Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I also wanted to mention to everyone. During my long run today, I heard a horrible story. About 8 guys in my training group did IMLOU. Not sure what hotel they stayed at but Saturday when they were eating lunch in the hotel lobby they heard some guy getting quite load with the front desk. Next, they noticed the guy was the guy staying in the hotel room next to them. When they asked him what was the matter he said he had all his SNB's and transitions bags laid out on the bed and started stuffing everything in them. Some stuff was in, and some was still out. He went down to eat some lunch and when he returned all his bags were missing. Housekeeping came in and threw them all away thinking they were trash. Lesson: always keep your bags hidden or the do not disturb sign on your door. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Actually in Georgia this summer I sweat so much and ran around so much in sopping wet socks and shoes that I decided to buy a second pair of shoes to switch into midway through the run (special needs)... Last week was pretty massive volume for me. swim 11,200 yards, bike 235 miles, and run 32.4. I am just staying ahead of the injury bug. This week looks pretty rough too (planned 12k, 210 mi, and 35 mi) but then an easier taper week leading to Augusta. I am sure you all are working hard too. This stuff is really taxing and I am now wondering why I registered for IMCDA in June 2011. As much as I am keen on it, there won't be much downtime before it all starts over again. WAAAAAAAAAAANH! |

Nice work, way to get it done! That is a good idea about the 2nd pair in special needs! Last IM I had extra socks, but it was raining so I didn't bother with them. If I had the 2nd shoes, I might have changed. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm right there with everyone on the sweat fest. This summer has been strange. Not as many days over 100 but the ones we had were brutal (105+) and the humidity levels have been much worse. After my 2 hour run Sunday morning I was dripping and it was only 75 degrees. Didn't even need to ring things out to get a puddle. And yes, the socks are soaked after the run. And after how wet my shorts were, the thought crossed my mind to put new shorts and socks in special needs! I just keep telling myself that is HAS to be cooler in Florida in November. Right????? |

It will be quite cool. I've done IMFL 3 times and its not been and issue and trust me when I say I am the queen of sweat. No wet shoes or socks. |

New user 11 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Hi Gravesjo, How did you do yesterday? I also was at that race, taking about 40 mins off my previous best. Still stoked! I liked the amount of volunteers on the course and the schwag (a T-shirt, technical shirt, and a visor). Merchandise was reasonably priced. The bike course was quite choppy in some spots, and the wind made the course more challenging than it would have been otherwise. Downtown Sandusky (the run course) is not exactly scenic... My daughter wants me to do the race again, basically for the theme park. I would definitely recommend trying Rev3 as an alternative to Ironman events. |

So, my fingers know the drill! Good luck everyone!!! I bet active.com doesn't sell Phish tickets though.... 90% of the problem is that active.com's site cannot handle the volume. Be ready BEFORE it opens...it will generally open a few minutes early and that's the time to get in without hassle. Last time I tried to register for one of these I would get all the way through the process then active.com would crash and I would have to keep doing it over and over! That's exactly what happened to me trying to sign up for IMLP last month. I'd fill out the 40 questions hit next button and Active would freeze. I must of gotten one error code 404 100x. I was on line 20' early and it did not open early at all. Finally I got in and about 3' later it closed. It was annoying to think I was on line on time to register and I'd have to pay extra $600 for community fund slot since Active crashes...glad I didn't give up as I figured it would fill before 34' after it opened. My sister and I are from the midwest, and want to do IMFL 2011, together. Does anyone know if there is a cancellation policy if one of us gets 'in' and the other doesn't, through the on-line registration? Also, we are wondering about the organization of the race. Are all Ford IM races well run? (Very familiar with IMWI which is awesome!) (one more) What can you tell us about ocean swim vs lake swim? Thank you so much!! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread If you cancel you get $150 of your ~$605 back. If one gets in and other doesn't the one that doesn't could get a community fund slot for $1100. IMFL has not sold out within minutes last few years more like couple hours. Race is on central time zone so I'd be ready to register when it opens up on 11/7. IMFL has a new race director this year. IM brand races have same flavor at most venues but slight variances based on the location. PCB is a tourist area so not as many locals support as many are temporary residents as some other type of locations. Plus is lots of hotels and condos at cheap prices and the new PCB airport has opened so easier to get to on cheaper airlines now that SWA flies there. |

