Rudy...I'll give you bad advice and suggest that you race the TT.  I've got more bike racing genes than triathlon genes (as I imagine you do)...so bike racing (especially a state championship) takes priority over a B race tri.

Your HIM performance will suffer...but given your strength on the bike, your abiltiy to recover from it will not be as penalizing as others who are not as strong as you.  So long as you pace yourself accordingly, I think you'll be fine.  You've got people who did all 4 races of the Triple T last weekend...so it's not impossible.  It just depends on what is important to you.

Thoughts from the long course athletes.

The CT State TT champs are the day before Rev3, it is 10 miles and about 500ft climbing. I usually get a hard mixed tempo ride in prior to a race to wake the legs up and open the muscles up.

What are your thoughts on doing the TT, it should take about 22-25 mins, and i am really using Rev3 as a set up for Patriot, i would love to say i am not "racing" Rev3, but that would be a lie, i race every race.

I wouldn't.

Agree, I would not.

Rudy, is this the HIM where you were talking about how difficult the course is?? Or is it the other.  Because if the HIM course was as challenging as you mentioned - definitely wouldn't recommend the TT - which you admit you'll race both.

Up to you though?

Yeah, it is the hard one, which is the only reason i am thinking about it and not just doing it, lol.

I will think about how bad i wanna do well at Quassy, but in all reality, even though two exceptional athletes say it is a bad idea, i will probably do it anyway.  I currently hold the CT state Crit title for Cat 4, so if i ended up winning the TT title, i would hold 2 of the 3 titles at one time.  I will see how i feel at the end of this week.

Thanks for the replies and thoughts Brian, Fred, Jason and Jen!!

Fred D - 2012-05-23 4:43 PM Had a nice little hill climb ride on the road bike. I am honestly enjoying the road bike more than the try bike this year. It's fun!!

i love my road bikes, i ride them 95% of the time anymore.

Roadie is by far my favorite.

Decent swim last night, starting salt water OWS tomorrow morning.  That is the best because it is mostly the masters guys from the local "Y", they kick my butt all over the sound, and i get more than 35-40 mins of boring pool work in.

Had a good run this AM, little 4.5.  Funny how i say little, as 4 years ago i couldn't run 45 yards, let alone 4.5 miles.

This is a season of reflection for me, these will be my last two long course races and pretty much triathlon for me. I will do a small local race or two a year still, i have too many friends i want to see, but as far as training and such, i am pretty much finished.

I will mainly bike race, ride my bikes a lot, and train the other things when i want, not because i have to do it, like it is now. For me, that is no fun, and i have probably posted to a 100 threads about why do something if it isn't fun??

Funny thing is, i hated running when i first started, and just kinda dealt with it the last couple years, then Bryan and I sat down for a beer in Greenwich CT one night when he was back visiting family, and he asked "do you LIKE running??" "really really like it??"   Personally i think i gave him a text book half a$$ed answer, but as i reflected on the question, and really started to think about it, yes, in some ways i really enjoy running, but not how i am doing it now. I hate long runs, hate having to run 4-5 times a week to even be somewhat competitive around here. I would love to run 3-4 miles 2-3-4 times a week, whenever i feel like it, enjoy it and not care what pace i am at or how much harder i will have to go to do good in a race. No schedule, no plan, no stress, no worries.

I really do enjoy the race mornings and the people i see again, that will be the hardest thing to give up, the rest...meh

Hope everyone's enjoying their coffee

Rudy - sounds like you have figured out what works for you, and more specifically what you get the most enjoyment from.  Lots of people aren't that lucky, and are determined to stick to something even when they realize it's not quite as fun as they meant it to be.  And that's the whole point of this - it's a hobby, and we better be enjoying it or why do it?

So, I think I've sorted out the bike situation.

Blue is offering me a great deal on a 2011 Triad SP - which I've been drooling over since I found out they were a Rev3 sponsor.

My boyfriend offered to help me pay for the bike initially, and I'll pay him back once I'm employed again. (FYI: We live together. We share expenses, but keep everything separate. I helped him pay off surgery bills on time, and he's paying me back in the form of covering my part of the rent. So, this is a good idea!)

I'm stuck between an XS and a S. For any of you who are into bike fits, here's the geometry. http://www.rideblue.com/bikearchive.php?state=triadsp. Here is me on a 52cm bike (on 650c's): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCPHVS8wE58

I got measured at TriSports and was told I'd be a 51cm, but I've got a short torso... hence me leaning toward the XS (50cm top tube, vs 51cm for the S). In reality, I'm pretty sure I'm smack in the middle.

I'm trying to get to a Blue dealer, but there aren't any locally... and inventory on the 2011s are running low.

I promise, after this, my bike drama should be over!

Good morning!

I am tired and a little in a pickle about how to get my sleep back in order so i can wake up for morning workouts. I am sure i'll work it out eventually but it means i have a 75-minute bike and a t-run tonight.

I got some more good feedback on my swim stroke last night - apparently i don't finish my stroke completely so i worked on that.  Man, i still suck but I just keep going.    I'll make it and take it all in stride.

Elaine: oooh very exciting bike choices.  I can't look at the video to comment (youtube is blocked at work) but good luck with the choice.  I got a really small frame bike too and it seems to be good.

Rudy: makes sense.  And it doesn't mean you can come back to it.  Like Neil said, this is a hobby and whatever you enjoy you should do.

Oh and very excited because a few people from my swim group went up to Mon Tremblant this past weekend and reported on the road and race set up and were really positive.  They were saying the roads were in excellent condition (surprising for Quebec) and that the route is well marked.  Apparently the section with the 12% grade is about 10k of mostly uphill which was draining.  One girl had a choice description of the hills but other than that they were really positive.  It's really cool to know the community is really behind both races (the 70.3 and the 140.6).

I just got this in my email.

Congratulations James Rokowski. You have qualified for the 2012 USA Triathlon Olympic Distance National Championship after finishing in the top 10 percent in your age group at the Cascade Lake Triathlon & Duathlon.

So there is a chance................Wink

Rudy...I HEAR YOU!!!  In fact, after my HIM, I'm devoting myself to bike racing for the next 18 months.  I'll run and swim when I feel like it...and probably do 1 or 2 local tris just to see how fast a bike split I can post.

I do however plan to focus more on tris later down the road.  I do like to swim and run, but I don't like to grind at it year after year.  After 3 straight years of S/B/R...I think it's time I devoted one year to my passion...the bike.

While that guy's post was clearly off...it did bring up good discussion in the thread.  To actually practice with the nutrition that will be provided on course.  I don't mind a little debate in the forums...even if it's silly.  Chances are there is someone lurking though that actually learned something from the debate.

Swam for the first time yesterday since my race and shoulder injury.  I purposely took it easy, but the weird thing was that my left shoulder was fine...my right shoulder started to feel the same pain (very slight) after about 1500 yards.  I shut it down right there.

Pretty weird.  I look back though and my left shoulder is actually the shoulder I hurt in a bike crash 2 years ago.  Needed some PT for it, but I forgot about that.  My right shoulder I hurt in college 12 years ago lifting weights...so I do have some history.

I think it's just a slight overuse issue though, and I'll be fine by June 2nd.
