I have the vivoactive and the garmin swim (I got this one first) and I use the garmin swim over the vivoactive. I find the vivoactive pretty bad in comparison, it often miscounts and i'll get shorted a 25 or be over a 25.

Plus, it is just not as functional for the swimming I do - no rest timer, no drill mode. I otherwise love, love love the vivoactive but the swimmng feature is not reliable enough for me and i have the alternate.

Interesting.  I do wish the VA had a rest timer and drill mode. I just don't think I can justify buying another device.  I guess I could use my 910, but I really like the VA's small size and bluetooth capabilities.  First world problems!!

I don't know if you flip-turn or not (I definitely do NOT), but I've learned that unless I put my left hand (the one with the watch) on the wall when I change directions, it'll sometimes short me that 25 yd. segment.  No idea why, but it does.  If you flip turn & it's missing, I can't help you, because I haven't ever bothered to learn how to do them as I'm totally & irrationally afraid of smashing my heels on the pool.

I've almost completed reading all 50 pages of the part deux and I wanted to say a HUGE, HUGE

THANK YOU!!!

to everyone that was stalking me in the non-creepy way during IMTX.  What a DOOZY of a race & massive congrats to Sean for absolutely CRUSHING it out there!

I almost got DQ'd the day before the race due to my own stupidity, lost my way during the swim in the fog & milky tea-colored water (and was told later by 5 different people I know, the swim was long by about a quarter of a mile), I was thoroughly enjoying myself on the bike until my back seized up around mile 60, and all you could do was laugh during the "run" (I couldn't run because of my stoopid knee).

I had the BEST time I've ever had during a race.  I chatted with everyone, thanked as many volunteers, police officers & cheering people along the road.  I hugged the first aid station person that had chicken broth during the run & I can tell you with absolute certainty that running whilst the weather is doing some crazy-a$$ sh*t (like torrential downpour of rain, hail, tornado-like winds, lightning & then more rain) is even crazier than it sounds.  But still... what else can you do but laugh at how completely ridiculous it was.  Jumping through the puddles & dancing all the way to the finish line - it was an EPIC day for a race!

Oh... and I've now signed up for IM Cozumel in November...

Welcome back!  I hope that your life has settled down enough that you can be more active here.  We have missed you!

It's funny how the weirdest races are the most fun, isn't it!  The conditions for IMTX were definitely EPIC!

What have we told you about drinking and browsing the Ironman websited?! Seriously, I know a few people who have done Cozumel and they all go back and do it again!

Thanks!  Unfortunately it wasn't a chaotic life that was keeping me from BT, it was a few experiences that I had where a couple of things I wrote in both my blog & in a manatee thread were then passed on to Tony by one of the moderators who's friends with Tony.  I used to feel like this is a place where I can say whatever I want without having to mince or be careful with my words, but it really felt like that was taken away from me & as a result I kind of shut everything with BT down for a while because of it.  Dangit though, I just can't live without the Manatees!

I'm still hoping that Chris will agree with me that I could label that race as EPIC...

Lol!  Tony got jealous of watching all of the finishers & not racing, so it was HIS idea, but there may or may not have been alcohol involved in that decision!  I can't wait!!

One of my last pool swims I had a lovely gentleman in the lane next to me offer to help me learn... I tried ONE part way down the lane & felt so dizzy I thought I was going to hurl in the pool, so I figure I'm juuuuuuuust fine with NOT doing them & possibly smashing my heels.  :D

Calling for your help.

I'm at the stage of writing out an interactive route card on a speadsheet.

I have 31 map routes left to do (I've done 1 and part way through another.) but am finding it very time consuming and am quickly running out of time with all the other things I need to do.

If any of you could spare a little bit of time to help I would be very grateful.

The spread sheet/route card can be found here: Route Card. Instructions on what to do can be found on the spread sheet and also here Instructions.

I have filled out Map AB2 as an example already and am starting to fill out map AB3. Ignore AB1 for the time being as the route needs altering.

If you can find some time, reply on this post by quoting this post and declare which map/route you are going to do. the routes are about 50 to 100 miles each.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks.

