Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by rrrunner Originally posted by jmkizer My coach falls a bit between what TJ experienced and what Chris describes. I do not have coached sessions or group workouts with Maija, however I do have a customized 100% not cookie-cutter training plan. Working with Maija has helped me stretch myself, organize my training, improved my cycling and running performance, got me into the pool and yoga studio, got me in touch with the right professionals from shoe fitting to bike fitting to medical assistance. In short, Maija is my "other mom." The customized training plans are helpful with "stacking" events, helping me to select races and getting me to peak at the right times.
Interestingly, through Coach Scott I have had the opportunity to meet another local coach, Michi (sounds like michie). She is local but offers a no-in-person coaching for $100/month. That was where I got the bottom end of my price spectrum. I'm just not sure having someone else plan my sessions is worth $100/month. She also teaches spin at another location of the gym I attend. She was the one with whom I was discussing IM Boulder a few weeks ago. Also mildly concerned about the awkward factor of going from Scott to Michi when they no each other so well. For those of you familiar with Endurance Obsession, Michi and her husband started that group. ETA: Ya'll are tapping in to the whirlwind that has been in side my head for the last couple weeks. Good!!!! I've had this discussion in the past with Janyne, and here is the "thing" (for me anyway). I think the relationship you have with the coach is WAY MORE important than we might originally consider. Yes, knowledge is pretty high up there as well. But look at what Janyne gets. She is getting a customized plan that fits her needs, lifestyle, etc. Even now, her coach is available for input after the crash. What kind of value does that have???? And it seems like Maija is available for a variety of other ancillary questions as well. Janyne, I don't recall, but did you have a kickoff/interview with your coach at the beginning to assess your needs and expectations? When I finally take that step, this is what I'd be looking for. And while I would hate for you to step on Coach Scott's toes, the other seems better. Have you talked to Coach S about something more customized to your needs? Or a different price point option that gives you what you need? I get that the cookie cutter plan is what he gave to the group, with little individualized input. But at the price point I think that was pretty fair. Edited by cdban66 2014-09-11 1:53 PM |

Since you are at the end of the coach group, would you care to share what you've learned? Would you do it again? Would you get a more dedicated coach in the future? What types of benefits did the coached group provide? I was surprised that the 10 weeks is over, it went by really quickly. Those, my friend, are questions that have been rattling around in my head for a couple weeks now. A loaded question as it were. I'm glad I tried it out. I've enjoyed the group atmosphere and working with a "team". I've enjoyed the sessions at the cycling studio, which is something I likely would not have tried on my own. I've started using the Garmin and enjoyed the feedback that I get from that, and being able to identify my "zones" and the effectiveness of my workouts. I didn't like the one size fits all feel of the assigned sessions, both group and solo. I felt like the coach gave everyone the same sessions, regardless of background and ability, and the sessions didn't vary or increase over the course of the 10 weeks. I mentioned to coach at least a couple times that RnR was my focus but my training didn't reflect that (although he did get me to back off my running which probably helped the ITBS finally heal). I don't know to what extent these "issues" are just the nature of being in a coached group. It's cheaper, ya get what ya pay for. There was never much feedback "hey try this" or "fix that" other than some mention of my lousy kick in swimming (already knew that) and he did get me to extend my pull to my thigh. This is not a personality conflict issue, I really like Coach. I don't know that I felt like he was the "authority" though. OTOH, I don't know that I'm willing to pay $100 - $200 per month for a dedicated coach considering the fact that I think I will always be a MOP-er. I don't know that I've "learned" anything over the last few weeks that I hadn't read/heard elsewhere, so I'll probably go back to self-coached. At least for now. OK, fair enough. I had been mulling getting a coach for a while and I KNOW it would be money wasted due to my waning interest, and my goals. I *think* you would benefit from a 1 on 1, hands on approach, but again, it is an investment that may not be worthwhile for you. So now the question (again) to the group is "For those that are coached, what are the greatest and ancillary benefits that you have seen?" I am asking about both tangibles and intangibles as well as big and small. My coach falls a bit between what TJ experienced and what Chris describes. I do not have coached sessions or group workouts with Maija, however I do have a customized 100% not cookie-cutter training plan. Hmmm...I see a trend. A thought I would have is going self-coach again for a couple of months now that you've been in a group and had some bit of guidance. See if you miss it, or if you feel your performance and motivation "suffer" without the group. You sound like you enjoyed it but aren't sold on needing it to move forward with the goals you have. Do you feel like you can incorporate what you learned into new training sessions on your own? Bottom line, $100 is 20 days of chai lattes

It was a good introduction to having a coach and gave me an idea of what I want/need if I'm going to continue. I've not had this discussion with him. Interestingly, I was hoping that moving would be a way to avoid it. Drastic no? He wants to have a BBQ at his house for the group and have each of us do a short video for his web site stating what we benefitted from his coaching. I figure I'll say something positive like I enjoyed the group, or he got me to try new techniques or something vague like that. Meanwhile, though, I will have to have the conversation with his because he plans to have another group beginning in the next few weeks. Edited by rrrunner 2014-09-11 2:11 PM |

It's not that he hasn't provided good coaching, it's just that I really don't think I need to pay him the money I do for what I get. But, I know he needs all the swimmers he can get and he is a nice guy, so I stay!! Edited by amd723 2014-09-11 2:14 PM |

That's exactly it! I can also continue to go to the cycling studio on my own. I talked with the owner the other day. He has discounts that increase based on the number of sessions you buy in a packet. I feel like the zone knowledge I gained there was the biggest benefit of this whole thing. So the more I work with them I could see my bike really improving and at ~$20 per session it's a lot cheaper than buying a computrainer (although not convenient because it's across town) |

Is there any way you could just opt out of the whole thing and have the frank discussion you need to have with him? This might be a dumb question, but what about the online coaching option here on BT? It's at the bottom of the Forums section and I don't know anything about it. |

But at the price point I think that was pretty fair. Ha, my initial discussion with Maija was something like, I want to do the MS150 and maybe work up to a century. I had done the MS ride once at that point and dorked up my back (I think this was my 8th BikeMS?). I started with her right after PT. |

[/QUOTE} I absolutely agree that it was fair, but I think to keep paying someone I need more. I dunno. I understand what you are saying about needing more coaching, customization and feedback. I mean, you can do group rides for free through most LBSs. And if you want a cookie cutter plan, there are plenty out there. I do think that you got more for your money than you are giving him credit for. The cardiovascular assessment alone costs over $250 here (http://www.humanperformancelaboratory.com/Services_Overview.html), plus pool time ($7/session here, uncoached), plus entry to two races. As far as Coach Michi,I'm sure you wouldn't be the first so if you decide to go that way, I wouldn't sweat it. Not all coaching relationships work out! |

That's exactly it! I can also continue to go to the cycling studio on my own. I talked with the owner the other day. He has discounts that increase based on the number of sessions you buy in a packet. I feel like the zone knowledge I gained there was the biggest benefit of this whole thing. So the more I work with them I could see my bike really improving and at ~$20 per session it's a lot cheaper than buying a computrainer (although not convenient because it's across town) It sounds like we have a winner ;-) |
