Yes, i have a lot of bikes Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by Rudedog55 Originally posted by Asalzwed you would be better served to borrow someones mountain bike, just make sure to remove the bar ends if it has them. You would never get enough clearance or traction with a road bike and the gearing would prolly not help either. you are pac nw??? There is an awesome cross scene up there!!! the three hotbeds are the Pac NW, New England and Boulder, CO area, not to much in the south yet, but its catching on. Originally posted by Rudedog55 Originally posted by sallya hi fellow bike racer!!!! i think if u like running and riding you should check out Cyclocross!!! its the best of both worlds and has beer!!!!!!! Hey guys! I got a nice note from Rusty on my Strava page. He says you guys are still alive and kicking over here. I used to post here a long time ago. Just read through a few pages and see that I still know a few people on here. I haven't been around BT since last year. I did a Tri last spring and then decided to focus on cycling. I got a road bike, joined a team and start racing in January. Our cycling season starts early here in AZ. I've raced a couple of road races, a stage race but most of the racing around here is crits. I went from a Cat 4 to a Cat 2 in a couple of months and really enjoy bike racing! We just had the state crit last weekend and I was able to win the Masters race. Most of my races from now on will be in the Pro 1/2 field so it's going to be a lot harder. I'm sure I will get back into Triathlon one day. Right now I'm finding it easier to just do one sport. I don't miss swimming but I do miss running! I sold my Tri bike to buy a mountain bike, so that will be my next adventure! Good luck with your races! I'm going to be better at checking back in. I love reading race reports! Cheers! Sally Say what? I actually really want to try cyclocross as well. Can a beginner use a regular road bike or do you really need the extra clearance no matter what? Ah, I didn't think abou the gearing. Duh. That shows what kind of a cyclist I am I know there is a really big community here for sure. I just don't know much about it. I might dabble a bit. Thinking about taking the track class at the velodrome, too. Somewhere you brought up "LBS money" and this is actually where my thought process went to. At least checking it out with the style of the event and the versatility of what's used for it. Yes, that's it. The part I'm not sure of is how fast they are on the roads. If it was necessary to get to more typical road wheel setups for them. If I remember, part of the trouble Adrienne had is that her current bike may be a little cumbersome in that regard. I just hadn't looked close enough at it to know this yet. Wouldn't want to push for something only for it to not really make a difference. Definitely where I'd look for a more multi-purpose type bike though. |

I had a VO2max session on the trainer this morning and a T-pace run this afternoon if I can find some decent roads to run on. My exciting news of the day is that I saw the first sure sign of spring this morning - two roadkill skunks on the side of the road. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Several of the boys and girls in the winter group road rides I do ride their CX bikes all winter in the group. A couple switch to more road-like tires, others don't. These rides are a fair amount of winter-pace effort, but there are also some short punchy bits as well as longish (controlled) harder efforts. The CX folks just sit right in with no issues. A bit anecdotal of course, but last summer I did a hard century (12k feet of climbing with 6500' in the last 28 miles). I somehow got to fiddle-farting around and missed the big fastie roll-out, so spent the first 60 miles or so bridging from group to group. around mile 60 I got caught by a dude on a cx bike, and for the next 10 miles it was all I could do to sit on his wheel. when it began to get really grippy after mile 70 he really laid it down and I never saw him again. So, yeah - evidently when paired with the right motor, any bike will do! |

I had a VO2max set on the road two days ago - it was 82 degrees and the air was thick with pollen - I had to stop once and rinse my eyes out - they felt like they were full of sand. That is NOT a complaint (give me another week or two) as it is quite lovely with everything is in bloom here. On a bit of a mini taper as the first multisport race of the season is Sunday: a 5k/28k/5k duathlon. I haven't done a du in over 20 years - a little nervous and excited about it! Swim a little later today (with a fair amount of butterfly, if I recall), 1 minute on/1 minute off trainer intervals tomorrow, then a little pre-race brick on Saturday. JT is captaining a Ragnar trail team Friday and Saturday, so will go out to volunteer and cheer on a bit of that as well. |

Wow, nice work, James - that is an amazing turn-around, especially in light of the fact that at the end of last year you could even take a step! Just joined the IM Strava Club - thanks for the pointer. That is pretty cool, although typically I only log harder efforts (and never any swimming), but now I am going to have to start logging ALL my training in strava if I ever hope to move out of the middle of the pack. I guess that is the way strava intends it, right? yeah, when Sally dropped by (Hi Sally!) I thought "You know, we really ought to change the name of the group to SB OR R Utopia." also, with so many monster single-discipline folks in the group I was thinking that if you Put Arend on the swim, Sally on the bike, and Adrienne on the run, we would have an absolutely murderous, unbeatable women's relay team. [Insert witty reference to Arend wearing his wife's Lulu Lemons here.] |

I had to deal with a girl running and juggling, headwind on the backstretch and a couple kids on push bikes. I had 2 slow splits, 3 right on and 3 fast ... but I can blame the inconsistency on all of the above 6.5 miles easy this am. Slooooowwwly tapering!

