workout guidance.  OTOH, you could probably find some sort of online century training plan online and maybe Justin would have some sort of idea how to work that in with the running plan?

ETA: Mad Moose, I love the name!

I'm checking with him to make sure he's comfortable writing a run/bike plan. It wouldn't make sense to pay him to coach the ultra and throw in bike which could possibly be detrimental to what he's trying to do.

One of the RWB runners I met last weekend, Cliff, is an ultra runner. He'd done the Jemez Mountain Trail Run that I volunteered for the previous weekend AND did the Santa Fe Century (ride) the next day! I need him as a coach!!!!!!!!

ETA: Coach Scott is taking too long to get back to me. Which seems menial but it gives me pause as to his timeliness and I was unsure about his ability to coach ultra anyway.

It's definitely a good sign that he got back to you right away!  Is IM still on the table for next year?

Yes, gulp. I'm waiting until DS2 gets his orders before I choose one.  For that I may do a canned plan or talk with Scott (again) or Michi.

I was just wondering if you or Justin were making a change in direction.  He does sound like he will be great for your ultra!

Eric. I LOVE the NYC tri. The swim is super duper fast. They have a time trial start. The road is closed to traffic and the run through central park is just lovely. The support is fantastic, too. Also, they have the pros start, then the para triathletes. THEN they start with the old and infirm (me). They have a delay then start the young and speedy. I know it seems odd, but there is never a huge mass of people, but we all end close enough together (outside the pros) so those of us who are at the end never feel the event is over by the time we are done. A bonus for me is that I usually get to run amongst the young, hot men??????????

I'm Justin and thanks for the feedback! Sounds like a great event that I'm going to look into for next year. Hopefully there are some hot women there too! Having run many miles in Central Park in my day I can't imagine a better run course.

Calling for your help.

I'm at the stage of writing out an interactive route card on a speadsheet.

I have 31 map routes left to do (I've done 1 and part way through another.) but am finding it very time consuming and am quickly running out of time with all the other things I need to do.

If any of you could spare a little bit of time to help I would be very grateful.

The spread sheet/route card can be found here: Route Card. Instructions on what to do can be found on the spread sheet and also here Instructions.

I have filled out Map AB2 as an example already and am starting to fill out map AB3. Ignore AB1 for the time being as the route needs altering.

If you can find some time, reply on this post by quoting this post and declare which map/route you are going to do. the routes are about 50 to 100 miles each.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks.

Checking with the Mr to see what kind of day he's having. Standy by! #unemploymentsilverlining

This made me laugh. Thanks all. I've done AB2, AB3,AB4 and AB5.I'll do AB6 and AB7. Have to go to work now, for your reference, it's taking me about 40 minutes per map.

I'll start with BC2

Not sure how to do the distance between places using GPSies.

Hopefully it'll become clear when you follow through from the instructions. Basically you're loading a route in to Gpsies, then you're editing the route. Make a note of the total distance and elevation given on Gpsies of the route you uploaded. Select the town/city you are going to log. Work back from that town deleting the track point (blue dots) from the track back to the beginning of the track until you reach the green dot (the beginning). Then move the green dot all the way to the new town. Refresh climbing and note the new total distance and total climbing figures. Subtract these figures from the original figures you noted earlier. Enter these figures into the spread sheet. Repeat to the next significant town with these new figures until you get to the edge of the route. Hope this makes sense :/ It would be a lot easier to show it.

Where do you see total climbing? I see Elevation but that seems to change even as I zoom in and out (without changing any points).

Ah, that's the elevation figure for where your cursor is. If you scroll down the page there is total ascending and descending figures along with a bock that says refresh ?elevation? Or something like that. Cheers for trying.

Hi everyone I think that Mary S and Alex could use our thoughts and prayers at the moment.

Alex's brother is not well and they are talking palatine care (this has been very sudden) and they also have some housing issues that need sorting out for Alex's mum. So a couple of big stressful things happening for them.

Edit to the Instructions: Can you make sure the track is made Public, and not "not Public" as I previously asked? Janyne, can you edit your track BC2 to be made public so that I can access it on Gpsies. It won't let me upload that route now because you have, Doh. I need to have a squint at that elevation data. I think you have inputted elevation data for a single point, ie 696 feet. I have a feeling, judging by the area, that it should be close to 2000 ft. Thanks.

Heh heh, Darren you wouldn't want me touching your spreadsheet with a 10' pole! I'm such a newb at excel, any time I do something right I yell, "I DID SOMETHING!" at work.

Granted, I use it all day but our tools have a lot of guard rails that I can't mess it up

Hello everyone, btw! I've returned from my Asia(with a touch of middle east)-extravaganza and have seemed to have created myself a lot of extra work. Thus, my scarcity.

My highlights were many but sleeping in a floating bungalow in the middle of a National Park in Thailand may have been my favorite thing.

Oh and lookie, digging  back into my old triathlon roots and SWIMMING

Ooooooooohhh, a floating bungalow sounds heavenly and looks that way, too!  You have some of the best adventures in such fascinating places!

Thanks.

I emailed you a screen shot of what I am seeing.

I completed BC2 and BC3.

Protip: Do not use full screen.

Thanks.

Hey Darren! Sorry the Mr wasn't able to help. Turns out he got a surprise call for an interview (which is happening TODAY!!) so yesterday was all aflutter with haircuts and making sure suits were ready to go.

I didn't have a chance to look last night but this evening should be better. (after Janyne works the kinks out )

You don't know what you're missing, it's riveting stuff :/

Hi everyone... I'm not dead!

I've almost completed reading all 50 pages of the part deux and I wanted to say a HUGE, HUGE

THANK YOU!!!

to everyone that was stalking me in the non-creepy way during IMTX.  What a DOOZY of a race & massive congrats to Sean for absolutely CRUSHING it out there!

I almost got DQ'd the day before the race due to my own stupidity, lost my way during the swim in the fog & milky tea-colored water (and was told later by 5 different people I know, the swim was long by about a quarter of a mile), I was thoroughly enjoying myself on the bike until my back seized up around mile 60, and all you could do was laugh during the "run" (I couldn't run because of my stoopid knee).

I had the BEST time I've ever had during a race.  I chatted with everyone, thanked as many volunteers, police officers & cheering people along the road.  I hugged the first aid station person that had chicken broth during the run & I can tell you with absolute certainty that running whilst the weather is doing some crazy-a$$ sh*t (like torrential downpour of rain, hail, tornado-like winds, lightning & then more rain) is even crazier than it sounds.  But still... what else can you do but laugh at how completely ridiculous it was.  Jumping through the puddles & dancing all the way to the finish line - it was an EPIC day for a race!

Oh... and I've now signed up for IM Cozumel in November...

Great to see you Monica and so glad that you had such a great time at IMTX despite the weather.

Ooooooooohhh, a floating bungalow sounds heavenly and looks that way, too!  You have some of the best adventures in such fascinating places!

WOW you do go to the most amazing places!

but weren't you there for work? If is I need some lessons about how to get work to send me places like that. I get to go to boring places like Melbourne and sit in meetings all day wishing I could poke my eyes out with my pen. Does Starbucks need an accountant that is willing to travel to these horrible places?

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
