Kingsley and I are both pretty shattered. His swim squad (was one of the best in the country, and therefore world; several Olympic champions and a crapton of awesome national pool, open-water and triathlon swimmers have come out of it) has disbanded. It's been a central--the central--part of his life for 30 years. (Horrific mismanagement over the last few years, so no good reason). Due to his disability, he has no easy access to any other squad's training times or facilities.

My home country has gone to hell in a handbasket. More has happened than I can quickly write, but other than the fact that the state keeps trying to kill off my friends who are unprecedented national servants, and imprisoning 100% innocent friends on pretenses so false the whole country and world know it, my sister's and other relatives' personal safety has come under direct risk as well. I genuinely might not survive another bout of dengue or multidrug-resistant typhoid.

Given that my dad was a founding father of the country and many of its great institutions (and my mom some too!), and that I'd planned (and Kingsley too, happily at the time) to spend the rest of my life living in, loving and serving it ... this is very difficult for me.

So we're regrouping. My sister Tina and I will be buying a house in Germany this summer and slowly moving to spend more time abroad (with Perth as an interim base since it's fairly close to Jakarta).

Yanti, you're definitely deserving of some peace, and I hope you find it in Germany.

3 are upgrading and the rest are quitting.  A large group did IM Chattanooga and there was a huge burnout after that.  A few of them have taken up crossfit that haven't sold their bikes, so I imagine some more will be up for sale later, but trying to do it right now just isn't happening.  It's crazy!

I'm here. We drove the MIL up to Milwaukee yesterday to see her sister and I tried to get in a long run along the lake but weather and time cut it short I'm super bummed about both the missed run and the missed opportunity to run along the lake. Today is the big day! Then tomorrow we wait at Ohare ALL DAY with DS2 for an afternoon flight... no telling if that'll be on time. Here's a pic from my shortened long run

I hope that you are having a great visit!

I'm really sorry that you and Kingsley are both facing obstacles.  It sucks that his swim squad disbanded due to mismanagement.  There are no two ways about it.  I hope that he can find/create another group to fill the void.

It's also disheartening to hear that your country has not pulled out of the tailspin that started a short while ago.  I mean, it's not like innocent people have never been executed in the US but you'd better be pretty darn sure before executing someone. There's no coming back from that one.

I am glad to hear that your sister is looking into moving somewhere safer (and super glad that you are already somewhere safer).  Was Germany selected because of Mutti?  Will Kingsley be joining you in Germany?

{{hugs}} I know that we are all thinking of you!

Much thanks NyNy. {MP}

Kingsley will find a way. You don't get to where he's gotten to and been without being a stubborn barsted (Stace Face will back me up on this!) The many squadmates he's close to, they'll stay close (many had already left and they are still close). Coaching and training himself (and I do provide thoughtful input which he takes maybe 5-10% of the time, which is approximately 100x more than I take my own advice) will be a new adventure and force him to grow in ways previously not possible.

Yeah the police and judiciary are way beyond out of control, as policy; horrifying/ridiculous cases are the norm, not the exception ... people in Indonesia are getting prosecuting for PRIVATE MESSAGES regarding PRIVATE RELATIONSHIPS on Facebook!!! (and it's nothing criminal ... they're getting done under a slander law. Now TWO women are in jail because they said in PMs to friends that their husbands were abusing them. Because they couldn't prove the abuse, THEY ARE THE ONES GOING TO JAIL). Again, not exceptions. Most prosecutions now come down to who's paying to have it prosecuted and who benefits from damages/payouts.

Indonesia has been through some crazy crazy times but it has never been like this. Not under the most draconian of dictatorship laws. We're out! Hope it gets better and we'll do everything we can at a distance.

Germany was selected because I'm eligible for German citizenship (and will be taking it). With that and buying land, Tina will also be eligible first for residency, then citizenship, and eventually Kingsley too if he wants it (Germany also has very kind laws regarding foreigners). We're also very close to our German family there.

