Is anyone else racing?

Good stuff. Have fun y'all.

I have two "race" opportunities locally this weekend. The Run for the Zoo is Sunday and is a LOT of people in a small space. It's a popular one and I've never done it, so maybe. Orrr tomorrow is the Cinco de Mayo Cinco K. It's a small race put on by a LRS. I did it a couple years ago. It's a good chance to see local running friends, and the LRS is closing so it would be a good chance to bid the owner farewell. (he's not leaving, just closing the shop).  Orrrr I might just leash up the dog and go find a trail.

Happy birthday TJ!! I vote do ALL THE THINGS! Good luck manateam!

My first thought was DOOO EEETTT!!!!

Hmmmm, both hadn't crossed my mind...

well, now that it has, dOoo eeettt ( them!)

And, happy bday!

****Vent Alert*** Ignore at will

#$%^&*@#$%^&*^&*!!!!!!!!

I got a call from my allergists office yesterday afternoon. They discovered that the allergy formula they had for me was basically a placebo . How long has this been going on? Oh, about 5 months. How long have I been feeling like total crap? Oh, about 5 months!!!! So, all the days lost, all the doctor visits, and this is most likely the problem. Good thing I have been going to get shots every week to get ahead of things!!! Their way of making things okay is to give me the rest of my shots for free this year. I think they should pay for all the doc visits and time lost, but that isn't going to happen. Hopefully, once I get back up to where I am supposed to be on shots, I will begin to get myself back. How can allergies be so damn debilitating?

WTF!?  didn’t know what they were giving you? We’re you in some sort of study you didn’t know about?? They need to pay for your ENT visits too. I would hand them my bills!

Im glad that this came to light so you can get back to normal!

Welcome to the victims of crappy medicine club. My injury last year was misdiagnosed despite seeing three different doctors here and having an ultrasound and an MRI. Tons of treatments, none of which worked and most of which seemed to actually aggravate things, four months off running and basically immobilizing my foot for two months (which causes all kinds of other problems) when they thought it was a ligament tear. Turned out to be an irritated nerve UNDER the ligament; the ligament itself was fine with no sign it had ever been injured. All that would have been needed was probably a cortisone shot and two or three weeks' rest.

Now I have what seems to be a permanently touchy nerve--it's not really getting in the way of training anymore, but it's a real struggle to find shoes that fit the orthotics that minimize the pressure on that nerve and work for the rest of my body, and I have to baby it with ice and Advil sometimes after a long run or a long day on my feet at work. Grrrr....

And don't even get me started about the "quality" of care my dad received before he passed away.....

The level of care in medicine, in general, has really gone down hill. I know humans are pretty complicated, but they have ways to figure things out.

Sometimes it isn't much better here either - it just doesn't cost as much.

Some of you may remember that my Mum tore her medial meniscus in July last year, after months of "let's see if it will heal itself" talk the Dr finally sent her to have an MRI and she had surgery to repair it. For all this time she had been saying that her knee hurt in two separate places and they kept telling her it was referred pain and it would get better - well it didn't.

Finally at the end of March they sent her for a second less localised MRI and it turns out that all this time she has had a small vertical fracture in the end of her tibia. So she now has an "uploading" knee brace that takes a large amount of weight off her lower leg, to enable it to heal properly.

She walked around for nearly 10 months with this pain, including doing Dopey in January. She got her brace 2 weeks ago and she messaged me yesterday saying that she can run again without pain when she wears the brace - she is so excited.

That is sad that she had to suffer that long. Doctors everywhere seem to be so over scheduled that there is just no time to really listen to what the patient is saying. Or they don't take it seriously. I too was told that all the nerve issues were "referred" pain and that I had a stress fracture and/or a partial ligament tear. No one seemed to listen when I told them this injury started with cycling, not running, and seemed directly related to some ill-fitting shoes. That is just a red flag for Morton's neuroma. According to the podiatrist in Idaho who finally figured it out, it is common even in nonathletic people who wear shoes that are too narrow, high heels, etc. and is extremely common even in cyclists who don't run, as bike shoes often run narrow and are, by definition, rigid.

As for Dad, I'm sure at the point of his final hospitalization he was terminally ill anyway. But he said that for 36 hours, he was offered only one sandwich. He was hungry and frightened and no one responded to his repeated calls, nor was he given a medical reason why he couldn't eat, if there was one. A doctor never talked to him or my mother about his condition. My mother was quite ill with flu herself at the time she brought him in, but no one asked her if she was okay or needed assistance. She was driving by herself in freezing rain to and from the hospital. The next day, Dad discharged himself against medical advice and went home with his ill wife in an ice storm. There was NO follow-up to this (in my mind, someone at the hospital should have alerted social services, or at least me, at that point) until about ten days after my dad died, when a nurse/social worker who apparently had been assigned to the case called to ask how he was doing. At that point, my dad's physician (who works for that hospital) had already signed his death certificate.....You can imagine how that phone call went.

