Trying to WO but the new job is very demanding. Lots of responsibility, budgets, people reporting to me, and all that. I am really trying to rehab my knee and get my weight back to a reasonable level. Hope you are all well, and having a great season.

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? This is what happens when you post before coffee. Ha! Love ya, J! No racing for me. Supposed to be beautiful all week, then rain all weekend again here. Blah! My biggest in between meal eating problems come between dinner and breakfast. I do fine during the day (almonds, light popcorn, carrots, fruit), but far too many nights I sit in front of the tv and snack on junk calories (#$&* thin mints!!).

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? I'm a big-time grazer, for better or for worse. I don't eat at "traditional" times for breakfast and lunch, as I squeeze in exercise, usually, after getting kids off to school. So, breakfast is late (always a pre-workout snack though), and then lunch is late. And then I graze before dinner. I usually like a salty graze -- peanut butter pretzels, trail mix, sometimes fruit (apples w/cinnamon or peanut butter). If I'm focusing on being super healthy, I keep hard-boiled eggs at the ready. Often there will be a handful of chips for a salt fix, but hardly ever more than a few. If I have some leftover veggies in the frige (roasted, steamed, whatever), I munch on those, cold, for a snack. And I usually grab a sweet bit in the afternoon... a square of dark chocolate, a few peanut m&ms, a half of a brownie -- it depends on what we have around. But we usually have sweet things at the ready. |

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? Good luck to any racers!!! I have taken to bringing my Greek yogurt and granola to work for my midday snack. Otherwise, too tempting to run next door for an egg roll or something unhealthy like a bag of chips. I also love just a big spoonful of my almond butter when I am at home and hungry. One thing that I have started having with my breakfast is a tablespoon of chia seeds soaked in almond milk which I then mix into my yogurt or hot oatmeal and it really keeps me from getting hungry before lunch. Makes the 3-4 hrs between breakfast and lunch a little more tolerable from a hunger standpoint. If Suzy had come over to the house she could have seen all of the snacks we have that I try to avoid, including cheez-its and fritos. I do like pretzles (sp?), and think they are a better salty snack and they go fabulously with the almond butter. |

Expert 1797 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed So question for the group. What do you do about hunger? How many of you spend time during the day being hungry even after meals? I swear I spend most of the day hungry and/or thinking about my next meal. It seems to range from tolerable, dull I'm a bit hungry to OMG I can't concentrate at my desk hungry. It seems to me that a lot of the people I know who are fit don't eat that much or at least not as much or as often as I eat. I'm trying to get to a happy weight and it's really hard to not eat when you are hungry all of the time. Does anyone else feel my pain? |

No racing for me... as far as in between meal snack - that happens mostly at work. Maybe some trail mix. Definitely have a 'nanar before lunch time workout. I do get the munchies in the afternoons so I am trying to keep more healthful options available... |

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? If I could walk, I would race, but since I can't, I'll just eat! When I am being healthy, it's homemade granola in greek yogurt, an apple with peanut butter or a low carb wrap with lettuce, turkey and cheese. When I am not, it's usually something out of a bag or box (crackers, chocolate chips, honey roasted nuts, etc,) which is oh-so bad because it lacks nutrients. Like Kyla, nothing is off limits in our house, but I do try to have limits on how much I snarf at a time, especially if I'm not working out much. Like Now! PS. Sam, I'm rarely hungry because i eat frequently. After I've eaten a real meal, I'm not hungry and I think that has a lot to do with making sure I take in fat and protein with my meals. Of course that doesn't usually stop me from eating something sweet! |

I liked Suzy's reply to this and pretty much echo her sentiments. I'm rarely hungry. Mid to late afternoon I tend to nosh as I bustle around the kitchen... bad, but it's more habit than hunger that drives me to nibbles at that time of day. That said, I don't snarf much. I don't try to, but I think I eat a fair amount of fiber, and I know that can help stave off hunger. I also drink coffee, but not tons. I have a cup in the morning, first thing, and then usually a cup after breakfast. More in the afternoon on really stormy or really hot days (iced in the summer!!), but I don't drink it every afternoon. I drink herbal tea most afternoons in the winter as well. Finally, I carry water with me everywhere. I carry around a 1L bottle and am mindful to drink two of those a day, and I try to drink more if I have a big workout planned the next day or am recovering from a big effort. I used to avoid fats and really be mindful about every mouthful, but I've really lightened up over the years (my kids are so picky that it was just not worth it to fight food battles and make every available morsel a healthy option). My motto is everything in moderation, even moderation. That means splurges are OK, just not all the time. I cook with more fat than I used to (used to be all about the non-stick pan, now I'm all about the olive oil), and that does help satiate me, and I think food tastes better (for the kids). All this said, I'm not trying to lose weight. Yeah, I could lose 5 pounds it would probably be good for me, but where I am is where I am and I rarely step on a scale. When I do it's within a 3-pound range. (I do step on scales over the holidays because I can be a victim of a few pounds of slow-creep-weight-gain November-January.) It's taken me decades to feel OK about my body -- and really, I'm not there yet, but it's not a constant battle for me or something I obsess about. I don't like the way parts of my body look, but it's who I am and my body does great things for me, so I try to appreciate it more than criticize it. |

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? No racing, just a 3 hour long run and 5.5hr long ride... I'll be glad to see the back of these weekends! I'm pretty good about snacking but I was having a yoghurt at work mid-morning as a "healthy" snack. I had one yesterday and decided to read the ingredients and it contained 26g of sugar per pot!!! WTF! |

No racing here. I will grab a handful of almonds or walnuts mid-morning and sometimes an equal amount of raisins to go with them. Mid-afternoon (2 or 3) I will have a small Japanese-type sweet with my coffee. Late afternoon before I head out to swim I will grab something that gives me protein/fat/carb - 100 or so calories. For appetite suppression you really do need the protein and fat factors. Carb only will have you hungry again much sooner. |

Veteran 256 Madison,AL | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hey all, I had a 51 min run yesterday called out in my plan. I planned on doing it at 345 am, that didnt work due to poor directions from the previous days ride. I decided I would do it after work and school. I really did not feel like going but knew i needed to. I got dressed and worked my way out the door. I started running and still wasnt sure if I was going to do the whole thing or not. At mile one I was like just make it to mile2 or you have 4 more vibrations you can do this. I used this the whole time while I was running. I dont have many long runs under my belt but I PR the 5 miles. I was also right at 10 or under the whole time. The laps are in my training log since work wont let me use a hyperlink. |
