There is a thread over on TT about a guy asking if he was losing too much weight cause he is getting a lot of comments from folks about being too skinny.  I get comments as well about folks telling me I don't need to lose any weight etc etc.  Its so weird cause I know what skinny is and I just think to myself "WTF".  It is like, do they want you to fail?  Do they want to feel better about themselves by making sure you don't get lean?  I don't get it.  Anyways, just a thread that for some reason is really bothering me.  Just rambling.

Off to Phoenix today so not sure I'll get in any training. Bunch of stuff on the agenda but one is heading to PT to see what they can do about my shoulder.  Many years ago a skier pile drived me into the slopes (hitting me from behind) and my shoulder has been really messed up since then.  If I don't use it much it's ok but swimming and strength training really brings out the pain.

I've (re)started reading some threads on TT, but very selectively, and that's one I skipped...

I get the 'eat a donut' comment a lot too, when I know that I've got an easy 5lbs to lose and I'm probably 10lbs from true race weight.  I've dedicated this month to getting somewhere in that ballpark, which will be a challenge at Thanksgiving.

Good luck with the shoulder!

In my opinion, it's a bad idea.  You're going to take a couple of weeks (at least) to recover from the marathon, right at the same time you're peaking for your HIM.  I think you'll be shooting yourself in the foot.

I actually commented in that one - just cause I'm on the light side.  I'm actually okay with my body size, I just wish there was a way to lose some of the "hollow" look in my face a bit.  I don't know how you add a bit of weight to your face!!  My training has really fallen off since finishing my HIM, and my eating has not been fantastic, and I've managed to gain a whopping 3lbs.  It really is a case of me staying close to the same weight all the time regardless of what I seem to do.

I'm planning to start lifting some weights to see if I can add a couple of pounds.  Besides, we all squats will make you a better climber.  Laughing

I am pulling the trigger on a new watch too, the 310xt.  I have had my 305 for 4-5 years and it is looking a little dated...it will not upload workouts to Garmin but otherwise has been/still is a good watch..its my birthday/Christmas present from the wife.

I am going with the 310 though...$200 brand new.  I guess I am the outcast of the group .

I've got the 310 and like it.  Does the trick.  Had the 305 before that and my wife still does.  310 is nice to have power unlike 305 in case you don't have another bike computer or it goes bad or won't upload.  Maybe not as fancy but good for me.

Claw, Neil is right.  Bad idea.  If you are looking to do well in either race.  Just prioritize and know what you think your wanting to get out of those races and why you are doing them.  If you try to tackle that, you will undoubtedly perform way below potential in both races because you will not be properly prepared for either of them IMO.  If you don't care and just want to do the races, than that's fine too, but just know why you are doing what you're doing so you don't disappoint yourself.

Neil, saw you may do some strength work.  Just so happens I have that plan from ST that the D1 strength and conditioning coach was passing around from Brown Univ.  I threw it up on Google Drive for the group if you'd like to take a look.

At first glance, it looks pretty good.  Not sure I have the time to dedicate to it myself but was interested in it from when I use to do a lot more of that sort of thing.  Read the intro to see how it works.

Well, it's not up there with sending your bank account information to a Nigerian who needs to transfer 7.5 million to the U.S., but it's still a pretty bad idea.

Nope. I have a 310 and love it. I have a 310 and a swimsense. I am just combining the two in the 910.

This is going to sound silly, but I need to duplicate my training stuff in two cities, so I bought the 910. I will leave the 310 in one city and the 910 in the other

Living in two cities makes it tough. I always forget something. Watch, HRM, charger, shoes, helmets, pumps.........Then you get to the other city and you are screwed

That kind of bugs me too. It's just not really appropriate to make comments about body size in general. I mean, it wouldn't be OK to say to someone at work "Hey, you look like you gained weight, put down that donut". I rarely notice body weight/composition in other people, if they are healthy and happy, who cares?

I thought it was really ironic on the ST boards where people get persecuted for doing strength training to have 300 posts requesting the strength workout from that guy LOL.  I was kind of shocked by how well that took off for him.

Thanks Jason - I actually PM'd him on ST and he sent it to me...

I cleaned up my gym area a little bit so i can try and motivate myself to start lifting some weights.  I used to enjoy it, but it's fallen by the wayside since starting Tri's.

I have been doing pushups lately - managed 70 this morning (broken into 4 sets).  I used to be decent at pullups as well, so that's something I'd like to do again.  I think there is certainly benefit to all around strength, and it's something I'm missing at the moment, but would like to add back in.

I agree with the bad idea jeans assessment.