Karen I an so sorry that your dad did not receive good care. How is your Mum doing? Are you moving back to the US for the foreseeable future at the end of this school year or are you just taking a year off?

I will say that my mum's specialist has been great - possibly because he runs as well. Her local GP however has said to her on a number of occasions that she needs to remember that she is over 60 now and she should just accept that she cant run anymore. It did not go down well with her at all especially as she only started running a couple of years ago and loves it.

Mom is doing okay. She is here with me here in Vietnam, hopefully until the end of the school year in mid-June (if the visa gods smile on our renewal request).I think she gets bored during the day when I'm at work, but she has enjoyed seeing the city, going for walks, and trying different restaurants on the weekends. Finally I have found someone who shares my love of vegetarian Vietnamese food!

We are working on the logistics for getting people, cats, and stuff back to the US. I think I will be going back to the US for the foreseeable future, but Mom does not want to stay in Idaho. For a number of reasons, we are looking at moving to Hawaii. (No, not the Big Island--Oahu, probably the Honolulu area.) I went to grad school there and have some job contacts; they have a chronic teacher shortage due to the high cost of living. We have enough to buy a condo or small house, so that wouldn't be a barrier. One of Mom's best friends was Hawaiian; another close friend owned a vacation home there. We both have visited many times and love the area--not just the tourist spots. We also both detest winter!

But that is kind of a complicated move and we have a lot to do with finances, cats (Hawaii enforces similar quarantine regulations to Australia and the UK), following up job leads, selling the house in Idaho, etc. Thus the "gap year".

In other news, rainy season has started here today, as of Friday or maybe today. (Big storm with lots of rain.) I am enjoying it because I know I don't have to endure it for the next six months!

Im so glad your mum was able to go back to Vietnam with you, I'm praying the visa renewal happens and she gets to stay until June.

Hawaii sounds exciting. I understand the frustrations of getting your animals there but given the benefits of living on an island that doesn't have a lot of the diseases that are in Europe and the US I get the enforcement of restrictions as frustrating and expensive as they are to deal with.

Enjoy the rain - you only have it for 5 or 6 weeks rather than 5 or 6 months.

"Rainy season" doesn't necessarily apply to Danang where the HIM is. Central Vietnam has a different rainy season (winter) and more erratic weather in general. Have been afraid to look at what's going on there. At least it's not typhoon season, which would be fall!

Allergies crushed me from January to March this year. Seemed worse this year than usual. Ended up buying a Respro Ultralight mask so I could ride outdoors. Hated running with the mask though.

Thanks everyone for the inspires and kudos in the last few months. Thanks for all the great words and support, it is super important to me. My son is doing great, can't wait for the summer (one more month of school!) I am back to the training, I re-installed Strava and started putting some workout in there
No triathlons this season, but some other challenges: marathon on trail and 100 miles on mountain bike, so this year will be adventurous.

I don't remember if I mentioned, but I am reaching my final decision of moving to Colorado next year... Hoping to cheer IM Boulder participants )))

Cant' wait to be back to your stories, probably won't be able to keep up, but will try have a great week everyone!

Good to see you back!

So I'll be going home to Germany next week until early June. My training is going to suffer as the primary goal for the trip is to see family (though one of my uncles passed away last weekend. Was hoping he would hang on until we get over there) and have some fun times with the kids. I will not have access to a bike though I should be able to run some and maybe get a swim or two in. I'll have 3 weeks after getting back to get ready for my "A" race which I'm using to fundraise for the GBS/CIDP Foundation. Just hope the trip doesn't set me back to far.

Anyone have any good tips on how to maintain at least while vacationing?

For me, runs are the only thing I can squeeze in on a trip. It's fun to explore new areas, but I get turned around easily so I usually check the Map My Run app and look for already-established routes near me that I can follow.

Other than that, I try my best to relax on vacation - that's what it's for! There's plenty of time when you get back to get back in the swing of training. Sometimes a long brisk walk or "hike" can get the blood flowing so you have some sort of activity, just not a structured piece of training. Those are fun too!

OMG.  What a cluster fagoozie.  Hope things get back on track quickly.

Get your workouts done first thing, before the day gets busy.  Make it a 3 week run focus
