Happy New Year everyone! Lots of great stuff going on here, and now that I'm back in The Dalles, where I have no friends or family, maybe I can keep up.

December was my "off season" and I definitely rocked the "off"   Especially, considering 30 miles of the run was from my ultra on the 5th. I'm ready to get back in gear for January!

December's totals:
Bike:30m  - 10 Mi
Run:10h 26m 37s  - 45.24 Mi
Swim:40m  - 2250 Yd

I'm happy with my 2009 totals and far surpassed my 2008 totals on the bike and run.

2009 totals
Bike:128h 18m 43s  - 1878.28 Mi
Run:207h 10m 58s  - 1090.73 Mi
Swim:56h 53m 17s  - 157274 Yd

Goals for 2010:

Finish IMCDA strong and with a smile
Finish Le Grizz 50 mile Ultramarathon
Pick up a couple more marathon states along the way
Reach and maintain my goal weight

Happy New Year Everyone.....while most of you were getting busy with the SBR I had a mandatory off day.  Given my new zest for following the plan, I sat in a car for many hours heading back to Madison.  We had a great time on vacation, but all good things must come to an end, right?

Congrats to those of you who had great workouts...I've seen many over the last few days which is very exciting!

I have a Masters of Library and Information Science and was ingrained with an academic disdain for wikipedia. It's so easy to find reputable sources, why go with something that is only as good as its most ignorant contributor? But I also found academia can be horribly pretentious and self-aggrandizing, so it all comes out in the wash.

Going to set up my rollers tonight, I promise myself!! Look for video tomorrow (unless I'm in the hospital getting stitches)...

awesome. that's why. and add anonymous to that as well. but i don't believe that because academia is pretentious and self aggrandizing it balances out... you find a$$holes everywhere.  that's just life.

Good stuff.  I don't care for wiki either, but had to ask since you obviously have some disdain for it.  My wife edited a post yesterday about Jeremiah Johnson - and she knows sh*t about JJ.

Truth!

I'm sad to note that I have no video of my first time on rollers, which was a miserable disaster. I think I have bike issues that I am too dumb to even identify. Next stop: LBS.

Reno8 - 2010-01-01 7:24 AM Raced the Atlanta Track Clubs Resolution 5k.  Nice rolling course with a TON of people and the weather could not have been better.  Low 40's, sun out bright and not too much wind.

26:40...Wooo Hoooo.  I am very pleased with that time and didn't seem to have any effects of the vertigo from earlier in the week.  This was a race I wanted to push a little bit and see where my legs are and I am very pleased.  Still have a long way to go till March 21 and didn't want to crash today since I have a 10 miler on Sunday but the effort today made me smile.....and that is a good thing.

Off to cook some hoppin-john and some cornbread...it's a southern "thang"...yummmm.

Steve

Awesome job Steve!!  and what the heck are hoppin-johns??  Never mind ~ (Thanks Trevor!) I see that one was covered with his unreliable, non reputable, non cited Wikipedia source!

Ok, I am really done with this crappy cold weather, high of 20 here today and 35mph winds...

Where is a good place to live that is warm all year but has no natural disasters?

California has earthquakes, Florida has hurricanes, so those places are out.

Good luck with that! New Mexico, parts of Texas, Nevada, just hot, may get a tornado in parts though.  Inland Mississippi, Alabama!

Nevada and New Mexico might be be good.  It was cool to meet Barry in Alabama but I could do without hearing the word y'all for quite some time after that trip.  I am pretty sure one waitress used it 3 times in one sentence.

Also not sure I could live in SEC territory for too long.

You're done with the weather?  It was -25F WC when I got up.....all I have on tap today is a shrivel swim so barely have to be outside at all today.

If I got to pick the perfect weather place it would be the Big Island of Hawaii....good bike, swimming, running and hiking in Volcano National Park. Can't beat it.

LAS VEGAS!!! :-)  It does get a little windy at times due to the fact that Vegas is in a "valley".

I don't think you can beat the cycling community here. It totally rocks. There's group rides of various levels (and yes even Crit racers, and 4:20am group rides) happening E-V-E-R-Y day, and group Challenge rides on Saturdays, as well as many hills and flats.  There are some really steep hills that will sure to challenge you. Oh yeah, we also have access to OWS easily. Did I tell you that we also have bike paths/trails EVERYWHERE that gives a lot of variety? You can run on those too.

If you like doing IM/HIM races, then do the courses for Silverman triathlon will get you better than the "non-locals". :-D

Unfortunately, it does get a tad bit cold, so you can either bundle up, wait until the afternoon to warm up.  It's only for two months, then it's all warmed up again!

The only natural disaster we had was last year when it snowed more than 3 inches. I was LAUGHIN' at my friends when they were freaking out about the snowstorm. It probably rained like 5 or 6 times the entire year.

Returning MG members know that woodworking is my other hobby. Due to space requirements my shop is also where I store my tri-bike and wheels. I went out there this AM to work on a mantle for my inlaws. It was cold out there! Turns out I left the garage door open all night! I got lucky that the bike and my tools were still there D'oh!

Anyway the heater is on so hopefully I can go back out in an hour and make some progress.

I guess we have no right to complain about cold temps compared to Canada.  I love the cold weather to run in but I can't seem to get motivated enough to take the bike out.  Happy New Year MG!!

Something tells me this isn't the place to complain about the freezing, cold, outside pool that I have to use during these cold times?!? And I'm sure it will do no good to explain that now that I'm climatized to the weather here, anything below 75 is cold?!  Yeah...never mind...I'm not sure I can deal with the harassment that comes along with admitting this to people who actually deal with "real" cold!

Todays Workout:

Well it was too cold for me outside today (20deg)  so I decided to do a treadmill run, which worked well because I also had to help my wife do a MHR test for her marathon training plan.  She did great!

So Saturdays are going to be my LSR days, so I figured I would start with my 60 min run and build from here, next week I will add 10%.

Today started off with 40 mins @ 9:14/mi then since I was getting bored I decided to up the pace for 10 mins.

I started by jumping for 5 mins to a 7:58 pace, then hit the up button a few times during the last 5 mins to get to a 6:15 pace for the last 60 secs.

Finally I did my last 10 mins back at the 9:14 pace.

When all was said and done, I finished at 6.7 miles in one hour and the pace averaged out to 8:58/mi.

Overall my avg HR was in the low end of my Z3, so still well within my Aerobic range, so I am happy.

I am looking at a 5k in 2 weeks as a test of where I am going into my training year.  My goal is sub 23, which will be a PR.

What is on the plate for my MG friends today?

Really?  California's earthquakes happen like once every gazillion years compared to all of those tornadoes/hurricanes in the midwest/south east...

I think San Diego would be the best, it's never too super hot in the summer and you can pretty much get out all year 'round.

San Francisco is not too shabby!  I did my 12 mile run this morning in 52F, short sleeves and shorts.  Sorry, Trevor.