I swam with the swim team this morning. Apparently it was swim paraphernalia day. We did a set of 10x75 with a drag chute as well as 18x100 using paddles and fins. The only normal swimming I did was in the warmup and cooldown!

That kind of bugs me too. It's just not really appropriate to make comments about body size in general. I mean, it wouldn't be OK to say to someone at work "Hey, you look like you gained weight, put down that donut".

That's because we fat people create the illusion of being able to hurt you if you say something like that. You may out run me, but if I catch you by surprise, you don't want me sitting on you.

OK, in all seriousness, I have been on one side of this issue for a very long time, and hope to be on the other soon. Actually, as I mentioned in that main thread, I've already had two people tell me I shouldn't lose more weight. At 250+. They remember me at 365. When I get below 200 their heads wil explode.

I'm going to try a comparison that may or may not work, and I hope it does not offend. There is a social phenomenon that we all recognize when it comes to jokes or comments based on race. I am a white male. I recognize the inherent priviledge and advantage that gives me. I am not going to entertain the argument that political correctness has made it so so hard to be white. Nonsense. I refer you to my favorite cultural critic on the matter: very nsfw or easily offended folks. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=TG4f9zR5yzY&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv...

Anyway, I can quote that joke/routine. I cannot do the same for this one (same disclaimers) http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/81670714/

So, right or wrong, there is a perception or assumption that I think people operate with, about weight. The fat person is, historically, the less powerful. The fat kid certainly got picked on more in school than the skinny kid, even we grow up to reverse the roles in adulthood. So comics like Louie Anderson can do fat jokes, but when Ricky Gervais does it, it comes off very very mean, even if accurate.

I as a fat guy, can ge away with the crack about sitting on you, above. If you said it to me, we had better be really really good friends with a history of that kind of thing.

So, my assessment is this: right or wrong, people look at a thin, lean, fit person as someone who has it all together, and has the advantage socially. It is therefore considered acceptable for the fat person to ridicule a thin person, while it is not ok for the thin person to call out the fat person.

I am, personally, ok with black comics doing racial material, using words that a white comic should not. I have also been ok with the kind of humor that says "hey man eat a sandwich will you?"

I am growing less comfrtable with it though. I think the pendulum is swinging. I don't want fat kids, or adults, to be bullied. But nor can I handle the agenda of the fat acceptance movement, at least from the main advocacy group. Obesity is not like race. It is controllable. And it is not ok. It may be that only people who have been fat will get a voice in calling out those who need to change. I want to be someone who fills that role to a degree. But someone has to say it.

This is an issue of great imporance to me, and when I can oranize this random mishmash of thoughts better, it is something I plan to write about repeatedly on my blog. Thee is a part of me that hears the fit person saying "hey don't criticize my body shape" and thinks "oh wow, you have it SO tough" with eye rolling sarcasm. But I confess that is not right on my part amd the more time I spend around fit people I want to aspire to be like, it's not just look or shape, it's attitude, it's lifestyle, it's behavior. I don't wat to become like an ex-smoker who is a real jerk to current smokers. But I want to find a way to speak the truth about where I've been, where I still am, and how I can call it out as unacceptable while not diminishing my worth as a human being. There are some people who will only hear it from someone who has been where they are.

Crap. Well, in my defense I'm crazy busy. (Definitely crazy). And I did finally notice.

Still full-on with the IM cram and it's going surprisingly well. My dad's probably in his last few months but we've been saying that for forty years ... in any case, he's being a holy terror and insisting everyone else work 24/7 to get HIS goals done before he dies ... um ... isn't that what YOUR life was for? So I've got his work, my own work, trying to make sure my mom gets cared for all right, training ... egads!

I'll be flying back and forth Jakarta-Bali probably every week for a while (frankly, it's kind of been that way for a while already). I hear ya Marc on the two-cities thing!

Yup.

I guarantee, no matter how you do the marathon, goal time, none, it could be Honolulu and you could waddle it in two days ... halfway if not sooner through the HIM running part, your legs will just STOP. That's it. They will go on strike, go no further, and that's just that.

Not because I know anything about that kind of thing. Innocent

x3

The required amount of run training for a marathon will kill your HIM training.  Then the amount of recovery post marathon you'll need will kill your HIM.  Definately doable for some people...but you won't get anywhere close to a goal time.  Right now I'm capable of a 5:15ish HIM.  If I were to do a marathon 5 weeks before (for S&G's), I'd likely need to change my HIM goal time to about 5:45 or worse.

Not sure if you called them yet or not but I did a quick Google search and it sure looks like it should work with you problem.  I found lots of posts from people (including on BT and ST) saying it should just work.