Happy training everyone!! I did a sweat rate test about a month ago on the run. I lost 100oz of fluid in 60 min. I bet i am up there with all of you. I did a double marathon this year in July (really hot) and I changed shoes 3 times and socks 5 times. It helped a little, but by 2-3 miles after changing, both the socks and shoes were soaked again. But like they said....Hopefully the warmest it will get is low 70's and it shouldn't be that humid. I will put an extra pair of socks in my SN on the run just in case. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread What would you do? I missed my long run yesterday. It was supposed to be 20 km which is my furthest run since my half IM in June (have done 18 km a few times). Next week I am supposed to do 18 km again (after a 1 hour bike ride) and the week after I’m going up to 25 km. I’m thinking it isn’t a good idea for me to completely miss the workout and today is my normal rest day, so I could do something after work tonight. (I worked through lunch so I would be able to start running at 5 pm). Do I do the full 20? Do I cut it back and do 18 this week instead and do 20 as part of next weeks brick instead? Do I skip the run altogether? It was one of those “life gets in the way” kind of weekends. One of my good friends from university got married on Saturday and during the reception I decided I would stay and visit with friends I haven’t seen in a long time rather than go to bed early to get my run in (we hade to drive 5 hours back on Sunday). Couldn’t fit it in later in the day because we stopped to visit my MIL (who has been a bit depressed lately) and a family friend of DH’s who is in Canada until Tuesday and he hasn’t seen for 7.5 years. I don’t regret my decisions, I just need to figure out what to do |

Member 49 Toronto | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Hi All, I've been absent for a long while, work, lack of training and just life.... I was able to last minute registed for Muskoka 70.3 (cancelled business trip overseas). Race was yesterday, so Saturday headed north into the hills... first test after a bike tunup, which I quickly found issues with, that took time I hadn't planned for. Got that sorted out only to have the sidewall blow out on the ride to transition. Got that fixed and just hoped that was it for the little black cloud crap. I needed this race, all others planned were cancelled due to work committments and it's been a six year layoff, happilly and proudly coaching my boys hockey and Lacrosse teams. IMFL as the first back wasn't feeling right. Race day started early as they do, it was to rain all day but most fell overnight which made for a slick ride but thats the way it goes. it only rained about four times during my race time, really just enough to keep the ride slick and cool the run down. The little black clound left me alone, hurray!!, swim went as well as it can with a recently seperated shoulder, bike went well albeit there is not one flat piece of realestate on the 95k route, yes 95 not 90. It's interesting having to re-learn to race while having a training day. Run went much better then expected, i think it's even lumpier then the ride. All in all the day finish really well. I'm pleased with my 6:06 time, considering it was a training day, no watch, no computer. Most importantly, I finished without issue and/or injury with lots left in the tank, no lactic acid buildup and feeling better about IMFL. Now to find a place to stay. take care all! |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Last week was taper for a theoretical 1/2 IM that was supposed to be this weekend. I like taper! I live and train in the deserts of West Texas, and I can relate to leaving sweat footprints. BUT this weekend a group of us went to northern New Mexico for a century ride. At ride off time it was 28 degrees, but the sun was shining. I had an awesome centruy in the beautiful mountains (~6000 ft of climbing). By mid afternoon it was up to about 70 degrees. I even got a little run in after 7.5 hrs on the bike. Sunday on the way home I stopped for an OWS and got 4000 yds in. I couldn't believe how easy it was. The swim was a real confidence builder. I think I like working out after a week of taper. Only Five more weeks of peak training then the taper starts! |