Had a 2x20' @ 96% ride this morning -- I had attempted the same ride on Tuesday morning and my legs just laughed at me (so I revised the workout to a slightly more manageable 8x5' @ 90-something %). It was much better today. Also have a 40ish minute easy run to do tonight, but it may have to be on a treadmill due to potential thunderstorms. If it's just raining, I'm doing it outside. If there's lightning involved, I think I'll opt for a treadmill. Spring is definitely in the air around here....we are right on the cusp of summer though. In Houston, it's a like a switch that gets flipped, and when that happens, it'll be summer till October. I will NEVER complain about it though (will whine all day long about anything under 55F though!). |

Yesterday was my first longer, harder ride of the year (outside, complete with sun!) and an easy run. So, today was a force set in the pool for about an hour and about to go for another sooooper easy run (looking for about an hour) to recover from yesterday's ride. Tomorrow will be another longer, harder ride - my first race is getting here faster than my bike mileage is! Gotta change that... As for the Iron strava group - I see James is up near the top of the leaderboard this week! Hmmm, maybe I'll join and make today's run longer (would have to be a LOT longer). Matt |

Today I was planning to do a race paced climb for the TT I have coming up on Sunday but my legs are still recovering a bit from last week and Tuesday's group ride. They have that sore but strong feeling. Will probably ride closer to Tempo/SS with short 3-5 minute efforts at race pace mixed in. |

Expert 1260 Norton Shores, MI | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Finally able to get outside on the bike for a couple 2 hour rides. Roads are really tore up from the winter and I had to come to a dead stop a couple times to let cars pass because the shoulder was blown apart. On my run the other day, the moisture in the road was coming up through the pavement and causing it to pump under my feet. Like running on jello. Job security for me as a Civil Engineer . Good swim today - Main Set was 3x800 @12:00SI. Finally nailed this one coming in at 11:57; 11:47; 11:44. A little shocked when I came in that fast on the 2nd...guess I will take a rest .

I am up to 2 miles a run, i am doing that 4 days this week, and a 1mile in am and 1 mile in pm tonight. Since i have been bike training, i am up at 4am and at gym at 5, i then either run right after on the dreadmill or the last couple days i have been driving the 10 mins home and then running. I run so much better after a bike session, guess if i do anymore running races, i need to look at my warmup. in March, including a easy rest week last week, i biked just about 500 miles, and i ran close to 40 miles. i have yet to swim. i only log on strava maybe once or twice a week, usually Sunday after the races to see how my power looked for the day. I do not log trainer miles when running, but i promise i'm running, now that it is warming up, i will be outside predominantly. Our lead sprinter is in the Yellow Jersey for the series we are in, we are the only team to keep it more than a week. One team commented to us that they have never seen a Cat4 squad control and dominate a race like we did, it was a nice feeling. 2 and a half months till my Half iron. Sometimes during the summer, when i train with this one particular group, i train on my Cross bike for the added weight, rolling resistance and single small chainring, otherwise they complain i go to fast. I do like riding with them, so this is a good compromise. its not that i hammer too hard, they are a casual group and like to average around 15mph like a coffee ride, and i like a bunch of the fella's and ladies, so it works. |

I think Austin is hot, but much less humid that Houston. Houston actually doesn't get that hot....low of about 78, but a high in the 88-92 range, I think -- but it's the humidity that's the killer. I didn't even really know what humidity was (grew up and lived on the very mild West Coast for my whole life). For me, the mornings, when it's 80F and 100% humidity, are much worse than the afternoons when some of the humidity/sticky-ness burns off. You just have to be willing to dial things back a bit when the heat hits....I know that's a struggle for you, Matt |

I've been there too (ran better off a bike warm-up than run warm-up), and it's kind of a shorter term solution or viewpoint. Keep advancing your knowledge of running theory, your run ability and how things apply to you and this will turn around. You'll get a better run after a warm-up of running. I can run pretty well right away off of a bike that's not too hard right now, but off of a hard bike, no. I'm going to be suffering. I can run well at times off some decent bike work, but the best ones come off of a run-warm-up. |

Being part of the group has always been fantastic for me, so hindishgt being what it is, I made a pretty big error by letting my participation drop off. Currently looking at wind and rain outside my office window and the need to be running. May end up on the treadmill instead. |