Checking with the Mr to see what kind of day he's having. Standy by! #unemploymentsilverlining

This made me laugh. Thanks all. I've done AB2, AB3,AB4 and AB5.I'll do AB6 and AB7. Have to go to work now, for your reference, it's taking me about 40 minutes per map.

I'll start with BC2

Not sure how to do the distance between places using GPSies.

Hopefully it'll become clear when you follow through from the instructions. Basically you're loading a route in to Gpsies, then you're editing the route. Make a note of the total distance and elevation given on Gpsies of the route you uploaded. Select the town/city you are going to log. Work back from that town deleting the track point (blue dots) from the track back to the beginning of the track until you reach the green dot (the beginning). Then move the green dot all the way to the new town. Refresh climbing and note the new total distance and total climbing figures. Subtract these figures from the original figures you noted earlier. Enter these figures into the spread sheet. Repeat to the next significant town with these new figures until you get to the edge of the route. Hope this makes sense :/ It would be a lot easier to show it.

Where do you see total climbing? I see Elevation but that seems to change even as I zoom in and out (without changing any points).

Ah, that's the elevation figure for where your cursor is. If you scroll down the page there is total ascending and descending figures along with a bock that says refresh ?elevation? Or something like that. Cheers for trying.

Edit to the Instructions: Can you make sure the track is made Public, and not "not Public" as I previously asked? Janyne, can you edit your track BC2 to be made public so that I can access it on Gpsies. It won't let me upload that route now because you have, Doh. I need to have a squint at that elevation data. I think you have inputted elevation data for a single point, ie 696 feet. I have a feeling, judging by the area, that it should be close to 2000 ft. Thanks.

I emailed you a screen shot of what I am seeing.

I completed BC2 and BC3.

Protip: Do not use full screen.

I'll start with BC4

Cheers my dears.

BC4 done. It goes fast once you get the hang of it.  I'll look at another tomorrow.

I got the following message trying to upload BC5. Thoughts?

  • The track was already uploaded and saved as Puy de Deome to Grindelwald 1081-1184 km. For copyright reasons and to prevent double tracks, the upload of the same file is not allowed. The ID of existing track is: mgpxzaeihxwbfprl. If you have the copyright, then please contact us.

Sorry, being a pain here...

CD1 isn't giving me the little dots and a I can't move the start flag. Thoughts?

ETA: nevermind, forgot to click edit

CD1 done, but the climbing calculation seems suspect.

That's where I've uploaded the track in to Gpsies previously. I think, if you click the whatever the track has been named eg. Puy de dome... it will take you to the track where you can "make a variation" of it and rename it something else, edit it etc. There won't be an edit button when you upload a map someone else has put up before. Oh, and the elevation is correct for CD1, and that's after the climbing on the previous track of BC 6 :0

This simultaneously does not surprise me at all and brings on a confounding feeling as you had that handstand profile pick for awhile. Some gymnastics experience, right?

First of all, I'm glad you're going to try having foods during the training, and not the actual marathon I have not done the full course, but for my both HMs I had gummy bears and 90% dark chocolate (I froze it before to make sure it would not melt during the race).
I usually have few bears after mile 3 and continue every 3-4 miles, to make sure the sugar stuff are continuously coming to mu muscles (or wherever they need to go). Dark chocolate I had before mile 6 and then around mile 10.

My friends who did HM with my few weeks ago were making jokes about the gummy bears, and then begged me for some after miles 6 I was passing the bears to them approx. every 2 miles for the rest of the course.

The other thing I found interesting when doing longer races is nutrition for the whole week before the race, and not only on the race day. I'm pretty sure everyone is different and if somebody has fantastic and balance diet 365 days/year - it won't matter. But for me: I eat more rice, pasta, avocado (and dark chocolate) in a week before the race day. Same with hydration: I drink pedialyte every day for a week. But then, I am not good with drinking water, which is my mistake, thus, the pedialyte....