Got me thinking that we haven't done anything on BT shirts for us. Do we still want to do that? There isn't much time. I know we were looking for hot pink tech shirts, but they are not to be found. I know there was a IM logo that incorporated the BT logo posted on here a while back that could be used. Thoughts? Suggestions? Forget about it? |

Just my humble opinion I have hit most of my workouts and in the last two months I have missed one bike, no runs and a few swims due to back issues. The swimming is my strongest discipline, so I'm not worried about a few missed workouts. It was either take a break from swimming or jeopardize my back problems messing with my bike and run training. I don't think I have actually missed a run workout since I was sick back in February, so I guess I can afford to have the day off. I think I will switch next sunday to a 1 hour bike/20 km run brick though (run was supposed to be 18 km) to make sure I don't jump up to 25 km and get hurt. |

I agree one workout isn't going to make or break your IM. |

Regular 171 Madison, AL | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread No kidding about the just move along part. I've had a terrible couple of weeks. I apologize for the upcoming rant, but maybe somebody might find some humor in my situation. Was set up to do a local oly two weekends ago. Saturday (day before the race), I'm out ref'ing my kids soccer game, 3 minutes into first quarter roll my ankle. Can barely walk, definitly can't run. Hobble over to packet pickup that afternoon, run into a tri buddy that isn't doing the race but is volunteering. Ask him if he wants to do a relay. I'll swim and bike and he'll run. RD signs off on it everything is cool. Sunday, go out to the race. Have a great swim. Start about 40 from the front, come out about 20th position. Hope on the bike. Whole time I'm thinking, "Be careful on the turns, you've got IMFL in 2 months, but haul on the flats as my race is over in about an hour". About 21 miles into the 25 mile bike a massive pothole comes out of nowhere. I'm being passed on the left at the exact wrong moment, I can't move over. Pothole bounces me off my bike. I go down hard, I'm skidding along the asphalt on my back looking at the sky and out of nowhere I see my tri bike go pinwheeling over me. Oh No! Long story short, bike is ok, but my shoulder is so stiff that I haven't swum since the race. So, now I can't run (cause of ankle). I can't swim (cause of shoulder). I give the body about 4 days to start feel better and do a 60 mile ride. Everything feels fine. Fast forward another week, and I'm thinking well, since I'm not swimming and and only barely running, now's a good time to be hitting the bike pretty hard. I do a 6hr LSB this past Friday with 5 mile brick. Everything went pretty well. A couple of hours later I happen to bump my elbow (on the uninjured arm), and it feels like somebody hit it with a hammer. Ouch! Bursitis. Everything is pointing to "Don't put pressure on the elbow", as in "Don't use your aerobars". Ugh. I can only imagine that during the ride I compensated for my hurt shoulder by putting more pressure on my non-injured elbow. Now my ankle is back to about 90%, I hope to be swimming by end of week, and my bike is back to nowhere with the bursitis. I've been healthy for the better part of a year, and now 2 months out from my 1st IM, I'm breaking down like a freakin' old man. Argh!!! Thanks for listening to me vent. |

I started back running and riding the trainer a few days ago. Things are going well. It may be a while before I will be back in the pool or outside on the bike. Once the road rash heals up then I should be good to go. I'm afraid to get back into the pool until everything has scabbed over and closed up. Last thing that I need is an infection. Thanks Catwoman. My HIM went pretty good. I kind of went into it we an experimental attitude kind just seeing what happened. I didn't want to push anything since this was my first as this distance. On the bike I was feeling so good and mainting a pace that I usual don't maintain so I just went with it. On the run I was feeling fresh and so just really enjoyed getting in the groove. Im breathing a sigh of relief having done it and knowing that I can do it again. My time was 5:15. (swim pace - 1:56 bike - 18.9mph run - 7:11 min/mile)My dad expects me to do Florida in exactly twice at time. I some how have to get it through his head that I'd doesn't work that way. |