Nope, Mutti wants to stay in Jakarta--that's home and that's it. If the country gets so unstable that she's at personal risk (who would fach with a little old demented lady, I say that now, but it seems anything's possible ), we would like to have that base in Germany and access to care for her.

So for the time being Tina and I will be in Perth a lot more, Bali and Jakarta as needed, and Kingsley with us will also start going to Germany as of this summer.

He's an incorrigible terror. I CANNOT IMAGINE where he gets that from. I haven't had any SOS SMS's from the Hobbits, so I assume the house is still standing (could be a stretch of an assumption, but hey, we're optimists).

Turns out that I won the "Inspirational Story" contest on Tri Talk.  Thanks to everybody who voted for me!!  Now I just need to figure out which picture of myself to have painted.  I'm definitely NOT going to use the obligatory dorky wetsuit-goggles pic.

Yanti - so much terrible news.  Glad you've found a safer place and I hope the transition goes well, although it always hurts to leave home...

Melanie - very sorry to hear that this round of chemo isn't working, but am hopeful that the new treatment will help.  The immuno-oncology treatments coming out now are very promising.  You're in my thoughts.

Salty, those days get in your head, for sure.  Step back, though, and you were smart AND hit the workout (except the reps, which your body was coaching you on) - as others have also said.  I suspect you'll get the payout for being "wicked smaht" (as they would say back East) during your race this weekend.

TJ and Ben - TAKE COVER and stay safe!  The storms missed us here, thankfully, but not by much.  Would NOT want to get caught out in that!

Mary - congrats! (but, yes, avoid the goggle pics!)

GO RACERS!

(DL-ers, c'mon, now)

I'm also racing this weekend.  Cap10k.  Biggest 10k in Texas and one of the largest in the country.  Might be a total shyte show, but I'm in a forward corral, so that'll help.  I'm going to run to the race start (a bit over 3 miles), race, then run back.  Won't likely result in the fastest of times, but this is really just the intensity portion of my planned long run, anyway (no taper, just moved some things around this week).  And I love races...

Matt

I'm so glad you won, Mary.  There were a few people in the running who came out of the blue (not existing BT members) to try to cash in on the prize.  You won because you have a great story and you are an active, supportive member of BT.  I've said it before, I'll say it again: I love when good things happen to good people.   Thank you for being part of BT and more importantly the manatees!

Bah, had a rough workout last night. We divide into groups and I generally run with 4 or 4a (4a being slightly slower) I decided to go with 4a last night because I have a race Saturday. We were doing a 22 minute tempo run @ 6:45 followed by 10' running then 8 x 20" hill repeats.

I joined the group and we took off. We hit the first mile in 6:42 and then they kind of pulled away. I was going to try and keep up but I just felt heavy AND I figured it was close to a race and not really a good time to push a workout. I tend to like to stay on pace anyway. So, I dealt with being dropped which sucks because then you have to hold pace solo, not to mention simply getting dropped sucks. So I pushed and hit another 6:42 then a 6:45 and then did the rest (half mile or so?) right at about that pace. Keeping them in sight but the gap widened. Normally I wouldn't feel so bad because I would go nail those 8 hill repeats but I was already so dead and I didn't want any residual fatigue for Saturdays race.

So, getting dropped AND not doing the full workout. Sigh. I think I am probably being too hard on myself but I'm a little bummed heading into Saturday's race.

yes, you are being too hard on yourself.  you didn't get dropped, you did the workout as prescribed. And, hill repeats are over rated

What she said.

That's what I'm seeing too. You made the pace you were supposed to. Can't race everything all the time. The "dead" feeling after may or may not be accurate, but perception can have a lot to do with that too. Feeling like you're falling behind can do that.

Thank you guys. Yeah, I don't know why this one bothered me so much! I HATE racing workouts. I am all about executing them as planned unless I don't have any races on the horizon and it's a good time to test a vdot increase.

Perhaps it's that I got dropped AND didn't do the entire workout.

But you guys are right. And in the scheme of things it's not going to make my performance suffer tomorrow, while trying to keep up and completing the workout would have.
