So here's the latest on the coaching conundrum...

I talked to Justin, the ultra guy. He was quite honest that he doesn't know the first thing about writing a bike plan and told me to go with the Ironman guy and that a 50 mile plan is similar to a marathon plan with longer long runs.

Well yeah but...

So I text Scott, the Ironman guy, and he apologized for not having gotten the info to me (it's been two weeks) and said he'd have it within 48 hours.  I responded that I am still contemplating writing my own plan and that I would understand if he didn't want to spend the time putting together a proposal since I might decide not to hire him at this time. He said it's no problem and that he hopes to get to it tonight.

So there we are.

Well, at least Justin was honest with you.  If you decide to go down that path at later time, he seems receptive so that is good.  Michi is a no go?

I figure Michi is going to be similar to Scott, as in no ultra experience, but her price point is an unknown. She did just invite me to her coaching page on FB.

Well, that's something.  At least she reached out to you.

Great job getting back in the pool! Did you swim growing up, or learn as an adult?

I learned as an adult, but I eventually got my swim to where it was pretty solid when I was triathlon focused.  It's possible that my lifting helped some there, but I'm sure a lot of it is technique that I retained.

Those are pretty impressive paces for a first time back in the pool.  It certainly doesn't happen without a lot of good form firmly engrained.  I wish I could say the same.  My first OWS in months last night was a slugfest.  Granted the water was pretty choppy but my pace was way off.

I am amused. I went back to the pool for the first time in a long time. 1300 yds and was exactly double your time.

Nice swim you had.

Little manatee meetup last night. I'm in Houston for the week so I joined up with Sean and his buddies for a hammer fest. There were about 5 of us on Tri bikes and the rest of his club on road bikes. I had an amazing time. Sean is def strong on the bike right now!

BT meetups are great.  I am always thrilled to meet someone in person that I feel I've gotten to know via the site.  There are so many wonderful people that hang out here.  I always thought it would be so cool to have a massive BT event.

Okay, Manatees - I have a rest day today. How do I overcome this challenge?

On another note, the "pristine" waters of Boulder Rez have been over taken by e-coli so the pool is closed as of right now. Will the "pristine" waters return in time for Saturday?

Last minute swim advice:
this Sunday will be my first Sprint with 750 m that I will do in freestyle (or at least most of it, the first part will be..) If you remember from last year, I was not moving freestyle even for one meter, so I completed all 3 Sprint in breaststroke. Which was an advantage in open water, because I felt like I had some sort of control: I saw everything in front of me, I had a sense of folks to my left and right, I had a sense when someone was coming on the back, so I could stop kicking. Basically, I knew what was going on around me.
I am kind of freaking out, because all my freestyle experience is in the pool where I do not have a crowd of people trying to smash me. I have a plan to start slower and let the aggressive ones go first, but I was told the race I'm doing this Sunday has a pretty overcrowded swim part. I have this vision of peoples's legs and hands, and full bodies everywhere so that I cannot even move... But I believe my imagination is just going overboard...

Mary its unfortunate that you didn't have a chance to practice OWS in a group setting but you'll be fine. Just hang back and let the crazies go. There will be contact, just stay calm and BREATHE. You'll do great!

I'm not opposed to writing my own plan. I'm just nervous about getting the balance right.

The ultra is my focus but I don't want to be dropped by Mary S on our ride either

I am sure you will be just fine.  It is pretty hard to avoid some contact if the swim is crowded.  Mentally prepare for it and don't freak out when it happens.  Just try to maintain your form and direction.  Like most things it just takes a little getting used to.  I have participated in drills in the pool to prepare for contact and navigating crowded turns with other tri folks.  When my daughter was preparing for her first tri I swam behind her in the pool batting at her legs and swam along side knocking into her so she had a sense of what the contact was like.  She was really annoyed by it initially but I think it helped her.  Sighting in the pool is another thing you can practice in the pool.

As far as the race, I've tried many different starting strategies to deal with crowds.  I generally don't like to hang back because then you are dealing with moving up past the "weavers".  People who do not swim straight and go back and forth in front of you.  They are who frustrate me the most as they will swim right into you.  As a general rule, faster people swim straighter.  I would rather have a faster swimmer tap my toes and then move around me than have someone hit me at a 45 degree angle.  Starting to the outside is a good strategy.  You may swim a little longer but the more open water can be worth it.  It also sets you up to take the turns just outside the pack that will bottleneck at the turns.

Good luck and don't let the contact bother you.  Be tough.

Mind is wanting to say something as well, but can't remember enough of the background in either to really be sure. Like timing of the events, or notable things about the courses (from a training perspective).

You don't need to have a full understanding of where everyone is around you.  You only really need to know what's in front of you and when you need to turn.  Everything else is just noise.  If someone is behind you and swimming faster then they'll go around you.  They don't want contact any more than you do, because it slows them down.  It may get crowded, but after about 200m max it should all spread out a bit.  If you're still stuck in a pack, then enjoy the free speed, as the guys in front of you are working way harder than you are.  Remain calm and focus on moving forward.

I had swim #2 today and made my main point of it to test my race distance (300 yds) to see how far I am from what I'd like.  I clocked in at 4:16 (1:25/100), which already puts me pretty close.  The race is on the 25th, so I'm aiming on getting that time under 4:00.  If I reach that next week, then we'll see.  At some point I'll have to save something for the bike and the run though.

Speaking of the run, these short runs I've been doing have paid off tremendously.  Where 8 minute miles were really hard last week I cruised at 7:27 pace for 2.8 miles today.  Sunday I'll do my first longer run (6-8 miles depending on how I feel).  I know those distances are really short to most of you guys doing long course stuff, but I'm pretty happy with how quickly my form is returning.

Thanks for all the advice and sharing different experience and perspective.
TJ, I swam in OWS in Lake Michigan last year and the good thing about was that there was plenty of space, so the crowd spread out kind of. See the map below for this race. I am not sure if this is considered OWS or not, but we are going in waves, unlike in the pool.

You made a good point, Steve, on not staying totally in the back. Now I remember that last year I decided to stay in the back and was "attacked" by the next wave from the back, and I had to "play a game" of moving around folks swimming in multiple directions in front of me.

Matt, you are so right about speedy folks, who know what they're doing, and will probably pass with no problem. I like your point on the free speed

I think I am fine with the "regular" contact here and there, I am not afraid if somebody touches me or kicks. For some strange reason I have the vision of massive pack of people crawling on top of each other.... I checked the comment of the person who told me about the crowd, and he actually was a volunteer at the swim portion, so I can guess his experience was subjective, as he was not actually in the pool. So I should just BREATHE.....

That's very impressive! Both, swimming and running progress. If that's what happens to you at the day #2, imagine where you'll be in a month
Do you think the strength training you've been doing is what's helping?

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
