Just got my new UnderwaterAudio iPod.  Going to swim with it tonight and am psyched!  This plus a Garmin that counts laps (I can't count past 3 when I'm in the pool) have transformed my enjoyment in/of the pool.

My last one made it a couple years, and I've had to **GASP** swim my last 2 workouts without tunes.

First world problems.

Got one for The Better Half, too, as I had actually been using hers the last year or so.    Her hip is recently injured (not sure how, yet, but is intra-articular on exam... which means she needs to go to a real doctor and then we'll see), so I might have another pool-buddy along with DD and DS2!  I sure hope her hip is fine, and I think she miiiiiight even get in the pool even so.

Matt

I guess I'm into torture, I don't even run with music anymore. I do love the lap count feature of the garmin though, that is a critical piece of kit for me now. I hope the extent of your wife's injury is minimal and that she's able to get back at it soon. And for your sake I hope she convinces herself to get into the pool.

Talk about torture, seems like all my gadgets are breaking.  Some of these things just are not meant to last.

I love my Swimp3 especially while swimming in the local lake.  The water is not very clear so without it it's like running on a treadmill with your eyes closed.  I've been using it for about six years and I think I am on my sixth unit.  It just quit on me AGAIN.  Arghhh!!

I also have a Sportcount finger watch/lap counter and my fourth one quit several weeks ago.  Got a new one and it died after one use.  Argghhhh!!!

My Cat-eye is also on its last legs.  I have been meaning to get a Garmin 500 but just haven't yet.

The MP3 player I run with broke months ago and I just figured I'd go back to enjoying the sounds of the surroundings.

Anyone else experience short product lives with your gadgets?

Yep you've gotta hate built in product obsolescence! It is frustrating and it is made even worse when everything dies at once. One year when I was still at home with mum and dad we lost our fridge, washing machine, TV and computer all in a 6 month period. There was no extras in our house that year.

Yeah, I'm in a replacement frenzy of sorts.  My first swim iPod made it a year.  Then I used Kim's for a year and a half.  Had to buy several sets of swimming earbuds (they break frequently).  Have gone through a couple run ipods the last 3 years and countless earbuds (I think I sweat pure acid or something!).

Now, in addition to the new swim-pods, also replacing goggles, jammers, tires, a wheel hub, lenses in two pairs of glasses, socks that are threadbare and some other clothing.  Seems to have all packed it in over the space of a couple months after a couple years of hard use!  I hope my bikes are OK, as that would be a tougher pill to swallow!

As a yank, I tend to use things up rather just use them.    Makes me feel good!  But not the replacing, so much...

Matt

Well at least you know that you are getting your money's worth out of things.

I tend to treat clothes like that. I HATE clothes shopping and will wear my clothes for years. I had one pair of work pants for 8 years before I finally decided that they we too worn out to look professional anymore. I tend to do a clothes shopping spree when the year ends with a 5 or a 0 so this year is it unfortunately.

Just a quick check-in before bed.

Allergies suck!

T/Thu are now my dreadmill incline days. Yesterday + today's trainer= sore. More incline tomorrow.

Registered for Pat's Run last night. Yay! Will be corralled with a big contingent of RWBs. Kinda cool.

J's job hunt continues, though things are finally getting busy. Phoenix interview on Friday, flying to Cali interview next week, govt position seems to be coming around, and company he left for AZ is showing high interest in his availability.  Sheesh.

Hope Wednesday humped right along for everyone!

I'm here. I'm back. I'm alive! Oh, and a year older!

Most of you have seen these but here is how I spent my golden bday, in a fire lookout cooking good food, drinking good beer and trail running/exploring. More in my instagram and more photos to come

I've got to go write my race report. It already feels like an eternity ago! I've also got to catch up on all of yours!

Looking forward to the RR, as ever.

Pat's Run is a lot of fun.  I've gone down and done it a few times.  Pretty cool running into the stadium.

Well, if the high from my first triathlon hadn't worn off yet, then it definitely has now after a hard run this morning.

Matt & Jonathan we've got 1.5 more hard weeks then two weeks gradual taper (at least that's what my plan has) before Galveston 70.3. They've posted bib numbers and the swim wave start times. I have to say I hit the lottery on the swim start, feeling very fortunate there.

I think I'm going to go ride the course with a guy from work (also racing the event) next Friday if either of you are interested in coming down. We're going to try and figure out an open water swim beforehand if we can too.

And we do enjoy this run (albeit an extremely crowded event). The best is going through the tunnel when any military groups are doing cadence or Hoo-rahs. Loud!

It was at Pat's Run in 2009 that I had my infamous finish photo.  I'm been looking for it but can't find it.  Just crossing the finish line, the guy right in front of me is whincing and arching his back like someone just poured water on him.  You can see this stream of puke shooting from my mouth to his back.  Yes, it's a very crowded event.  I don't think he ever knew what really hit him.

Thanks for the notice!

But argh! I'm 2357 and go off at 8:04!  There are like a eleventy-three-gajillion waves in front of me.  Really bums me out, as the bike will be a total shyte-show by the time I get on the course (the swim always is, as I've yet to **ahem** take a pro card).   You definitely got a great wave!  Good to be young.

That said, I'm psyched to race again!  Been way too long and I'm really looking forward to this one, even if it's more completing than competing.  Who knows, maybe I'll catch some great, legal drafts!

So, 1.5 more hard weeks of high (for me) volume and some HIM pace intensity, then a week of moderately high volume with longer HIM intensity intervals mixed with easy ones (one week of peak, whereas I'd typically do two, with the second starting a volume reduction), then one week of taper.

My build schedule is more towards a late June, longer race, but I'll still be in B+/A- shape for this one (will actually taper at least some for it, so it's neither a PR attempt nor "training through").  My goal is to be fit enough to enjoy racing and chill enough to not be too bothered by placement (me being me, I'm always trying to race the best I can - this time just not gonna pay as much attention to the field and judge against what I thought I could do coming in).

Sux getting old and being in the back, but it beats the alternative!

Matt

Yes! Right before I read Wild. Doing this run twice already (supporting MY veteran) made me want to know about the person/whole story I was supposed to be "running for", not the media spin. There were times while reading that I really thought about not doing the run. He was so against being used for publicity and media hoopla, but having Marie Tillman involved in steering the foundation makes it seem appropriate.

PNW definitely draws us. I know he's put in for a few positions up there. Not sure if he's seen anything lately. Part of his quandary is that he's wanting to break out of the manufacturing pigeonhole that his resume creates and get into the alternative energy/efficiency side where his real interest lies.

ah well...thank you. He will get something, hopefully fantastic and soon

Overall I'm really happy with it. Most of my runs have been great, with a few sufferfests thrown in for good measure. My 18 miler last week sucked for the last few miles, mostly because of the hilly route I picked, so that's got me a bit anxious about 20. I'm sure it will be fine though. One foot in front of the other, right?

This weekend was actually supposed to be 14, with the 20 next week. But becuase next weekend is all about DS2's graduation I figured I'd do the longer run this weekend so it doesn't get short-changed.

I'm pretty sure that it is!  I may have missed someone but I did my best double checking yesterday and came up empty!

Not to worry, we have several racers with plans next weekend!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