I will typically have nutrition for a half marathon.  For an HM I have a Gu at about the halfway mark.  For a full marathon, I go with every give miles because I find it easier to keep track of miles than minutes.  I try to take the Gu just before a water station so that I can wash it down.  The package says every 45 minutes.  The main things are (1) do not get behind on your nutrition and (2) practice.  When in doubt, start with what they are offering on course.  That way, if you drop your nutrition or forget it or something weird happens (weird stuff happens, see also, Monica IMTX), you have a backup.  I have stuck with Gu-type products because I can't chew something and swallow and run at the same time. I think that I'd choke myself trying to run and eat a jelly bean at the same time!  Clearly others are more talented than moi!

Would have suggested a number of things said here too. Also suggest looking at what's on course. It's really nice not having to carry things when running, they get heavy after a few hours. I've had to carry my own as my stomach has been rather sensitive to a lot of stuff. I never like chewing things while running and didn't want to risk choking, so only used gels. Solid was only for if I stopped, but this is a race. I could usually take a full gel, but not always. Take them just before a water station to wash it down. Many are intended to be used like this, with the water being taken in with the gel. Another benefit to being right by the water station is you can likely toss the wrapper there. Or what you don't finish from that packet. Hassles are 10 times worse in a race, so I just tossed ones I didn't quite finish. I could only handle a couple an hour at most, so had a little more leeway for remembering. It was also by feel to an extent because I had to gauge if my stomach could  handle it.

I have started to think about this for my Marathon in August and Mum, K and E are starting to ask me about it too. Some people I have spoken to here said that they just use jelly beans or snake lollies or things like that because they are easy to get and do the same job as gels. What are your thoughts on thus? K got to the 10k mark of the 12 that we did a couple of weeks ago and she said she was pretty much done - this was at about 1:30 (I think her pacing might have been an issue because we had done 10k a couple of weeks before and she was alright). K is a big girl but she doesn't eat a lot and I am thinking that maybe she needs to have small amounts starting at around the 45 minute mark. We are doing a 10k race this weekend which is pretty much unsupported so it's a good opportunity to try something. I know this is an individual thing and we all just need to experiment for ourselves and work it out but I need to help them with this and I don't feel like I have the knowledge to do that.

I use EFS vanilla, a type of gel.  I put it in a reuseable flask since I usually wear a Fuel Belt with water/sports drink and the Fuel Belt has a pocket thingie that can hold it. The nice thing about using the flask is you can adjust the consistency of the gel with a little water ahead of time if you like (I don't, but know those who do).  I seem to remember eating some around mile 4-ish and 8-ish, which for me is taking nutrition about every 45 minutes.

Any Manatees use the vivoactive for swimming? I have been for the last 4-5 months and it has been very accurate, but today it shorted a couple of 200 yd sets by 25 yrds.  Everything else was right on the money.  I know that I didn't miscount -which is always my first thought, b/c I would have ended up at the other end of the pool.  Just wondering why this happened and if anyone else has experienced it - whether with the vivoactive or another watch.  I have enough trouble keeping track of my distance without my watch confusing me

I do not do flip turns because I get motion sick from them  My swim stoke is so inconsistent that I'm sure some times I touch the wall with my left hand and sometimes with my right.  I'll have to try to make sure to always get my left hand on the wall - even if it means messing up my super swim timing!!

This simultaneously does not surprise me at all and brings on a confounding feeling as you had that handstand profile pick for awhile. Some gymnastics experience, right?

Ha!  About 17 years worth of gymnastics, but it wasn't water gymnastics!  No problems at all on dry land, but get in me upside down in the water and... URP!!!

I am trying it out. I use a Garmin 910, but I hate using the computer to upload and like to use my phone and ant2net pro. When I do that it uploads to garmin and strava, but not BT. When I first started it was duplicating workouts but hopefully it smooths out now.

I have found with my 910 that if I swim slower it will give me extra laps, but if I speed up it is usually right on. Were you pushing off the wall hard enough, because that is what it uses to determine laps.

Think I push off the wall pretty hard and don't think I did anything differently from the norm, but maybe I had a wimpy one on each of the shorted sets!  Now I have 2 things to think about next swim - hit wall with my left hand and no wimpy push offs!  Thanks!!

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
